Reba McEntire Covers Beyoncé on Unplugged

Posted: May 24th, 2010 at 5:38 pm  |  By: Link Ray

Everybody knows that Reba McEntire is still as cool as they come even after 35 years of chart-topping success. But did you know that she's so hip to Beyoncé? In the latest installment of CMT's Unplugged, McEntire puts her soulful country spin on the R&B hit "If I Were a Boy." It might sound like a contradiction for a country queen like Reba to do a cover song, especially a pop cover, but give it a listen to find out how McEntire makes it her own. Then check out the rest of her Unplugged performance, including tracks from her latest album, Keep On Loving You.

I’ll bet you didn’t know this but Reba McEntire has been a Pop singer for probably longer than Beyonce has been alive. Every single released to radio by her has been on the Pop Charts. Reba is just as much a Pop singer as Beyonce. They just happen to be in different genres of POP Music. Of course if you can prove that Reba is a Roots artist and not a Pop act, I’ll retract my statement.

Hey, if you think about it, their both down home country girls! Reba-Oklahoma, and Beyonce-Texas. So, not really such a far stretch. I’m sure if someone were to actually ask Beyonce what her take is, not just of Reba’s rendition, but of Reba herself, I’m sure she would say she was a fan. I bet my money on it. Reba did a great job of making it her own, country wise.

P.S.-She’s also a Lady Gaga fan! How awesome is that. She loves Dolly and Gaga? There’s no one better in my book! You rock Reba!

It was okay, but the original is still better. I don’t quite believe her interpretation as much as I believe Beyonce’s. There’s soul in Reba’s, but I felt it much more with Beyonce.

I cannot understand, you say that we can’t compare these two muses because they’re so different. BUT you’re the first ones to say that this version is better than the original?!!?

    O.o

    I’ll say again..BEYONCE IS IMCOMPARABLE!!!
The most complete singer I have ever seen.

And I agree with Chris’ comment!! humility in the first place.

Sorry if I hurt someone with my words!

this is better than the original bcoz it had more feeling than just being egotistical & a show off/ or a poser.

I have to say that although both of these women have completely different styles of music they are both IMCOMPARABLE!

Reba McEntire has more number one singles and number albums on the Billboard charts worldwide in her entire career than any other female artist in history. She has sold over 55 million copies of all her albums. She has done more than prove herself. Beyonce has 20 number ones and 25 million in record sales which is amazing and she did do that song with more pop and emotion. I love Beyonce. However, Reba is the better artist, Not to mention very much more established as a celebrity.

Why are people acting as if country and R&B live on opposite ends of some spectrum? It may on corporate radio dials but where I’m from country and R&B could throw a stone at each other. Same soul, different souls interpreting it.

And, this song is lyrically very much in the country tradition. It has narrative, a strong voice, few runs. And Reba can do almost anything with that voice and presence — something another huge presence with a big voice would probably understand and appreciate: Beyonce.

    This isn’t a competition.

I very much agree with tressiemc….
These women are both extremely talented and accomplished artists….I wish people would stop comparing and appreciate the diversity in each artist as brilliant in each of their own rights….Music is brilliant in many different arenas. That is the beauty of diversity….Talent comes in many shapes, colors, sizes, genres….When we learn to appreciate them in their own way, we can really appreciate the art of music. Great job Reba! It was a wonderful rendition of an awesome original.

I think she did great, but I did not get the actual emotion that Beyonce puts into the song. I also didn’t feel the build after the bridge. Overall she did do great.

OMG!! Beyonce is the much better!!!! I don’t know why Reba is copy her!!!!!!! I mean!!!!!! REba is destroid jis beautiful song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr. Tina….what did you say?…I read your comment 5 times and still don’t get it…………. Reba can sing whatever song she wants to sing….She could sing the phone book and I’d buy it.

I will say this……both Reba and Beyonce have their versions-and there both fantastic. But to compare these two amazing artists would be ridiculous. Reba is country-she put a country twist on an amazing pop/r&b hit that Beyonce had. Beyonce could have never had a hit on country radio with that song, but I’m sure If-and I do say “IF” Reba were to release it as a single, she would definitely have a number one hit with that. And that’s great for both of these talented artists.

And to comment…..both of these ladies are incomparable. There will never be another Beyonce, and there certainly will never, ever be another REBA-Barbara Mandrell said so herself.

Let’s just think about like this….now we have two great renditions of this song, and not just one!

Let’s hope for a CMT Crossroads with them! Then all of us will be happy!
