Taylor Swift: What's Hers Is Yours on "Mine"
She has already admitted that her upcoming album, Speak Now, to be released on Oct. 25, is going to be full of songs that are kind of like open letters to the people in her life. She described the music as "things that I wanted to say in the moment that I didn't. Track by track, each song is a different confession to a different person." And from what I've been hearing about album's very first single, "Mine," Taylor Swift is ready to be that open book. One with a memorable hook, too. "You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter/You are the best thing that's ever been mine," she sings. The song is reportedly up-tempo, with a big chorus, and according to one radio station, unmistakably Taylor. It's about avoiding, then finding, love. And knowing Swift, the song with be as refreshingly honest as she is.

Kelly Lyn says:
Can’t wait untill the Joe Jonas bashfest CD by Taylor comes out! omg this is going to be great! Speak Now Taylor!!!
granna says:
OMG, she’s back! YIKES! Well, the break was great while it lasted. My radio station hasn’t played one of her songs in a long time. All good things do come to an end.
Shelly says:
Stop the hate grandma. It’s your choice to listen to her or not. Can’t wait to HEAR her sing about Joe Jonas. It’s time!
Amanda says:
I can’t wait! It’s about time some new tunes from Taylor!
M&M says:
My radio station did a survery of songs that was requested for a week and the winner was not taylor swift! Her fans only request 5% of her songs for a 7 day period! The winner was George Strait! His songs were request 95% of the time! I guess the people down here in the south likes REAL country music and not fairy tales and school drama!!!!
Kaycee says:
Hey M&M my station is not playing much Taylor either and I am really upset. I emaled them and even called and they still dont play her. I am really mad! I no were waiting for the new music but they play other older music so what is going on?
kayko says:
Never fear Kaycee, in a few weeks they will be playing Taylor. Then we can watch M&M and bobbalynn complain.
kayko says:
Sure HEY, then why did you complain so much about hearing Taylor oh so much before. Sometime people really need to remember what they write, they look foolish when they contradict themselves.
goodguy says:
Kayko–I know it is a temptation to tease this young child. But you do not help Taylor when you provoke Hey. I am looking forward to the new song “Mine”. I know it will be wonderful!
adj18 says:
Haven’t heard her songs in Rhode Island in a while, either!
GalPal says:
Well, perhaps Joe Jonas will return the favor-they dated for around 5 months. This is normal when dating so it can’t be that tragic. She was what-17 and she is now 21. Wow-how did she survive?
SBL says:
If she is still singing about the Joe Jonas thing.. the girl needs a life. What was that 2 years ago? I’m sure we will get same old whiney Taylor in her new cd. You broke my heart.. i loved you but you dumped me, you belong with me.. yada, yada, yada… her 15 minutes has to be close to over…
D Trotter says:
I’m still trying to figure out the comments about Taylor’s airplay. Last year, she had the #1 and #3 most-played songs on the radio, any genre. Seems like airplay is not a problem.
Kiss in Rain says:
I don’t care what she sings about… You can bet it will be honest and beautiful. One of the things that makes Taylor great is the emotional connection she makes with her fans because she sings her diary. It’s very special. I can’t wait!
Robin says:
D - to be honest, Taylor’s last two songs didn’t even make country radio’s top 5. She had two of the most played songs last year because of her “non-country” top 40 airplay.
While I’m gaining some musical interest in Taylor, it’s not because I think she’s becoming “more” accepted by the pop country industry audience. I think she’s actually becoming less tolerated by those that listen to mainstream country music.
People here are talking about country stations, not radio in general. Most think she belongs on pop rock stations, and not mainstream country stations. Personally, I think she does belong on pop rock stations as she’s a great musical and personal asset to that scene. As for mainstream country, I think a little goes a long way. Wouldn’t want to see her leave mainstream country, but could use a toned down push. 90% of the people listening to mainstream country music don’t relate to Taylor’s music and are just waiting for the next song to come on.
