Kenny Chesney's Song Made a Football Fan of Me
I've blogged before that I'm not all that interested in sports. Not as a spectator. Not as a player. And I think part of that stems from living in a neighborhood where people are so completely over-the-top about sports. You can't just sign your kid up for a baseball team at the local park district, you have to get him on a traveling team and plan your vacations around his all-star game schedule. And if he plays basketball, you'll need to sign up for special shooting clinics. And football? Well, he's going to need a personal trainer at the very least. It's gotten so bad that parents actually talk as if they are grooming 7-year-olds for college scholarships. But Kenny Chesney has changed my mind.
Now that his "Boys of Fall" is on the radio all the time, I can see the joy in football. Specifically, the team spirit of it all. I know that his song paints a very vivid picture of what a high school football team means in a small town: sports-page clippings on the coffee shop wall, players wearing their game-day jerseys in the hallways at school, calling out "Yes, sir, we want the ball," and helmets, cleats and shoulder pads. I can see all that in my head without even watching the video. But what I hear when I listen to the lyrics is the message about "I got your number, I got your back, when your back's against the wall." And most importantly, "You mess with one man, you got us all."
When I heard the title of this song, I just assumed it would be a deafening rocker that would serve as an anthem at pre-game pep rallies. I had no idea it would be a country ballad powerful enough to take me from an anti-football mom to the one who's counting the days until tryouts.

I’m wondering what percentage of football fans, or sports fans in general know basic football fundamentals, and how many of those believe they are essential when discussing the game?
Don’t Care says:
Just because it’s something Redmaz doesn’t like he brings up the same thing, just changes the wording to fit the subject. It must be nice to be so perfect.
As far as the video, I love it and love the song. I gets me excited for football season.

I think Kenny naied this one. I have not played Football on a field since High School 24 years ago. The first time I heard this song, I had goose bumps on my arms, I had tears in my eyes as well. The song is about the dreams of young children, living in the moment, loving it now! The feeling of the spirit of the whole team. The brothership, the bonds of all the team mates. Thats what I miss about those days. In the video, Sean says “you only feel these Friday nights again, when you get married or have children of your own”…he is so right on there. The lessons learned there in practice or playing the games will live with me a lot longer than the books taught me. Those are the lessons of life. Love it, Kenny.

Alison is still on the CMT web site but posts under the News section. I don’t think they use the blog section any more. The only reason I can get here is because I still have a link to it.

watching my two boys play high school football was one of the true highlights of my life. i’ve been a huge football fan since i was a little girl - and being able to watch my boys play - and do so well, was a huge thrill for me. watching the comraderie, teamwork, support and being together with teammates, family and friends was like nothing else in my life. i cooked for the team, made treats, decorated buses, lockers, washed smelly gear, and travelled hundreds of miles to support them and their team. each task was a huge pleasure and i was honored to be a part of it. now, that both of my boys are gone from home and in college - that is what i miss the most. i miss other sports - but nothing like football. when i watch the video for ‘boys of fall’, i get a lump in my throat and i tear up each time. it reminds me how i miss ‘MY boys of fall’!!!!

Not bad for a song to be talked about this long…maybe it’s because of the subject. The first time I heard the was around last year when my son a junior was getting ready for 2 a days in the hot Mo. sun. He was excited about making the varsity team and standing for something. I as a parent was excited for him. Two years he stood toe to toe against some of the biggest defensive lineman there were, never backing down and helping his quarterback break all the school records…..I was proud to watch him play and be part of it…..
This year I told him he needed to put in as much work as possible because when you play that last game and walk off of the field for the last time….there is a big part of you that stays right there….all winter he worked out….they did it as a team…..
This year they made it to the semi finals and lost…as he is walking off of the field with tears in his eyes I know what he is feeling….it hurts to loose but not near as bad as knowing you have played your last game….
What I didn’t realize is as a parent you leave a whole lot on that field as well….you started with a little tiny freshman and helped mold him into a man….43 games later from that first practice…..you know that the time is getting closer to where it won’t be a field he is walking out of but the front door and your house…..so you both meet at mid field with tears in your eyes….as he says….”Dad your right this really does suck” and your reply is “I know.”
I guess that’s what makes the song so special, you can feel it from a kids point when you were playing, you can feel it from a parents point….
