Clay Walker's New Single Has Me Wound Up
When Clay Walker was singing on Lopez Tonight a couple of weeks ago, I was thinking that I could almost make a living out of loving him. I have felt that way since 1994, when I bought his If I Could Make a Living album. For 16 years I've been crazy about his voice. On Lopez, he did "She Won't Be Lonely Long," which is a great tune made even better with his subtle Texas twang. But what has me even more wound up is his new one, "Where Do I Go From You?" It's so him. With mandolin and steel behind him, he seems to have one-upped himself musically and vocally. He sounds like a cross between Rascal Flatts' Gary LeVox and George Strait on this one. I know that may not sound like a straight-up combination, but I swear it works.
On paper, it's just a break-up song. But lyrically, asking questions like "Where does a man have to go to get over the truth?" and "Where do I go from you?" sets the song apart from your typical boo-hoo heartbreakers. As Walker says, "You can just get lost in the groove or you can ponder the lyrics ... it goes down good either way."
From "Rumor Has It" and "The Chain of Love" to "A Few Questions" and "'Fore She Was Mama," I've been quietly loving his every move even when radio did not. (I didn't care for the video for "Fall" but I can overlook one song and still love the rest.) If you don't have the new album, you can stream his latest song on Walker's MySpace page. Then come back here and tell us what you think. Am I right about the LeVox-Strait thing?

I loved your review - you are certainly right on the money about his talent, not sure about the cross between Gary LeVox and George Strait. But I agree, I think I could make a living out of loving Clay Walker myself.

I think Clay is back in the saddle with this new CD..not that he ever left it in my opinion. As far as the cross between Levox and Straight, not a Levox fan, but yes on the Straigt end of things…Clay is a STRAIGHTWALKER!
Now if ONLY I could “Make A Livin Out Of Lovin” him~I would be a millionair!
Thanks for the GREAT review.

I’m with you - wish I could make a livin’ out of lovin’ him. Have been a fan for about as long as you have. Can’t remember the first time we saw him in concert but Kevin Sharp was with him. I’ve always loved Clay’s voice - sure am glad to have some new music from him! And yes believe it or not I can hear a bit of the Levox/Straight combo too. :)

I agree with you on this…Clay is a down-home great guy, as well as a great entertainer. I have been following him for years & love all of his songs. He can sure put on a show for the women!!! Ever year he seems to get better, like George Strait. Even though he has MS he does not let it get in his way and that is a big accomplishment (I know, I suffer with this disease myself)He has use his celebrity status to make people aware of this disease as well as show us we can still live a good life with it. I hold him close & dear to my heart.

I’ve been a Clay FAM as long as I can remember. Thanks for the great review! His new CD is full of hits and I wish the label would release more of them sooner, rather than later. “Double Shot of John Wayne” is awesome and another favorite of mine is “Like We Never Said Good-bye”.
I could (and do) listen non-stop to the whole CD! :)

Thanks for the great review on Clay. It’s so nice to finally see him get a little regonition for his great talent. He hasn’t had that in years. Yes, he is one sexy man, but his voice is totally awesome and out of this world. He is one of the few who has a very distinct sound. When you hear him on the radio you know that’s him singing. So many of the newbies sound so much alike and have no distinctness at all. Everyone should listen to his new album. It’s great from start to finish. Clay is a great all around guy who has always been appreciative of his longtime loyal fans, like you and I. Keep on with the great music and shows Clay!

Alison, I agree with you completely. I’ve been a fan of Clay’s from the early days. But there’s been one thing that’s kinda bugging me…I know he has made a video for “She Won’t Be Lonely Long”, but why is it not being played on CMT? I’ve seen it once or twice on GAC, but I don’t get that channel at my place. Could someone tell me why that is?

CLAY IS THE COMPLETE PACKAGE…PERFECT!!! I’ve been a huge fan for many, many years; I grew up in a small town near Beaumont, and always knew THIS TEXAS BOY would make it BIG! He deserves way more recognition for his great talent than he has received; thanks for article…and I would have been a millionaire a long time ago if “I COULD MAKE A LIVIN OUT OF LOVIN YOU” KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK CLAY!!