Derrik says:
If you want my opinion i think more people need to open up to different genres of music other than just country. Country has been and will always be my first love but i love artists from Johnny Cash to Taylor Swift to Lady Gaga to AC/DC to George Strait to Eminem, i love them all. Discovering new types of music is awesome and more people need to do it and all of these insults and jabs at other people could be avoided. Just try to be more open minded. Either that or just respect other people’s opinions.

I think it depends on where in the country you live and what kind of station you are listening to. I’m on the east coast and my local country station plays Taylor frequently. I have a friend who lives in Alabama and her local station hardly ever plays her. No rhyme or reason as far as I can tell. But if it’s Taylor you want to hear, the soft rock stations around where I live play Taylor constantly. It doesn’t really matter to me because I can listen to whomever I want just by clipping in my favorite CD…what could be better than that?
hey - HEY! says:
Well there HEY! It is my opinion you have the option to go to the blogs of the “better singers out there” and write on their threads.
It is also my opinion that Taylor could have a “Love Story” success with “Mine”.
If that happens watch for more “spillover” success on all radio stations that play Taylor Swift!
D Trotter says:
Robin, I wouldn’t deny for a second that Swift has become an enormous crossover success, or that she may have as many or more fans in pop/rock as she does in Country.
Taylor is no longer just one of the biggest fishes in the Country pond; she has developed into one of the very largest fishes in the ocean of pop/rock as well. And she may take hits from some Country fans, just as Garth did, and Shania did, and Faith and so many others did. But if she calls herself a Country artist, how likely do you think it is that Country radio will disown her?
As for the observation that Swift’s “last 2 songs didn’t even make country radio’s top 5″, I’m not convinced that proves she is becoming less “tolerated” by her country base.
When those 2 songs — the title track from FEARLESS, and “Fifteen” — were released, the album they came from was already almost a YEAR OLD for the latter and 16 months old for the former.
An album that was the BEST-SELLING release of the year, any genre, on the 2009 Billboard 200. (Over 6 million people already owned the songs!)
An album that broke the Billboard 200’s ALL-TIME record for having the MOST singles (THIRTEEN!)chart on the Hot 100.
And at the end of 2009, Billboard’s Year End Hot 100 Airplay cited “Love Story” as the NUMBER ONE most-played song of the year and “You Belong to Me” as the year’s Number Two song (sorry, I called it #3 before by mistake). Both songs reached #1 on the Country charts.
“Fearless”, the single, actually had TWO runs on the Billboard Hot 100; it was FIRST released as a promotional single that sold 162,000 digital downloads, reaching #9 on the hot 100. (Swift, of course, owns the all-time record for digital sales, any genre; so in addition to the 6 million album owners of the single, there were many more who already bought it — or maybe stole it digitally).
Sixteen months later, “Fearless” was officially released as the album’s last single — and reached #10 on the Country charts. Me, I think that’s amazing! Was there ANYONE who didn’t already own it?
Before that, “15″ was an 11-month-old single that reached #7 on the Country charts. Hardly embarrassing.
Finally, whether they’re Country, whether they were “Top Country 5″ or not, WHAT they both ARE … is great songs.
AMERICAN SONGWRITER magazine rave about about the impressive lyric writing on “Fearless”, while The United Kingdom’s THE OBSERVER called it one of Swift’s “great songs”,with “perceptive lyrics about universal truths”.
And “Fifteen” was called:
“fantastically good” by THE GUARDIAN;
the album’s “standout” song by THE VILLAGE VOICE;
one of the top 12 singles of 2009 by the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
and “one of the best songs Taylor’s written” by THE NEW YORK TIMES.
Robin says:
Well, D - I happened to be a bit disheartened that her best song to date didn’t make the country top five and her most mindless made it to #1. While “Fifteen”, I think one of her very best most well written and well concieived songs was released near the end and didn’t do so well (on country radio) and “Love Story” flew up the charts, even though it too was selling like wildfire at it’s release says more about country radio’s interest.
