Kanye West's VMA Stunt Can't Be Easily Forgotten

Posted: August 13th, 2010 at 12:24 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Kanye West and Taylor SwiftKanye West wants a fur coat. Kanye West orders bellinis too early. Kanye West drinks New York City tap water. Kanye West likes his new collaboration with Beyoncé. And Kanye West is thrilled he has more than 600,000 followers on Twitter. And that's all well and good, for Kanye West. But have those 600,000 people forgotten what West did? Do they not remember that just about a year ago, he yanked the microphone out of Taylor Swift's hands during her MTV VMA acceptance speech for "Love Story" "You Belong With Me" and told her and the millions watching that, essentially, Beyoncé had the better video? I am not quite over that. So I don't know that I'd want to follow him. Plus, nothing says "It's All About Me" quite like a man with around 610,000 followers and 0 people on his following list.

Kanye wants a fur coat? Maybe while in New York this jerk should visit the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals and watch a video and discover the absolute horror those poor animals go through so Mister All-About-Me can have a fur coat.

I hope he decides to interrupt Miranda Lambert some day. He won’t do it again.

I really don’t know why anyone likes this guy.

I for sure thought Kanye was right! He didn’t do it the right way, but he was definitely right. She did not deserve all the awards she got. I also agree that you need to let this story go away.

The more people talk about it, the more I think he was paid to pull off this stunt, so everyone would feel sorry for poor Taylor. I agree with Granna- he was right, but i am sick of hearing about him and Taylor! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

Alison’s is dipping into the past and stoking the flames. Aren’t you Alison? All in the name of publicity for your despicably precious and annoyingly adorable little Miss Swift.

  • Ty says:

    Posted: August 14th, 2010 at 7:19 am

Enough is enough about this. It is being brought up again to gain publicity because Swift has a new song out. He apologized —she accepted—and that should end it. All it is doing now is reminding everyone about Swift’s very poor vocal abilities—at the grammys and on live television. Kanye only stated what a lot of us wanted to say. Swift is a very poor vocalist and is a studio product. I have been to her concert—and NO—she can’t sing. Most of her audience is very young kids with their partent/grandparents. She is still trying to be 15 years old —she has to–to keep the fans she has. I expected something better on her album this time—but it is the same old melodies/songs.

  • D Trotter says:

    Posted: August 14th, 2010 at 11:25 am

Ty, like yourself, I would be happy if I never again heard the names Kanye and Taylor Swift together in the same sentence (although, with both of them taking part in the VMA’s, site of the original debacle, that seems unlikely to happen).

But the rest of your post is just fiction. It’s just you externalizing your feelings onto what Kanye did. Kanye never once said Swift was a poor vocalist — he just said Beyonce, in his opinion, had the best video.

And no rap star would ever think it’s terrible to be a studio product … because the studio is 80% of what those albums are all about. So all of that is your opinion, not Kanye’s.
If you want to associate your views with that of an immature boor, that’s your choice I guess.

Finally, you’ve heard like one new song off the album, and you’re already passing judgment? That’s probably the same way you heard her in concert. Because concert reviewer after concert reviewer — even those expecting bad vocals because of the Grammy fallout — have said her voice was strong and effective.

Kanye screwed up. I’m sure he regrets what he did. He apologized and I forgive him. This story will never go away because it is so amazingly outrageous. Taylor had a off night during the Grammys. Both, Kanye and Taylor are going to have to live with these stories for the rest of their lives. That’s OK. Unfortunately there are embarrassing stories that we all have to live with…. especially me. Nobody’s perfect, we all make mistakes. It’s part of life. Superstars just have to live with their mistakes more publicly than most of us do. I deal with this story mostly by laughing about it. It’s hard for me to watch the recording of the Kanye event…. it’s just so amazingly outrageous. Taylor handled with incredible class though.

  • Ty says:

    Posted: August 14th, 2010 at 12:40 pm

Trotter–what I stated is NOT fiction. I HAVE been to her concerts and I experienced first hand how weak her vocals are–also the fan base. I am definately not the only one to have this opinion- the internet is full of the same opinions that I have. I agree that some artists need help in the studio, however, a lot of them have good vocals to work with. If you really listen to Taylor’s songs you can hear her vocals straining in every song she sings. Her songs are all alike and I see nothing different in her current single. THAT is my opinion—and have you never heard of free speech? It is obvious that you are a Swift fan and you are entitled to your views as well as I am entitled to mine. This article is just bringing up negative vibs again.

  • TG says:

    Posted: August 14th, 2010 at 12:56 pm

West probably got 200,000 new followers SINCE that night because many people realize now that Swift is way overrated, especially after that horrible debacle with Stevie Nicks on the Grammys.

