Kelly Clarkson Wants to Cry, Keith Urban Style
If you are touring in New Zealand, no matter what genre you are in, I think it's a good idea (or a great idea, even) to cover a Keith Urban song. Especially if you are Kelly Clarkson and have the vocal chops to really make it your own. That's what she did with his "Tonight I Wanna Cry" when she was in Auckland. Backed by a sparse piano and acoustic guitar, she sat on a stool and belted out that sad, sad break-up song. She does especially well on lines like, "To hell with my pride/Let it fall like rain from my eyes" and "I'll never get over you by hiding this way." Even without Urban on the piano, the song stills gives me goose bumps.

I think Kelly did a good job, but her version cannot compete with Keith’s version. Nobody puts more passion and soul in this song or any song than Keith Urban!

I’m sure Kelly did a fantastic cover of Keith’s song..but why is CMT covering Kelly Clarkson? Maybe I’ve misunderstood this site to be a country site which I guess it isn’t. Just saying.

Kate: One article about a pop star singing a Keith Urban song doesn’t mean CMT has abandoned country. If nothing else, it shows how great songs are noticed regardless of genre.

Being the huge KU fan that I am, I enjoy his version better, but I must say she did a wonderful version too. She has a lovely voice, and gave the song a lot of passion. Just by her covering this song in concert is good publicity for Keith. Opens his music up to a whole new crowd, so good for her.

I’m a huge Kelly Clarkson fan and one thing I appreciate about her is how she genuinely loves all kinds of music and is constantly exposing us fans to wonderful songs by other artists. She is also passionate about the artists that she loves, and it rubs off on her fans too. Droves of us are Patty Griffin fans thanks to Kelly covering her songs. And I had never heard of this song of Keith’s until Kelly covered it, and now I love it, so the exposure does work. But no, I don’t think Kelly is ready to go country any time soon, LOL…

When I heard Kelly sing this song, I couldn’t believe my ears. She is such a gifted artist and can sing to any genre of music. She sings this beautiful cover with such emotion. I love many things about Kelly, but one in particular is that she recommends to her fans different artists no matter the genre. She’s just outstanding.

Love both Urban’s and Clarkson’s versions. Clarkson’s soaring, vulnerable voice does Urban’s heartfelt lyrics justice.