They will never disown her and I don’t think her country award winning days are over either. I think she’ll be limited to awards for songs and albums. And, she’s definetly not got anything to be embarrassed about. I didn’t say nor try to imply that. But, I do think her success has pushed her so far to pop rock that the adults listening to country radio, just are “that” interested. Until her music relates to adults, she’ll never own the “country” stature of Garth. I’m hoping with this album, she’ll show a growth and maturity that will show her to be an artist here to stay.
Through all of Shania’s issues, it was never country radio that left her. The awards, yes, they left. But, Shania and Garth are two of the most played artists on country radio and they aren’t even active artists.
debra says:
taylor is not country but shes laughing all the way to the bank!!!
S says:
The fact that she’s still bashing Joe Jonas in songs shows her maturity level. She’s probably still mad that he wrote the following in the song “Much Better.”
“And all the tears on her guitar, I’m not bitter. But now I see, everything I’d ever need, is the girl in front of me, she’s much better.”
She seems the type who has to get the last word in………….
Robin says:
Really S, you listened to a Joe Jonas song? No more complaining about Taylor - ok? You have just trumped yourself.
D Trotter says:
S,
News flash! The girl who was “much better” — well, she wound up dumping Joe.
Now THAT should be worth a Taylor-tune or two!
Lessee … “Whatever comes around, goes around, goes around”… no, wait, that’s a Timberlake thingy.
Hmmm … How about …
“Just remember what I told you
That in time, you’re gonna pay ….”
nscomet68 says:
Why would you think there would be any Joe Jonas bashing on this album? If you read what it says in the blog above “Track by track, each song is a different confession to a different person.” At most there could be one cut about JJ. I don’t see why you would think there would be even one. Forever and Always took care of that.
dawn says:
I think taylors new album will be great!I dont think it will be all about joe jonas either.I wish her luck in all she does.I also dont think people will have to worry about air play,or a lack their of it,real soon that will be taken care of……
S says:
I don’t listen to Joe Jonas. I heard this on the Internet and had to Google “Joe Jonas’ song about Taylor Swift” to even get the name and lyrics.
D trotter says:
S, do you buy all those Jonas Brothers fanzines and stuff, too?
Scarlett says:
To the people that keep saying Taylor continues to sing songs about Joe Jonas, where is your evidence? It’s like you’re holding that as the almighty test to the maturity of Swift as a songwriter and performer. As far as we know, she wrote ONE song about her breakup with Joe (Forever & Always). Who knows about her new album? And she has said before too that people think she has had many boyfriends, yet she has only had a few. She can write many songs inspired by only a few relationships because there are so many perspectives you can take. Why is she not allowed to continue writing about him?
Shelly says:
scarlett, it was reported months ago on a CMT blog that the new CD was about Joe Jonas. nscomet68 it says, “track by track each song is different confession TO a different person” Not ABOUT a different person. That means she’s telling different people about Joe Jonas in each song. Can’t wait to hear it!!!!
rosyz says:
It does not matter what kind of songs she sings, I’m sure her fans will love them.
S says:
Yes they will rosyz. No matter how flat and off-key she sings. Personally I don’t see the fascination with her.
D Trotter says:
Millions of people love Taylor’s singing and the way she sounds like a “real” person, instead of some emotionless android.
The fact that she’s had a couple of moments in her teen years where either her technique, her nerves or her stage equipment have failed her — simply proves that even prodigies have flaws to try to improve and perfect. They call it being human .. like the rest of us.
dawn says:
No offense S.I respect your oponion, but that being said, you dont have to see the fasination with Taylor, millions of fans think she is great!.
trink says:
dawn, and millions of people like taking drugs too. Quantity does not mean quality. It just means there are the weak of mind amongst us.
Robin says:
All I know is that I will always picture S in front of the radio listening to Jonas Brothers songs.
The image is there. No correction necessary. I’ll just keep repeating it over and over and over and over again since that seems to be what makes things true.