  • D Trotter says:

    Posted: August 14th, 2010 at 2:52 pm

Ty, that’s another fiction. Forget the hater posts. I’m talking about the people who review concerts for a living. The internet is filled with review after review, concert after concert, of newspaper stories saying her vocals live are way, way better than people said. They outnumber the negative ones 99 to-1. The fans who have ACTUALLY attended and have posted are also at 99 -to-1.

Seems to me the only one bringing up the same old negative stuff again .. is you.

I agree. He’s too cocky for his own good. Yes, I’m a Taylor fan, and obviously she came out better in that situation, given that she had won in the first place, but I don’t care who he interrupted. It was such a jerk move and he never adressed it properly.
Besides, most of his Twitter followers probably just want him to go crazy on someone else for entertainment value only, rather than caring more for him than Taylor.

    Posted: August 16th, 2010 at 8:26 am

By the way, everyone, Kanye can’t sing live either. Has anyone ever heard him live? He is atrocious. And, while Beyonce’s video was fine for “booty shaking” that’s all it was. THAT is hardly artistic.

So, a guy that can’t sing, calls out a video as “the best” for booty shaking (and that wasn’t pretty, her legs are also atrocious) by putting off the actual winner who told a story in her video (whether she had studio enhanced vocals or not)? This was a vidio award after all and it was up against garbage.

But, about the rest of it, who cares now a year later?

  • Andrea says:

    Posted: August 16th, 2010 at 9:14 am

It was a great publicity stunt and didn’t hurt Taylor.
She was all over the media after that and got a lot attention. I don’t say that she knew about it… but I really think this was somehow planned by her management or record company or whatever.

    Posted: August 17th, 2010 at 11:52 am

Are people stupid? Obviously the reason it’s being brought up again is because the VMA’s are coming up next month! And because Kanye is performing at the awards and Taylor is nominated and is said to be attending….OF COURSE IT’S GOING TO BE A HOT TOPIC!

That being said…I know someone who was chosen to be a part of Taylor’s subway performance that night last year…and she performed about 5-10 minutes after Kanye interrupted her. My friend said Taylor was a hot mess and it took a lot of encouraging for her to be able to sing that night. I don’t think it was “put on by her management” like a user previously stated. I have also met Taylor multiple times and she is a very sweet person and I’m sure was genuinely hurt by the situation. But she handled it with class, and publicly forgave Kanye. She was very mature about it and all of us should be too!
Here’s the moral of the story: Kanye West has shown his ass publicly quite a few times. He’s a natural jerk. Get over it.
Taylor is a talented ARTIST (it takes more to be an artist than just vocals (which hers are growing)…compare her self-titled album with her newer stuff…she will continue to grow).
She is obviously doing something right because she has a HUGE fan base that keeps growing. And she keeps breaking records and making quite an empire for a 20-yr-old. WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Complaining about her on a blog? Nice.

  • hotelmotel says:

    Posted: August 17th, 2010 at 12:21 pm

RedBrook says “[Swift] is obviously doing something right because she has a HUGE fan base that keeps growing.” I agree. But it could also be said that Kanye West is “doing something right because he, too, has a large fan base and because he has often won critical acclaim.” … Whether it was a publicity stunt or not, I don’t feel sorry for Swift.Yes, Kanye comes off as a jerk. But Swift got a lot of publicity out of it, and even if her feelings were hurt, it has probably helped her overall.

  • Sarah says:

    Posted: August 26th, 2010 at 1:11 am

The thing LOTS of you people are forgetting here is that Taylor is an ARTIST not a “singer.” SHE WRITES HER OWN MUSIC and while she may not have the vocal ability or vocal “correctness” of Carrie Underwood she sings with feeling…and she loves what she does (not that Carrie doesn’t). ARTISTS are not always, nor do they have to be brilliant vocalists…it’s a package deal. Is Kenny Chesney the best vocalist?? Does he always have perfect pitch??? NO! But he cranks out great songs, LOVES what he does, and puts on a heck of a show. He is an entertainer. IT TAKES ALL KINDS PEOPLE!!!! Quit complaining about Swift’s vocals and let her be…she’s got talent…strengths in some areas weaknesses in others. Some of the other more “vocally perfect” female county singers (without naming names) may co-write tunes but in reality they are merely in the room..THEY ARE NOT SONGWRITERS…someone else is doing the work. CAN KANYE SING??? haha NO!!! Is Willie Nelson or George Strait the perfect singer/vocalist?? NO!!! But they sell records..what their doing and have done WORKS and its ok….like I said- IT TAKES ALL KINDS!!!!
