In Carrie Underwood's Own Words

Posted: March 26th, 2010 at 5:38 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

I know I say this every time another Carrie Underwood cover story hits the newsstands. But this time, I swear she is opening up like never before. This story in Allure magazine really gets to the heart of who Underwood is and who she is not. Like when she talks about how she'd gladly go back on American Idol even though she's not contractually obligated to do so. "Of course, I will, because I'm not a little snot, you know?" she said.

And then there's that rock from jeweler Johnathon Arndt she's been wearing since Mike Fisher popped the question. I'm sure she adores the diamond engagement ring, but she told Allure, "He could have put a twisty-tie on my finger and that would have worked." Maybe she feels that way because she admits she's "not a mushy person." She did say, though, that a happy relationship has led to happy songs, more so than on her first two albums. "I've never really done a love song, I realized, until this album. ... I don't do feelings," she said.

Other sage Underwoodisms:

"But sometimes I guess God has really opposite plans of whatever you have."

"I think if anybody in my position felt like they deserved it, there'd be something wrong with them."

"I'm, like, Carrie in my sweatpants. But 'Carrie Underwood' is a person who can, you know, wear all the fishnets and the corsets*."

* And, it should be noted, faux bangs. Those are mini hair extensions she wore for the Allure photo shoot.

Carrie also brought me to country music. I have always liked Faith, Martina, and Shania, but because of Carrie I started listening to country radio and now have a lot of CD’s from many country artists. She is a beautiful person inside and out. Thank you, Carrie.

I think she gloats a little too much about her relationship. I’ve seen it time and time again with celebrities like her (women in particular) they get a relationship and then brag about how great and perfect the guy is and then when it doesn’t work out (which in gloating cases like these, a lot of time it doesn’t) they woman looks silly. We get it Carrie you’re in love and engaged now just keep that part of your life private. The hockey jersey at a concert is just over the top, we know you’ve landed a man. LOL

Growup - people that are bothered by something like this generally are lacking in their own lives and feel it necessary to spread their cynicism. Other people’s happiness rubs them the wrong way. There is a simple resolution to your problem. When you see an interview w/Carrie, don’t read or watch it.

If i could tell you how many times ive seen performers wear the jersey of the hockey team that is home to the arena. Its not just a Carrie thing, and she only did it in her fiance’s arena. I would say thats too over the top. Think about the collection of jerseys you could have! Lol. Those things are expensive!

Hey, we all like to be loved. And she deserves this. I really do wish them luck, and hope that they find a beautiful life together.

    Rock on Carrie!

I am really happy for Carrie. She also brought me to country music. Now I know a lot of country music artistst and some I like but Carrie is my favourite ever. Her songs touch or impact your life in some ways. She remains true to herself and a real ambassador to country music. I cant wait to see her amazing concert. Way to go Carrie.
Growup- anybody who is happy with their relationship likes to express their feelings and I bet you are the same. She starts to open up a bit now but she is still very private. Wearing the hockey jersey is a wonderful gesture for her fiancee on his hometown and her fans expect it. You dont like it well … she cant please everybody. As a fan I love it and what matter the most is to please her fans and fiancee!

As for wearing her fiances Hockey Jersey -in her concerts she has worn the hometown teams Jersey of some sport when doing the last song of the night which was Before He Cheats then, now she closes with a different song I believe - I will find out - going to her concert next week

Oh well Amy just dont listen to her; we all have bad habits. I bet you have a few. But it`s just so easy to point out somebody else`s bad habits than noticing and working on yours. I guess it`s human nature. You probably dont like her either because her little weakness bugs you but if you like somebody you tend to be more accepting and tolerant otherwise you will be alone in this world if you cant tolerate little bad habits from people around you.

  • Amy says:

    Posted: March 27th, 2010 at 11:16 am

Yes it’s very easy to point out someones bad habits. She is a celebrity and a public figure I’m not, I don’t, or don’t have to talk in front of people if I don’t want to. Carrie does, it’s part of her job. She should learn basic speech patterns instead of sounding like some hick on the local TV station describing the tornado. “Um…like it sounded like uh a dang train or something and uh omg!”

Carrie brought me to country music and now I love many artist, but she is my favorite, lol, you probably would not like me, but I use pharses(same Ones) when I can’t put it all together when I feel bad about something, or just plain speaking. Carrie is educated and knows exactly why she does, probably the converation is boring, and she will not say so. Talk to 20 people a day about same subject, and I would really probably say it then.

    Posted: March 27th, 2010 at 12:01 pm

Oh Amy that little habit can be overlooked by her other talents; we focus on her good talents and positive things about her not on her bad habits. Just because they are celebrities and in the public eye dont mean that they are perfect. All celebrities have bad habits probably including your fav artists. At least her little habit is not as worse as others. Even speakers have annoying habits on the way they present themselves or the way they speak; just the way it is. Since it really bothered you then tune her off and move on. Just like I do when an artist I dont like comes on in radio I turn off the radio and find something else to listen to.It`s just a little thing; dont let it ruin your day.lol. I like her and I overlooked that weakness of her because she brought some joy into my life with her music and how a good role model she is to all ages and how she remains grounded inspite of fame and money. She always looks back on her humble beginning. So her little habits is just a minor flaw.Let`s PLAY ON!

