Del McCoury Leads a Fun Night at IBMA Awards

Posted: October 3rd, 2008 at 9:51 am  |  By: Emilee Warner

Del McCoury BandThe 2008 IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) awards show kicked off with a bang last night. The Steep Canyon Rangers opened the show with their bluegrass chart-topper “Lovin’ Pretty Women” and toward the end of the song, the Shoefly Girls came out on stage clogging! It set the tone for a fun show. Del McCoury stepped on stage, and in his own witty way, yelled, “Hey everybody!” He then went on to tell the history of the Ryman Auditorium and how it began as a Baptist tabernacle in May of 1890. Del joked he had a gig at the world famous Station Inn that night.

Bluegrass Musicians Celebrate IBMA Nominations

Posted: August 14th, 2008 at 5:00 pm  |  By: Craig Shelburne

Dailey & VincentCongratulations to Dailey & Vincent, who earned a spectacular 10 nominations from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) this morning. They even snagged one for entertainer of the year - not bad for a duo that’s on its first album. (Jamie Dailey used to sing with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver; Darrin Vincent was part of Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder.) They’re joined in the top category by some familiar faces: the Grascals, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, the Del McCoury Band and Rhonda Vincent & the Rage.

Genuine Music at the Country Music Hall of Fame

Posted: July 1st, 2008 at 2:43 pm  |  By: Chet Flippo

Dailey & VincentIt’s not often you get a stellar evening of excellent music that is also totally Pro Tools-free. No doctoring of performances was needed at the Country Music Hall of Fame’s Medallion ceremony on June 29, marking the induction of Tom T. Hall and the Statler Brothers into the Hall of Fame. Although both Hall and the Statlers have been retired for years, they unpacked their chops to sing and to show the world that they’ve still got it. Hall performed his true-life ode, “Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine.” The Statlers sang a kick-out-the-jams version of their “I’ll Go to My Grave Loving You.” Longtime Hall friend Bobby Bare paid him tribute with a moving “That’s How I Got to Memphis.” Reba McEntire brought the Statlers’ “Flowers On The Wall” back to life with verve.

Growing Up at Silver Dollar City

Posted: May 29th, 2008 at 5:01 pm  |  By: Dailey & Vincent

Dailey & VincentJamie and I are in the middle of a week-long tour that started out in Steelville, Mo., last Saturday and then took us to Branson for the Bluegrass & BBQ Festival at Silver Dollar City. On Friday, we’re in Morrilton, Ark., and we’ll end up in Nashville hosting the world-famous Ernest Tubb Midnite Jamboree on WSM on Saturday. Since I was raised in Missouri, it was a treat to come back to a warm reception of fans and friends who had seen me grow up playing with my parents, sister and brother in the Sally Mountain Show. I started singing with them at the age of 2, and as I grew I started playing the instruments I could hold. For those of you who’ve seen me, you know that I’m not very big, so it’s funny that my first instrument was the standup bass! From the time I was about 5, I would lie on the floor, slide under the neck, and play along with my dad and friends. As I grew, I’d stand on a box and play Mom’s bass.

DL&Q Festival Feels Like Going Home

Posted: May 13th, 2008 at 2:55 pm  |  By: Dailey & Vincent

Dailey & VincentWe started out in one of my favorite places this weekend — Denton, N.C. — at Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver’s bluegrass festival. This was like going home for me, seeing and visiting with old friends, along with Doyle and the boys. The promoter said it was the biggest Thursday they have ever had since the festival started many years ago. We did two 45-minute sets. It was packed when we got on stage; the crowd was incredibly receptive and we had fun together. In the middle of our second set, the clouds opened up and it started hailing hard! I MEAN REALLY HARD! Luckily the show was held under a pavilion, so we stopped the show, and Darrin and I went over and sat on the edge of the stage. We took pictures with folks until the storm passed and then finished our show. The crowd was wonderful and brought us back for two encores, plus we sold out all of our merchandise. WOW! What a night!
