Jennifer Nettles Opens Up About Tattoos, Divorce and Rookie Songwriting
When a world-class country singer calls in for a phone interview, you are usually given an allotted time to chat. Five minutes, sometimes 10. But you rarely get to just talk and talk and talk. Yet this recent story from The Gazette newspaper in Colorado Springs, Colo., makes it sound like Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles had all the time in the world.
She talks first about her three tattoos -- the word "Believe," a heart with wings and a flower -- and her philosophy for the way she approaches getting inked. "People tattoo for different reasons. I use a tattoo as a marker of time, to be reminded of a time in my life," she says, adding that it's a little bit like the line in "Take Me as I Am," about how "we all live with the scars we choose." Then she gives a couple of details about her personal life, saying, "I'm from the South, and if you're not married early, it's off to the convent." (That first marriage, to a club owner, ended in divorce.) "I try to keep my personal life personal," she explains. "People are really interested in this? This is so bizarre. It gets a bit toxic."
But then, even better, she admits that the first song she ever wrote for the Jennifer Nettles Band when she was 17 was awful. It was "He Couldn't Give Up the Bottle so She Had to Give Back His Name." I doubt it was all that bad, and I for one would love to hear it some day.

I’m sure jens early writing is better than Taylors. At least, judging by the title, it is an adult theme and not about high school crushes.

Does your songs have to do with real life? Did U have a Joey in your life? Did U have time when U looked back and then wrote (Stayin???) I like your songs they hit home
