Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" Fits Country With Fiddle

Posted: July 15th, 2010 at 9:53 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

I always worry when I see the words "Country Version" in parentheses. But this "Hey, Soul Sister" pop song by Train is one of my very favorites ever since I saw the Dixie Chicks cover it in concert this summer. Natalie Maines introduced it as "one of those songs you hate that you didn't write" and they added some nice mandolin. Come to think of it, maybe that's where Train got the idea to turn the song into a country one. Anyway, their (Country Version) is really the exact same song and video but you can hear a whole lot of fiddle. And that makes it country enough for me.

Funny thing about the ‘country’ qualification. Last week JRFM in Vancouver had Train’s song on as a challenger for their nightly New Country Challenge. Despite a few callers saying it wasn’t country, it actually won that night. A bunch of aggressively negative comments followed and Train lost the second night.

This has always been a great song, and I love this version…whether it’s pure “country” or not. :)

Such an amazing song, sounds so much better than the original in my opinion. Hear this for the first time on my Sprint Radio on my cell and have had it stuck in my head for the last 3 days until I was finally able to get to this computer. :D

    It’s a great Pop/Top 40 song, but it’s not Country. Not being a hater, I just don’t think it’s Country.

Yksinkertainen ja makea. Olen harkinnut toisen blogin tai viisi melko pian, ja tulee varmasti harkita tätä aihetta. Pidä ‘em coming!

It figures that this steaming growler would eventually end up on “country” radio. The terrible-est of the terrible. I’m surprised Kenny Chesney didn’t jump at the chance to cover this garbage.
