Chris Young's Career Is Flying High

Posted: June 29th, 2010 at 5:30 pm  |  By: Chris Young

Chris YoungI started today's blog entry on my way to Milwaukee to sing the national anthem at a Brewers' baseball game. It seems like I have been flying a ton lately. Before I flew out to join the Nothing Like This tour with Kellie Pickler and Rascal Flatts this weekend, I actually started things off on a high note in Nashville. At the Music Row Awards, I won the 2010 breakthrough songwriter of the year award! It was my first award as a songwriter and I was pumped. Then it was off to Raleigh, N.C., for the kickoff of the tour.

I could never have imagined how much fun I would have on this tour. From night one the crowds, Kellie, Rascal Flatts, all of their management and crew completely took care of us. Everyone in the audience seemed to enjoy our part of the show (thanks if you were there!), and the guys even pulled Kellie and I onstage for the encore -- "Summer Nights." Kellie's show was great, and Rascal Flatts' show is nothing short of amazing. They have these cool video screens that you just have to see to believe.

The next two nights in Charlotte, N.C., and Atlanta, Ga. were fantastic, too. I even started playing basketball before soundcheck with Gary, Jay, Joe Don and some of their crew. I haven't had this much fun in a while and I can't wait to be back on the tour when it resumes in a few weeks in Nevada. I have shows on my own this coming week in Alabama, Missouri and New Mexico. If we are in your area, come on out and see us!

To answer a few of your questions from last week, Vanessa, thanks for the compliments on my cover choices. We have actually been discussing possible cover options for the new album, but nothing has been decided on yet. Staying on this topic, Julia, I've never thought about doing an entire cover album, but if it was an option, you could count on a lot of Keith Whitley and Vern Gosdin being in the mix. Anna, as for what is in my iPod, well, I have a mix of all kinds of music. To be honest, lately I have been writing a ton for my new album, so I have been spending a lot of time listening to demos of songs that I have recently co-wrote and songs that have been pitched to me. I have to catch my next flight, but thanks to all of you who submitted questions and I hope to see you all on the road soon. -- CY

AN IDEA FOR YOUR ‘COVER ALBUM’, SILVER WINGS BY THE HAG. I THINK YOU WOULD DO IT WELL!

Oh, please, please, please do a cover album and record Vern’s “Is It Raining at Your House.” I love that song, and I would so love to hear you record it and have it on the radio for the under-25-years crowd to hear. I don’t think many of the Taylor Swift fans know who Vern Gosdin was!!!! Let’s introduce them, O.K.?

Also, “Cherokee Fiddle” by Michael Martin Murphy. Okay?
    Love ya!

There are many songs that I hope will be on the new CD. Such as “Perfect to Me”, “Sad in the Sand”, and “I Think I Paid
For This Bar”. It would be awesome if you could do a classics CD. I love “Is it Raining At Your House”, Devil Woman and “Ruby Ann” “I Never Go Around Mirrors” and “I’m No Stranger to the Rain”, “I Think I’ll just stay here and Drink” and “Walk on By” plus any of the covers you do in your show such as “Keep Your Hands to Yourself”, “Rubba Dubbin’” and “Politics, Religion and Her”.I also hope that you will put out a Christmas CD. I treasure the indie one that you put out and I play it all year. I loved your duet with Dirks singing “All My Ex’s Live in Texas”

I had the privilege of getting to meet you when you came to Greenville, S.C. with Alan Jackson! What a nice man and a great show!

Would you ever consider doing a cover of a Brooks and Dunn song?

Cherokee Fiddle was sung by Johnny Lee not Michael Martin Murphy.

As always, so nice to hear from you, Chris. I am excited about all the new fans who will discover you on the RF Tour. Love that you are having fun in your downtime and playing some bball. Soooo, what do you think about being on “Dancing With the Stars”? Is that something you might consider if offered? ~ SC

    Sara,
Michael Martin Murphy recorded it first. I have the 45 that I still play on my 30-year-old turntable. “Carolina in the Pines” is on the A side, and “Cherokee Fiddle” is on the B side.

I have heard Johnny Lee’s version, but I prefer MMM’s because I am an uber-MMM fan!

    Sara,
Actually, we are both right and both wrong! Michael Martin Murphey wrote “Cherokee Fiddle” for Johnny Lee. I am not sure if Johnny recorded it first or Michael. Doean’t matter though. Both did great with it!

The best cover of his has to be When You Say Nothing At All…I think it would be great to hear him and Allison Krauss do a duet together…Although he can sing anything and still sound great, he has one of the country sounding voices still alive today and I love it…it’s impossible to not fall in love with his voice!!! <3
