Dolly Parton at the Wildhorse

Dolly PartonYou'd think someone as legendary as Dolly Parton would make her rare stop in Nashville at some huge concert venue -- like the Grand Ole Opry house or even the Sommet Center. But, no. She's coming to Nashville's Wildhorse Saloon. It's a charity show to benefit the W.O. Smith Nashville Community Music School, so maybe she didn't need a big venue for her mini four-song set. She won't be alone, either. A handful of Sony BMG artists -- Ronnie Dunn, Kellie Pickler and Keith Anderson -- will join her at the Feb. 2 show. Tickets are only $45, but it's a general admission event. So if you want to watch it with your elbows on the stage, get there early.

Darryl Worley Expects Fights at Upcoming Gig

Posted: November 17th, 2008 at 5:26 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Darryl Worley Artist PageWho knew there was a country music/mixed martial arts connection? Apparently, Darryl Worley did. Because he's hosting the Music City Mixed Martial Arts event at Nashville's Wildhorse Saloon on Nov 25. "I've been a fan of Mixed Martial Arts for quite some time," said Worley. "I jumped at the chance to get involved with Music City MMA and bring this intense sport to Nashville." But this is not just another country concert with a cause. There will be fighting and kicks and takedowns and punches and headbutts. And then there will be a main event, a fight between heavyweight Steve Westbeld and Memphis native Carlton "Automatic" Little. I'm not one for senseless violence, but I have to say that Worley's involvement has definitely piqued my interest.

Hootie & the Blowfish in Country? Sign Me Up.

Posted: July 18th, 2008 at 9:59 am  |  By: Craig Shelburne

Hootie & the BlowfishLike a lot of folks, I am skeptical of pop stars trying to break through as country artists. But I suddenly find myself in favor of Darius Rucker, lead singer of Hootie & the Blowfish, who has a successful solo single on the country charts right now. The band played at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville earlier this week, and out of curiosity and nostalgia, I decided to go. You know, their most popular tunes didn't sound that far removed from today's country music - plus, Darius is just fun to watch when he gets to dancing. (I confess, I was dancing a little bit too, but I'm fun to watch for a different reason.)

Choreographing the World's Longest Line Dance

Posted: June 6th, 2008 at 11:46 am  |  By: Jenny Cain

With over 200 dancers and only two days of rehearsals, Alan Jackson's new video for "Good Time" was well on its way! It was Alan's joke in the beginning that the song was so country, they were gonna bring line dancing back ... but what a great idea it was!

Around the Web: Jason Aldean Picks Up Club Gig

Posted: May 23rd, 2008 at 4:36 pm  |  By: Link Ray

You can take Country Thunder out of Texas, but you can't take Texas out of Jason Aldean. He's doing a show at Cowboys Dance Hall in Arlington, Texas, on May 31 to make up for the festival's cancellation.

The Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville is playing host to Richard Marx, former pop sensation and the man behind several of Keith Urban's biggest hits.

Looks like the Urbans could be celebrating Dependent's Day right around the Fourth of July. Their baby is reportedly due in six weeks. And, apparently, Nicole's baby brain has really set in. She admits she forgot to vote for her hubby for the ACM's entertainer of the year.

Rosanne Cash's advice for writing good songs: Use more poetic license and fewer facts.

Little Big Town's Kimberly Roads Schlapman picked a cute Daisy at the ACMs. She brought her 10-month-old to the backstage giveaway retreat in Las Vegas.

Gone Country – Here It Comes

Posted: October 26th, 2007 at 12:29 pm  |  By: Craig Shelburne

Dee Snider in Gone CountryCuriosity got the best of me last night, so I dropped into the Wildhorse Saloon for a taping of Gone Country, a new series coming to CMT in early 2008. John Rich is the host, and besides talking a whole lot, he ends up choosing one of seven singing celebrities to introduce to country radio. At this taping, the cast members sang for a country audience for the first time, trying out something co-written with some of the city’s finest writers.

Personally, my favorite song of the night was the first one – “Smile That Smile,” about the moment when your resistance falls away. Carnie Wilson of Wilson Phillips sang it with her co-writers, Marv Green and Leslie Satcher. (I guess Wendy and Chynna couldn’t make it.) She sparkled in a beautiful white rhinestone jacket, clearly loving her moment in the spotlight again. Julio Iglesias Jr. has … well… he has a great smile. Sisqo earned the most applause of the night, and his original song was a standout too. Am I the only one who never heard “The Thong Song”? Must be. So I had nothing to judge him against. If you like Martina McBride, you’d like Diana DeGarmo, a strong singer and American Idol runner-up. For a quieter performance, give a shot to Maureen McCormick (Marsha Brady on The Brady Bunch), who is taking another stab at a music career and did herself proud.

Bobby Brown – of New Edition and The National Enquirer -- offered a song about changing his ways. He told the audience he just got out of a long marriage, even though he wishes it wasn’t over. What would Whitney Houston say to that? Bobby was quick to add that he’s got a new woman and says he’ll be on his best behavior from now on. Considering the rumors about his behavior in the Nashville house where he and the castmates lived for two weeks, I seriously doubt that. Meanwhile, the original song by Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider was more rock than country, but what isn’t these days? Although I’m partial to country music, at the end of the night, I couldn’t resist singing along to “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” Of course, in the long run, we are gonna take it, because one of these artists is going to have a shot at country stardom, but we’ll have to wait until early next year to find out which one.
