Sons of Sylvia Have a Friend in Carrie Underwood

Posted: April 29th, 2010 at 3:55 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Just in time for Mother's Day, thanks to Wednesday night's (April 28) American Idol, the world gets to celebrate a band that has given their mother the greatest gift of all time. They put her name in their band name. How great is that? Sons of Sylvia is made up of brothers Ashley, Austin and Adam Clark -- the sons of Sylvia Clark, a woman who gave birth not only to those three boys but eight other kids, as well. Two sets of twins, even. (I am sitting here trying to imagine a day when Ryan Seacrest introduces Kids of Alison, and it's very weird. But Sons of Sylvia has a much nicer ring to it.) Anyway, they all sing, plus Adam plays mandolin and guitar, Ashley plays guitar and fiddle, and Austin plays Dobro and lap steel. The Sons were raised in a family that did a lot of revival crusades and played all kinds of bluegrass and country gospel music. And Carrie Underwood was there Wednesday night to introduce them as "three guys who mean a lot to me," adding, "I'm such a fan." They are one of her opening acts on tour this summer. Are they country enough? How would you define their sound?

Sons of Sylvia are so talented they should get every break out there to get their sound known - their album Revelation is amazing even though I’m old country and bluegrass but their album which is country rock alternative rock made me sit up and pay attention to their music ,who cares what they are, they play dobro, mandolin , guitar and fiddle- they are creative as heck - I love the duet What Can I Say with SOS that is on Carrie’s Play ON album - watch out for them - go listen to the clips for Revelation on ITunes and see what you think

I really like SOS! They have a great unique sound! They do a little bluegrass in concert so I would say they are a blend of country and rock.

They are kind of alt rock meets country meets pop. Love them.

Talk about exposing country music to the rest of the world. Nobody does it more or bigger than the reigning ACM EOTY. I believe SOS’s performance on AI would not have happened had it not been for Carrie’s connection to AI. AI loves Carrie and Carrie loves AI. She is definitely providing SOS the big break many new artists look for..and few are lucky to find.

It only took last night’s performance for my to also be a fan of Sons of Sylvia, and that was the first time I had heard of them. Incredible!!

I heard them open for Carrie, they got the crowd going, then Craig Morgan was great, then Carrie was fantastic and she did bring SOS back for the duet and that sold me. I think they could choose, but think they will not choose country, rock “a” billy, maybe-but I will buy their cd. Greatest concert I have seen or heard in a long time, great mixture.

I had never heard of Sons of Sylvia until I saw them on American Idol. I only heard the one song they performed but it was enough to have me go out and buy their debut cd.I really loved their sound.

Ashley Clark was Carrie’s first road Violinist and once he offered her flowers on bended knee.that was in 2005.He was with her till he left with his brothers on next Great American Band and won. This was not his first time on AI and he also went to Africa with Carrie he also did “Don’t Forget to Remember Me”Violin Solo spot and “Last Name”Violin solo spost in “Wasted’ on AI.

It was his first time as a solo act (SOS). The other times he appeared on idol was as a member of Carrie’s band.

Kate - Actually, they performed as “The Clark Brothers” and sang “This Little Light of Mine” on AI a couple of years back (just after they won “Next Great American Band”).

I listened the song that they performed on AI ‘Love left to lose’ for several times and tried to listen for their other songs at their official website ie. John Wayne and Reveletion.. gosh I love their music, I consider myself as their fan now. I read somewhere that they are cousins of Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic and Love left to lose was written by Ashley and Ryan.

Glad that Carrie support them, and salute to Ms Carrie Underwood for always reach out hand and helping to introduce young and talented musicians to the world. First she brought Orianthy at Grammys and now SoS. SoS performance at AI was great and I have just seen their rank for Album at ITunes is No.1 for pop genre and No.3 for all genres WOW !!. But what puzzling me is why they entered in pop genre instead of country as it obviously that they use country music instruments like mandolin, fiddle, banjo and dubro.

I wouldn’t consider them “country”. I heard a litt bit of a rockers voice and I was dissappointed in their performance…almost made me not want to drive a few hours to go see carrie’s concert, but I love her, so I’m going.

Christina - their older stuff is more of a bluegrass/rock/contemporary country mix. This was a straight rock song using a four four drum beat. I’m hopint the rest of their music is more like their older stuff. Their version of “This Little Light of Mine” is incredible.

Christina, I would hope the opening act wouldn’t keep you from going to see Carrie. You can always go in late but to pass up an opportunity to see Carrie sing live, especially when she’s not coming near where I live and I would love to go….wow!!!!
