Buzz on Miley Cyrus' New Video "Can't Be Tamed"

Posted: May 5th, 2010 at 4:13 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Miley CyrusMiley Cyrus's latest video is a work of art. As it should be, and as all music videos have the potential to be. It is not meant to define who she is as a person or as a teenager. It is just an expression of the song. Yet so much of the buzz on this new "Can't Be Tamed" video is questioning its age appropriateness. And all I have to say to that is, if Cyrus, 17, made videos that were appropriate for 17-year-olds, guess who would watch them? Twelve-year-olds. That's just the nature of celebrity, especially in the music business. I'm guessing she wants to try to capture some of the older kids and young adults who might be ready for another side of Cyrus. (The extremely sexy side, in a $25,000 corset designed by The Blonds with 2,400 metal pieces and peacock feathers.) The song itself is fast-talking pop, with lyrics about how guys give her mad attention 'cause she's built like that, and how she can't be tamed, saved, blamed or changed. In a way, this video finds Cyrus on the same path as Carrie Underwood. Think about the range of artistic videos she has done and that have been accepted by her fans. From her classically country "I Told You So" on the iconic Opry stage to the expertly choreographed and highly styled "Cowboy Casanova." So just like Cyrus can have a poignant take on "The Climb," she can also put this new one into the mix in the hopes that it will find its way to a whole new set of fans.

My first post didn’t post-hmmmmm. She is not country and she said as much. Just because her last name is Cyrus, doesn’t make it so. Leave Miley to Disney!

Umm yeah the video is a little risky. I don’t think she is aiming for people to watch it, who are her own age, but for people of the pop industry to watch it so she can get more attention. I would NEVER campare her to Carrie Underwood. I love Carrie Underwood and yeah they may have done a little similar type of videos but the LYRICS are way opposite. Carrie is chrisitan and in none of her songs does she say “I can’t be saved, blamed, changed” but Miley does in this song for instance. Yeah thats all.

I honestly don’t like Carrie or Miley but comparing the two is seriously WRONG. At least Carrie can sing..

There is nothing remotely similar about Miley’s video and Carrie’s. Miley’s is nothing but bump and grind and made that much worse because it was done by a 17 y.o. I suppose her parent’s are proud. Videos like that, music like that and its content have helped to desensitize teens to the point where children are acting sexual when they haven’t a clue what it means. People like Miley send that message and it’s disgusting. No, Miley certainly isn’t alone. Many, many others have led the way.

While I’m not a huge fan of Taylor Swift’s (her music not her as a person) I’m beginning to come around to the fact that she’s at least a good role model. She’s in an industry where sex sells and she’s tried very hard not to give into the pressure of that and still be successful.

I think Miley will one day regret the path she’s chosen to take.

First of all, I find it disgusting that anyone would compare Carrie Underwood to Miley. Carrie is a young woman who can SING, write, play guitar and paino, and actually cares about sticking to her Christian values and making sure she presents herself appropriately.

Of course she’s not 100% conservative, but she wears shorts undearneath outfits and never shows too much. She knows talent wins over sex.

Carrie also cared enough to go back to school and finish earning her degree even AFTER she became successful after winning American Idol.

    Where to start with Miley?

She sings cheesy immature songs for a narrow target audience, cannot sing or play insturements, and doesn’t appear to care about how she presents herself. Her pole dancing, provocative Vanity Fair photo shoots, and corset-donning,half naked videos prove enough.

Not to mention her ignorant comments towards others, including her narrow-minded views of country music, disgusting “my boyfriend and I” are smarter than other people” jabs, and the infamous “I don’t listen to pop music” remarks, which insult the very genre she is a part of.

You would never hear artists in country music talk like that, especially to the press.

Even though I tend to be harsh towards Taylor (even if I enjoy some of her songs as guilty pleasures), I have also gained new respect for her as a role model.

After seeing Miley’s video this morning, I actually felt sorry for her. It’s obvious she is growing up too fast, and it’s conflicting with her younger audience. She didn’t appear to be comfortable in the video, and it was a little uncomfortable to watch some of the scenes.
Many other pop artists are forced to grow up too fast, and it ruins them.

Virtually every pop star sells sex, and it’s sad. From Riahanna to Miley to Christina to Britney to Keshia to Lady Gaga to many others.

That’s one of the reasons I respect country music so music. All the ladies know how to look classy AND sexy without letting it overshadow the music or videos. I appreciate Carrie, Taylor, Hilary Scott, Miranda, Reba, Martina, and so many other ladies for showing you can be classy and talented in this industry and still be successful.

Because of losing respect for a few pop stars for selling their image over the music, I have gained a new respect for country music. Taylor is young, but I appreciate her more after realizing that she is one of the only well-known pop artists who cares about preserving who she is and not trying to force an image that isn’t true to her. She is classy, respectful, and sings writes and performs the only way she knows how.

Kudos to all the truly CLASSY ladies of country music!

Why do we have to have Miley on here? I mean, she’s made it clear that she doesn’t want to be part of country music. I don’t hate her, and I like some songs, but if she doesn’t want to be country, I don’t want to see her on a country station.
And while I can value a music video as a piece of art and not necessarily as something to define a singer personally, it is still a bit much. Yeah she’s growing up, but this doesn’t make me think of her as any more mature. And again, not country.

First, Cyrus is not country. Second, she’s a ’skank in training’, who’s edging closer to graduation. It wouldn’t be too surprising if within a few years, Cyrus is covered in tattoos and is hanging out with the lowest of lows. The sorts of Amy Winehouse and Lindsay Lohan come to mind as examples.

