Lady Antebellum Lovin' On Everyone Right Now

Lady AntebellumLady Antebellum's Hillary Scott loves music. All kinds of music. So I was thrilled when I got the chance to ask her about the song she recorded with rockers Maroon 5. She talked about how sexy frontman Adam Levine's voice is. And how she wore out her copy of their Songs About Jane album from 2002. But more than that, she was all about producer Robert "Mutt" Lange who put the album together. "That was just a dream come true to work with Mutt. We were on a conference call and he was calling from his castle in Switzerland. It was unreal," she said. The song is called "Out of Goodbyes" and will be on Maroon 5's next album, Hands All Over.

Then we talked songwriting. She has a song, co-written with Miranda Lambert, called "Suffocating" on Blake Shelton's upcoming release. "His voice, honestly, is just the best. He has so much feeling on the vocals," she said. Scott told me it's a heart-wrenching tune about how the memory of a person you love can suffocate you. And how the rollercoaster of emotions after you get out of a relationship really makes your heart hurt. She sang me a little bit, with a line like "the pain is growing like a vine, strangling my heart." It sounds full of just the kind of misery I like in my country music.

Co-writing with Lambert was beneficial for Scott, too, because she said Lambert's a dear friend but one who pushes her to be better. "Right now, the vibe in the country music community is everyone is just lovin' on each other," Scott told me. It's like everyone wants the best for each other -- hence, all the co-writes and song-sharing. We even talked about the reaction Lambert's "The House That Built Me" has been getting by critics. Mostly positive, but occasionally not. "If 'House' doesn't strike a chord, then you just don't have a soul," she said. Amen, sister.
