Another record store by my house just closed. And already I’m nostalgic for the days when I could take my time browsing CDs new and old. I could spend an hour in that place, asking random strangers what they thought of so-and-so’s latest single or which sub-genre of country they were most into.

And a fiddle riff. And some steel guitar. Then maybe I’ll eat my veggies. I grew up with the jingle for Libby’s canned vegetables, and my mom usually always had Libby’s on our table, table, table. So Sara Evans‘ take on the musical tag line feels very country and very nostalgic. Two things I love. The concept behind the new ad campaign is to get people to eat dinner together more often. With Evans’ new Brady Bunch blended family, I’ll bet making dinner at her house is pretty chaotic. And it’s not nearly as easy as ordering a pizza. But even with the chaos, eating dinner together is a real fine place to start.

Supposedly, Jessica Simpson got no love at her first major concert appearance up in Wisconsin on Saturday night. I find that hard to believe. Why would tens of thousands of fans, who had likely been drinking all day, be that hateful? She came onstage at the Country Thunder USA festival after Kellie Pickler and before Sara Evans, two very lovely bookends. She did some new stuff and a few classic country covers. However, one of the area newspapers, the Kenosha News, reported that many audience members agreed with one guy who said, “I just don’t hear the country in her; I don’t hear the twang. She’s not good enough to be here.” Many country fans agreed? How many did the reporter talk to? Ten? Because that isn’t a majority.

Usually I can persuade a few of my friends to join me for the nightly concerts at the CMA Music Festival, so I don’t have to sit there by myself all night, taking notes. This year, for the first time, I had several friends ask if they could tag along. Well, sure! Seeing the event through the eyes of a first-timer always makes it a lot more fun. When Rascal Flatts suddenly appeared as the surprise guest that first night, you could definitely sense the excitement in the crowd - stuff like this just doesn’t happen outside of Nashville.
