Carrie Underwood's All About the Outdoor Shows

Posted: July 6th, 2010 at 9:42 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Carrie UnderwoodSince Carrie Underwood was playing Provo, Utah, this past weekend (July 3), she was able to get on a conference call with some of the state newspapers and talk about her summer plans. No, not THAT summer plan. Just the concerts. The Salt Lake Tribune noted that one of the good things about her summer is that it's "all about the outdoor concerts because everybody is there to have a good time, and people are happy and excited and even though it's probably hot and sticky and whatnot, there's nothing like that." When she brings her show out of the stuffy indoor arenas, she calls it an "outdoor goodie" and said the holiday weekend shows are even better. "It is very special, because the Fourth of July is all about having fun outdoors and just enjoying our country and enjoying the things that are around us, so it does feel like it's a really special thing." She also talks about being a longtime Randy Travis fan and how when she was scrolling through her iTunes and saw his "I Told You So," she thought, "Oh my gosh, that can be sung by a girl."

I wish she’d put at least one re-make on every album. This would keep her older fans in touch with classic country hits and would be a great introduction to some of those hits for her younger fans. I really wish she’d have put her version of “Stand By Your Man” on ‘Play On’.

The Stadium of Fire concert in Utah apparently was great and sold out. Carrie was amazing. She also sang the National Anthem and wow her voice was unbelievable.

She also did great on her outdoor concert in Milwaukee. As one reviewer said , her voice shines and as does her personality. Another one said, the crowd were impressed both her vocal talent but also her ability to captivate the audience. What an amazing performer. I am really a proud fan.

The Stadium of fire was really lucky to have Ms Underwood sing the National Anthem to kick off their Freedom Days celebrations for their Monster Fireworks Show.
So much more appropriate to have Carrie at this Patriotic event than last year’s featured artists, The Jonas Bros.

It does seem like it’s getting a little scary to attend the Stadium of Fire event.
Not only has it been coming under fire for pandering to right-wing extremism, now the fans are LITERALLY coming under fire, with fireworks shooting into the stands and injuring people. Thankfully, none got shot onto the stage.

It appears that 50 thousand people didn’t find it so scary..as for the fire works mishap, I’m sure it wasn’t intentional..

I’m not quite sure what the purpose of your post has..

    Kate,
What part of my post wasn’t clear?
The first paragraph basically gave kudos to Ms Underwood, the epitome of the All-American Girl and someone who recently had one of her performances of the National Anthem ranked among the top 10 most memorable renditions.
Certainly the 50,000 people at the Stadium of Fire fireworks display couldn’t have gotten a better featured performer to “ignite” this patriotic festival.

The second part of my post had to do with the annual Stadium of Fire event itself. I believe they have twice set the world record for setting off the most fireworks simultaneously, and that’s great.
But when you have a BYU football stadium packed with families and little kids, it would nice to pay more attention to proper safety precautions.
Nobody said it was done on purpose. But I read reports of numerous and some serious injuries, and of people in the stands being panicked. I hardly think the fans who had explosives shooting at their faces “didn’t seem to mind”.

What’s up with the defenders that they can’t read posts lately?

Kate - D Trotter seemed to be making a point that Carrie was a great show for these folks and a much better choice than last years performers. The accident had nothing to do with Carrie but a conversation about the venue needing to be more careful with so many people stuffed in a stadium and I agree. D didn’t say that it was done on purpose.

    D.Trotter

Your explanation is clear, too bad you didn’t think of saying that in your first post.

The second paragraph of your first post did nothing but expound on the unsavouriness of the Stadium of Fire event..i.e. “pandering to right-wing extremism” and of course the ‘fireworks mishap’ If the goal was to compliment Carrie (as your follow-up post suggests) I thought you picked an odd way of expressing it and begged the question; What’s the purpose of this post?

Kate - D. Trotter and I don’t always see eye to eye and Lord knows Robin has no use for me but they’re both correct. I saw nothing in D. Trotter’s comments that were in any way derogatory towards Carrie. The comments about the event itself seemed to be simply an aside and no reflection on Carrie, personally. Your defensive posture in this case is unwarranted IMO.

    J.J. Robin,

Interpretations are as varied as the people who make them.

I don’t feel that my 2 sentences were ‘defensive’. At least not any more or less than both of your responses..I could say that the ‘defensive posture’ comes from you, not me.

Kate, whenever I can, I like to add some local color to my comments. But none of them are so complex as to require any decoding, symbolic analysis, or interpretation.

Apparently you took offense to my aside about the festival “coming under fire for pandering to right wing extremism” — a comment that has NOTHING to do with Carrie, or her performance, cheered by 50,000 patriotic fans. And frankly, it hardly rises to the elaborate detail implied by you. (”Expounding”???).

It’s just a simple comment, rooted in local news.
(Closing sentence from a July 3, 2010 story in the Salt Lake Tribune:
“This is not the first time the festival has been criticized for favoring the political right. Organizers drew criticism when conservative talk-show hosts were named as hosts of the Stadium of Fire in past years.”)

Do you really think the Tribune was “expounding” on the “unsavouriness”(sic) of Provo’s biggest annual event??

How about this entry in Wikitravel’s “Provo Travel Guide”:… “Provo (is) in Utah County, often considered the most conservative county in the most conservative state in the country.” Is that a slam? A compliment? Or just local color and trivia?

I’ll leave it to your “interpretation” You will anyway.