Amy, you need to really listen to her her . Yes she is a very shy person. I feel that Carrie Underwood is NOT full of self like some other artists. I will not mention them everyone knows who she/he is.
How many current country artist are college graduates in journalism and mass communications. the girl (Carrie) is very intelligent and very quiet and very very shy . Carrie deserves all the respect that she has earned and do not forget that Carrie Underwood is the best thing to country music and any music genre today . she a fantastic writer that she is a out this world vocalist a fantastic entertainer and do forth.

Amy, by the way she is a very funny gal.I had to put that in. any singer today wish they had half the intelligence, half of her vocals and so forth she is the best entertainer period.

Hey Amy are you talking about Kellie Pickler talking like a hick? Carrie has perfect speech and is very educated, and humble. She doesn’t brag about her Home being a mansion, like Pickler does either. She better start selling more albums…oh I forgot Taylor gave her break letting her tour with her. It’s a good thing, because you know the say “The poorhouse is right right around the corner”…so don’t brag too much!!!!

Some people don’t have anything better to do than tear others down. It’s sad, really. Carrie is an extremely talented and beautiful woman- what she does in her private life should stay between her and her friends and family.

Carrie is a great role model for all people, and she’s very intelligent. She graduated top of her high school class, and is the only Idol winner who has finished college.

Carrie isn’t the best public speaker, but neither are a lot of other artists. Taylor Swift, anyone? I would rather support someone like her than the artists who dance on poles and sing (and act) liike sexual objects 24/7. So many stars sing about drugs, do drugs, and don’t have any idea of what good morals are. Carrie does.

It’s funny to me that bashers know they can’t criticize Carrie’s talent, so they stoop even lower and insult her for something that has nothing to do with what she does for a living.

As for the jersey, who cares? Carrie showed subtle support for Mike, as he did by bringing his friends and relatives to the show. Carrie remained a proffesional throughout the show, which has to be nerve-racking when your fiancee and most of his family and friends are watching you. Carrie appears to be in a great place in her life, and I think the fact that she’s able to open up about her relationship despite the fact that she’s so shy says a lot. Carrie is very famous, and she’s entering the biggest phase of her life; she can’t avoid questions entirely. The talk will die down eventually, and I doubt the public will hear them speak of each other. It’s not as if DJ’s will be asking how married life is.

If you want to pick on Carrie, pick on her for her talent, not personal life.

Carrie is really down to earth and humble - not something generally seen with someone that has that kind of talent!
She is absolutely stunning in person, but she’s only 5′3?! She seems much taller, aha.
As for the jersey..I am an Ottawa Senators fan and obviously a Carrie fan - so if we love her, and the Senators, putting the two together is even better!
Mike is loved in Ottawa because he is a great player, and he plays a huge role in the community, giving to charities in both time and money. He has strong morals - and genuinely cares about doing things like that, not just because he’s in the public eye.
I really hope this relationship lasts, they have the same values, and they seem to love each other a lot! (Before she did Mama’s Song she said: “I love Mike Fisher” - generating a huge cheer from the crowd lol)
    Go Carrie!
    and Go Sens Go! ;)

Garth Brooks brought me to country. Toby Keith is a favorite of mine and then came Carrie. I think her voice is incredible. I read the articles about her because I just think she’s wonderful. Those three artists have introduced me to more of country and they will always be my favorites. It surprises me how cruel people can be and it takes away from the artists they support but Carrie has the voice to carry her through any mean remarks. I really like how she can actually carry a tune and sound great on her CD’s and just as great live. Play On Carrie!

Oh Amy you`re so jealous of Carrie and felt threatened by her popularity and talent. Well she is talented and she can sing live; you should read one of the reviewers in Massachussets where he said Carrie is the exception of all the singers out there because most singers use autotune and electronic instruments to sound better but Carrie sounds better live than her album. So true and you`re very jealous. You dont have to be because your fav artist too is famous so enjoy her success as we enjoy Carrie. Play ON.

Cassie - I guess “All American Girl” is kind of a love song to her dad. But, I think she was referring to the boy girl thing. :)

She has had so called boy/girl love songs too, but they aren’t very happy love songs and I think she’s talking about the “I’m happy and in love” songs.

    Some Hearts

    “Wasted” - not too happy
“The Night Before (Life Goes On)” - kind of sad (moving on kind of thing)
“Before He Cheats” I suppose is a love song of sorts, but definitely not a happy one :)
“Starts With Goodbye” - sad (again about moving on from a relationship)
“I just Can’t Live a Lie” - while she’s trying to “get back together”, there’s reasons they shouldn’t be in this song.

    Carnival Ride
“Flat On the Floor” - love gone wrong
“Just a Dream” - life’s big love snuffed out in it’s prime (not happy)
“I Know You Won’t” - Not a happy love song
“Last Name” - See comment for “Before He Cheats”
“You Won’t Find This” - not a happy love song (love done with)
“I Told You So” - not a happy love song
“The More Boys I Meet” - not a happy love song

    But, “Play On” has:

“Quitter”, “Mamma’s Song” (really about boy/girl love), and “Unappologize”.

Well, I think there’s a difference between love songs and songs about love. The songs Robin posted, I think, are more songs about love. To me, love songs are more like Martina McBride’s “Valentine” and maybe Carrie’s “Look At Me” cover. “Mama’s Song” could be considered a love song, too, but in a different way.
