Toby Keith Asked the Big Question 10 Years Ago

Posted: March 19th, 2010 at 10:43 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Ten years ago this week, Toby Keith's "How Do You Like Me Now?!" was at the top of the Billboard country airplay chart for the first of five weeks. So I thought I'd celebrate that anniversary by pulling out the old video, just like I've been doing every Friday with other vintage videos. This has always been such a favorite of mine because, let's face it, who doesn't have someone from their high school that they'd like to say this to? In Keith's case, it's the bitchy cheerleader and valedictorian who acted like she was way out of his league. Twenty years after graduation, he invites her back to the football field to ask her, now that he is a famous country singer, who got the better deal in the cruel and funny world. I don't know if a girl like this really existed in Keith's life back in Oklahoma, because I think he actually was a football player in high school and hardly the guitar-slinging dork the video makes him out to be. But if there was such a girl, I'm sure she's wishing she'd been a little nicer to him back then.

Love Toby Keith. How cool that his video’s from ten years ago have stood the test of time. ‘How Do You Like Me Now’ definitely a catch phrase. ‘Who’s Your Daddy’ is still big today. There may be more. Toby is awesome!!!!

LOVE TOBY KEITH AND HIS MUSIC. You can say all the nasty things you want about him, but his fans will always stand behind him and support him. He is an icon in country music and stays country, no pop crossover. It is easy to crossover genres and become that very popular singer so kudos to Toby for sticking to country!! So looking forward to another decade of fine music, great concerts and maybe a movie or two.

Yes Ann, no pop crossovers for Toby. Course, no roots crossover, either. He’s pop country all the way. Pop country is the the only country format that plays his music. So I guess the only place he’s really an icon, is to pop country fans.

Enjoy and stand behind him, but please understand, some of us who listen to ALL country formats, don’t see anything special about him or his music. That’s just the way it is when you expand your listening to what the rest of country music has to offer, instead of relying on commercial radio to supply you with the few artists they promote.

To brett, have you heard any new music from country artists like James Hand, Dale Watson, Wayne Hancock, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Guy Clark, or Wiley Gustfson, to make that kind of comparison?

Yuck she was smart not to pay him any attention. He throws a fit just like a little kid when he isn’t given enough attention. Everytime he opens up his mouth nothing but stupidity comes out of it.
