Test Your Country Song Brand Recall

Jason AldeanWired magazine recently had a story about product placement in songs. It talks about how it’s kept on the down-low when a brand approaches an artist or a songwriter with an idea. About how the music business has changed so much that bands and singers are essentially just singing advertisements. And getting paid for it. As was the case when Double Happiness Jeans had the nerve to approach the Pussycat Dolls about finding a way to fit their jeans into some lyrics.

Dierks Bentley Hits the Road for Kids

Posted: June 12th, 2008 at 1:00 pm  |  By: Deb Barnes

Dierks BentleyDierks Bentley knows how to put the “fun” in “fundraiser.” This fall, for the third year in a row, the singer-songwriter plans to host the Miles and Music for Kids Celebrity Motorcycle Ride to benefit Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville.

“We do a motorcycle ride that ends with a concert,” says Bentley. “It’s a really fun ride. We’ve had anywhere from 1500 to 3000-plus bike riders in the past. It ends with a down-home concert where you hear stars in a setting that you’ll never get a chance to see them in again … just jam sessions. Last year, we played with Shooter Jennings and Marty Stuart — all three of us up there on stage. Big Kenny came out, and Jason Aldean and James Otto. The fans really dig it because they get to see people play in the most intimate settings.”

“Last Dollar” Paid Off for Big Kenny in 2007

Posted: December 26th, 2007 at 1:51 pm  |  By: Tom Roland

Tim McGraw and Big KennyAs we cruise into 2008, nearly every media outlet is offering a list — sometimes lots of lists — of the best and worst that the past year brought us.

The very first thing that 2007 brought, at least on CMT, was the New Year’s Day debut of Tim McGraw’s video, “Last Dollar (Fly Away).” The song’s genesis actually dates back five years to New Year’s Eve 2002, and since the change of the calendar is generally a time of reflection and taking stock, the history of “Last Dollar” is particularly worth revisiting.

Big Kenny Alphin, of Big & Rich, wrote it. As the story goes, he was in debt way over his ears, thanks to a solo recording career that hadn’t had the commercial success he’d anticipated. He was $140,000 in debt and had all of $200 in his pockets when he hit the blackjack tables in Las Vegas, hoping for some luck. He got it, but in a less-than-obvious manner. Big Kenny lost nearly all of his money, left the dealer a $20 tip and ended up with just one George Washington in his wallet.

Where’s the luck? Well, if nothing else, Big Kenny is an optimist. With that single dollar to his name, he laughed in the face of financial danger, saw his situation as one of freedom from possession and penned a reminder that when things are down-in-the-depths bad, they can only get better. It’s a perspective that’s been written about before by everyone from Bob Dylan (“Like a Rolling Stone”), John Lennon (“Imagine”) and the Atlanta Rhythm Section’s J.R. Cobb (author of Wynonna’s “Rock Bottom”).

For Big Kenny, that viewpoint has played out quite well. Big & Rich, with its unconventional blending of hard rock, funk, rap and mainstream country, became an unlikely success. He’s reaped some nice financial rewards in the process and shown an admirable sense of responsibility by giving back some of those earnings through his efforts in Darfur.

Ultimately, as you evaluate 2007 and peer into 2008, the lessons of “Last Dollar (Fly Away)” are excellent things to keep in mind. No matter what the last year brought, the next one could be entirely different. Whether your last 12 months were a huge success, a total disaster or something in between, tomorrow is indeed another day.

Big Kenny on the Most Incredible Day of His Life

Big Kenny in Sudan(from an e-mail sent from Sudan)

The past 24 hours in the village of Akon have been the most incredible of my life. We were greeted on the runway by over 500 singing children and community members and leaders. David (physician and friend David Marks, who is coordinating medical supply aid with Dr. Luka Deng on the ground in Sudan) met with over 75 patients today and the line will be longer tomorrow as word spreads. From the school under trees, the clinic with not more than a roof and a table, to a public meeting where they all sang and expressed there appreciation of our visit and urgent needs, this trip has already surpassed my expectations.

Some 30 of the patients seen today had malaria. Most of them had to wade across rivers to come to school. Some walk three hours each way to get here. I’ve never in my life seen a more impoverished situation nor have I ever met more genuinely happy and appreciative people. They have fought for over 20 years for their basic freedoms, now they have to fight for their lives, the basic necessities of food, water, education and healthcare. Their main concern is to save their children. The aid we were able to bring will no doubt save lives.

We were able to arrive with all 20 crates of aid we brought from the U.S. in addition to picking up a couple hundred survival kits from CSI for returning refugees. The trip has no doubt encouraged us all to take responsibility to help and improve humankind. A world without prejudice!!

Love will lead the way,
Bk and the Team Akon
