Taylor Swift Kicking Off NFL Season With a Concert

Posted: August 10th, 2010 at 5:14 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Taylor SwiftI predict that professional football will have a whole bunch of new fans next month. Young ones. And girl ones. I'm sure all kinds of rookies will be tuning in to the NFL's annual kick-off concert on Sept. 8 on NBC to see Taylor Swift performing in New Orleans' Jackson Square along with the Dave Matthews Band. They may even stay tuned for the actual game afterward when the Minnesota Vikings play the New Orleans Saints. This is certainly not Swift's first time singing at a sporting event. She started that around 11 years old, when she realized that singing the National Anthem was a surefire way to get potential fans' attention at Philadelphia 76ers' games. She's gone on to sing at the U.S. Open tennis tournament and even at game three of the 2008 World Series when her home-state team, the Philadelphia Phillies, was in it.

Saints-Vikes should be a great game! Maybe Swift can do that “You Belong With Me” tune, with all those cheerleaders somersaulting all over the place.

The NFL probably doubled the number of viewers who will watch the game by signing Taylor. They know what they’re doing. There will probably also be some Cover Girl, Sony, and Milk adds preceding the game as well! They will synergize nicely with the Budweiser adds. I’ll be watching!

I’m quit sure Taylor’s fan will tune in for the concert, but am not convinced at all that they’ll give the game 2 seconds of their time. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t gear the entertainment to men’s taste. But, good for her anyway.

I agree Robin. Someone like Faith Hill would be better. Eye candy for the men … and she can sing.

Sweet - I was wondering who was going to replace Faith - I guess now we know…
seriously though - S, you think Taylor was asked to do the pre-game show because she has a weak voice? Do you think Taylor hasn’t already done World Series Anthems and been told after that the rendition was beautiful by the announcers? Do you still, after a sold out world tour (that just saw 45,000 pack a Japanese stadium) after an album that won every major award that an album could win, after Fearless sold more than 10 million records worldwide, hold to that unsubstantiated claim Taylor can’t sing? May be IMHO you need your ears cleaned.

Just an objective opinion here (and yes I know, they’re hard to come by) I just went to youtube and watched clips of Taylor singing the National Anthem. I was pleasantly surprised especially given how difficult that song can be to sing. I’ve heard a number of singers with great voices mess it up. Taylor was right on the money. No she’s not a trained vocalist but she sounded great. I especially enjoyed a clip of her at 11 years of age. That was probably the best vocal performance of them all.

Anyway, after hearing the proof, I think Taylor would be a fine choice to sing the National Anthem.

Oh, and Paige - you mentioned your dad would be disappointed to find Taylor singing at this game. I guess he’d prefer Janet Jackson and a wardrobe malfunction?

I’m wondering what percentage of football fans(or sport fans in general)know basic football fundamentals, and who also believe they are essential when discussing the game?