Seriously Alsion, comparing the two is insane to say the least. I mean Carrie is classy, respectful, and a role model. The other is trashy and skanky. How can you compare the videos? Carrie always keeps her videos and lyrics of songs appropriate for all ages. Can the same be said for Miley - NO. I had respect for what you said on your blogs until now. Now you have convinced me that you have no idea what you talk about at times. This is stupid.

What I’m not crazy about in this and other pop songs is the crutch of using Autotune thru the song. Autotune isn’t art,it’s a tool to compensate for less than stellar vocal ability.

Sorry have to disagree with you on this one Alison, this isn’t art, it’s using sexual exploitation of a minor to sell. The true point is Miley is still a minor, and if she wants to portray herself this way she should have waited until she was of legal age, her parents should have taken steps to protect her from this, they are still legally responsible for her until she turns 18. At the beginning of the video one of the male dancers reaches over and lays his hand on her chest, and Miley pushes his hand away, how is groping a minor “art”????? Even if there is no real physical contact the visual message it is sending out is wrong on every level there is. You need to watch the video again a bit closer this time and pick up on the true message being sent. Has our society become so desensitized that we are ok with a minor doing this kind of garbage, it’s not art, it’s exploitation at it’s best.

Miley supports her parents, so they probably don’t care what she does. She stated to Ryan Seacrest that she has bought a house and will be moving into it soon. 17 yrs old and a house of her own…wow!! At 17 she is doing this kind of video….what’s it going to be like when she’s older?????? Sounds like she is starting on her downward spiral like the rest of them!

“Cowboy Cassanova” and “Can’t be tamed” the same? Hmm. I don’t remember hands all over each other on the cowboy song. I will have to check it out again. Why are so many artists using the chipmunks on their songs. I love the chipmunks, but enough is enough.

Miley is trying to get out from her Hannah Montana image and try to move on. She wants to attract the bit older fans rather than just the 12 year old. But then those 12 year olds are the one buying the albums and selling concerts. She is playing a character on this video but unfortunately it is inappropriate for her age.

She is making decisions and choices of her life; she is young and she is going to make mistakes. We all make mistakes and she is not perfect. She is a normal teenager. On her personal life she has been pretty good except from the pole dancing and the photo shoot. I considered that minor compared to others. At least she is not partying wildly, not getting drunk and not doing drugs considering she has been a celebrity at an early age. Time will tell what she does with her life. I think she will be fine because she has good family support and foundation.

You can never compare Carrie to Miley not for a million years. They are totally different persons, have different values and upbringing. I found most of Allison`s blog about Carrie has some kind of negativity one way or another. The only comparison about the two videos is they are both playing a character but that`s it. We know Cowboy Casanova was done in a classy way and the video is appropriate for all ages.

Sugarcoat it all you want but Cowboy Cassanova is a video about a house of prostitution. Carrie also supports borderline pornography, so it’s all good. She’s really no different than Miley.

Duh….Carrie Underwood is the lady gaga of country! “Lady GooGoo”. It’s a combination of Lady GaGa only with GooGoo, which stands for Grand Ole Opry. According to internet reports anyway. I think it fits.

first off, i cant stand country. all the songs are about the same stuff, loosing some person to someone else or singing about their tractor or getting some woman drunk in order for her clothes to fall off etc!??! yes allot of talent there i must say. it takes allot of talent to think up such lyrics. not to mention all the class and respect that comes with music such as this. now since i said i hate country im sure some of you will be asking yourself how i know about some of this garbage, well its because some of my friends are country lovers and when hanging out with them i have no choice but to listen to all the broken records they want to call “music”. as far as Miley goes, she was not half naked in this vide and any one( “K” ) that said she is, must not see very clearly because she has clothes on. the black outfit and the other outfit looks just like a bathing suite. yes indeed she is very naked right!? LOL! put some glasses on sweetheart. why is everyone having a hissy fit about this video and the dancing in it. its a video ppl that goes along with the song. get over your narrow minded stupidity! lord have mercy the young woman has breasts we never knew that right because young women that once were on Disney dont develop right, they just stay little girls forever. haha! what a joke! she is trying something out that maybe she needed to get out of her system or something she has always wanted to do and could not just yet till her contract with Disney was over. what does everyone expect, for this young woman to sing Disney songs forever? yes at 30 she is going to keep being hanna montanna right?! LOL! that makes so much sense. her comment on pop, maybe at the time she didnt like nor want anything to do with pop. maybe now she has changed her mind or maybe she wants to try something new and wont even like it who knows. let her explore let her come into her own without all this negativity and lashing out at her. some of you are portraying to be Christians it seems yet you are putting her down. how is this Christ like? do tell me please because from what i know of the Bible and what Jesus taught us is that we pray of others and we dont judge nor point the finger because we always have 3 pointing back at us. its not our place to judge nor say if this young woman is a slut or not a Christian. only God knows her heart and if you truly were a Christian then pray for her instead of putting her down. do not have the audacity to call yourself a Christian and walk around as such yet gossip and point the fingers and judge. what it sounds like is that some of you are hypocrites and need to do some soul searching and talking with God. Miley looked good in this video and she seemed very comfortable and not as if she was forced at all. Please( “K” ), stop trying to read her and act as if you know something about psychology and major in such a department because you have no clue how to. and if you are a major in that then you need to pick a different profession. leave that to me who is a psychologist. more power to Ms Cyrus and i pray she goes further then she has already and i hope she can keep her sexy yet classy side to her and not turn out like the rest.

I think you have a very big misconception of country music

It’s not as you put it “all the songs are about the same stuff, loosing some person to someone else or singing about their tractor or getting some woman drunk in order for her clothes to fall off etc!??!”
