Merle Haggard Hates His Own "Back in Love by Monday"

Merle HaggardSince Merle Haggard has a new album out, I Am What I Am, he's all over the place. And in this interview on NPR, he has a lot to say about where he's been. Haggard has never been one to shy away from speaking his mind, so it's a very candid interview. On songs of his own that he hates: "I absolutely hate that song ['If We're Not Back in Love by Monday']. I can't stand to hear it. It makes me want to regurgitate." On his fight with lung cancer: "I've survived, and I don't have anything left in my body that I know of." On President Obama: "I still want him to succeed, but I don't know that he's gonna be able to do that." And on his rough childhood and adolescent years: "I rode a freight from Oregon back to Bakersfield -- that's over a bunch of mountains. It was wintertime -- there was snow and there was ice and two others hobos and me crammed down into an ice compartment of an old refrigerator car, looking at each other with nothing to say." I wonder what those two other hobos would have to say now, knowing they'd been riding with a future legend.

saw Merle on Ralph Emery the other day and when asked what he thought of the direction of today’s country he just pointed straight down. I think they meant what you here on top 40 radio these days.

I disagree with him all all fronts. I love ‘If We’re Not Back in Love by Monday’ and I don’t mind the direction of today’s pop country music industry. If you prefer a different direction, roots country exist to push down a different road. Why is it so hard for them to co-exist in the same Universe? They aren’t even in the same town.

I follow the pop country industry, but I also play around listening to roots artists and other “unheard” artists. That’s like saying I can only listen to country music and won’t listen to R&B. Just as different genres have something different to offer musically, different industries also have something different to offer.

Yeah but, you’re “Robin, The Board Blunder” too, so what difference does it make? You have no credibility in the first place. HAHAHA…woot woot!

I love Merle here is a quote from him from his dvd from 2004.
If the music I make ever becomes mainstream I’ll just have to move off center so it isn’t mainstream. As far as him not liking ” If weren’t not back in love by monday” that is his choice and I see nothing wrong with it. As for me I love the song.

Swilly - you proove with every post you make that you have absolutely nothing to offer on the “opinion” front. So, as with others that have offer, you try to transpose your own lack of thought onto others. So, with your “lack of thought”, I take your actual posts with a grain of salt. You try to be RedMaz, but problem is, as much as I disagree with RedMaz, at least he/she has actual thought and opinion to offer you have absolutely NOTHING to offer a conversation.
