Danny Gokey's "I Will Not Say Goodbye" Inspires

Posted: July 6th, 2010 at 12:20 pm  |  By: Danielle Hartman

Throughout my life, I've found many songs I can relate to, but rarely do they resonate with me as much as Danny Gokey's "I Will Not Say Goodbye." The lyrics, about not letting go of a loved one's memory, are touching and emotionally hard-hitting, while the music video tells the stories of people who have lost a husband, a mother and a son. Having lost my father when I was 15, I've personally experienced the emotions in this ballad, written by Chuck Cannon, Lari White and Vicky McGehee after the funeral of the 13-year-old son of Nashville songwriter Jeffrey Steele. And I respect Gokey greatly for having the strength to sing it, especially considering he lost his 27-year-old wife, Sophie, in 2008. However, having a close friend or family member pass away doesn't mean you can't think about them anymore. "I Will Not Say Goodbye" inspires me to do just the opposite.

Love the song and love the video. Danny has just an amazing voice and sings with such heart. Video makes me cry but does actually have an inspiring message.

I love this song, and I noticed it was co-written by Lari White. Lari is one of those people who causes me to shake my head in wonder at the entertainment business. I have absolutely no idea why Lari is not as famous as Jewel, Carrie, Taylor or Miranda, outside Nashville’s inner-circle. She can sing like a bird, and her video to “I’m Crazy” was hilarious! Also, her performance in “Castaway” was darn cute. I thought she would do more movies after that. I wish she was out there more. I adore her.

What a song. Credit both the songwriters and Danny Gokey for a great job on this one.

I’m with you Peacock, I’ve always liked Lari too & wondered why she’s (still)not on the charts like our other favorites. She has a great voice and is very pretty & personable too. Glad she is still contributing with her songwriting talents though.

Nice article, Danielle. :) It’s sad that we know and understand all the emotions in this song, makes me miss Dad lots! He’d be so proud of where you are today, I’m so sure of it. Great video, made me cry like a baby!
