Miley Cyrus Calls Country Music "Contrived"
Miley Cyrus has some choice words to say about country music in a new Parade magazine interview. On the topic of why she's staying away from the country music scene, she says, "It scares me, that's why. It feels contrived on so many levels. Unless you're wearing a cowboy hat and cowboy boots and singing and whining about your girlfriend or boyfriend leaving you it's not going to sell. I think that's why my dad finally got out of it. You have to wear those cowboy boots and be sweet as pie. It makes me nervous, the politics of it all." In the interview, she praises Dolly Parton (as well as RuPaul and Lady Gaga) but says she struggles with relating to teen girls because she doesn't watch television. Considering her career up to this point, it's hard to fathom that she'd have anything negative to say about country music, teenage girls and television audiences, especially all at the same time, but read the interview and see for yourself.

Netteo says:
WOW - just WOW. The upside is that we won’t be subjected to Miley and BR at the CMT Awards shows anymore.
PitStop1938 says:
Good … (Some of) Us long-time fans of country music will NOT miss the fact that you’re not here … Please don’t change your mind …
Lauren says:
She needs to stop talking. She isn’t a good enough singer to relate to any genre of music. And she cant relate to girls? How did she manage Hannah Montana? The world isn’t out to get you Miley! Stop acting like you are so much better than everything!! Im so sick of her.
ISU_Fan says:
Good Miley can’t sing anyway so she can stay in “pop”! but also why bash country music its because of country that her dad got famous, and she was handed Hannah Montana!! News Flash if country music didn’t make her dad famous we wouldn’t even know who Miley is!! which actually would have been a good thing she is WAY Over Rated!!!
Bethany says:
I really try to like Miley. But her latest comments in interviews makes me really worry about her. She acts like people are always out to get her and its all about her. I find it strange that her Dad became famous off country music… the only reason she is even remotely famous. I feel like with all of these comments she will be losing a lot of respect. I can see a pattern familiar to Britney Spears here, for many reasons. I hope Miley gets her act together before she shaves her head.
Bethany says:
oh and i totally agree with you Lauren.
Bill Purcell says:
I admire her courage to speak her mind, she’s not country, don’t fake it, good career move? no-way.
Gone1966 says:
She has jumped the shark. Her Dad got out of country music because no one wanted to listen to him anymore. He was basically a one hit wonder. Now, she wants to put down the music that made her and her family. Lady GaGa, now there is a role model.
Liz says:
That girl doesn’t know the first thing about country music. It’s not ‘contrived’, it’s so much more real than any other music out there. And I don’t see Carrie Underwood wearing cowboy boots on stage, and on that matter I’ve never heard Miley hold a note like Carrie can.
Amika says:
She’s not courageous, I think she’s mildly retarded. She acts very strange, clips of her in her new movie where she’s trying to be sexy are odd, her body movements look like she’s got poor motor skills. I don’t think she has staying power in any genre of music and she certainly cannot act.
Taylor says:
It’s a PR stunt; she wants attention. I hate that I know the lyrics to Party in the USA (I know, I know…) but she talks all about how she’s so uncomfortable in LA and how she wishes she were back in Nashville and wearing her kicks. She’s awfully contradictory now. Good riddance! She never belonged in country anyway!
ME says:
How is this horseface looking girl famous again? Most people don’t even like her. She even gets called out by people in her own industry. I know Radiohead hates her, Jamie Foxx hater her. Even that tween Justin Bieber hates her. You know its bad when you get called out by Justin Bieber. These Disney kids are so talentless. Their 15 minutes of fame will be up in a couple of years. And seeing as how ungrateful this girl is, she deserves it.
Derrik says:
Wow i don’t even know what to think of that statement by her. She is just unbelieveable. Hey if she wants to dance around a stripper pole on awards show and convey that message to her fans go right ahead. If parents want her as a role model then they need a wake up call. She doesen’t have any right to say that about country music because she knows nothing about it and doesen’t listen to it so she has no idea what country music is. I had to refrain myslf from laughing when reading this. Its just so incorrect in so many ways but what do you expect from her anyway. Country music is real music and the music of the people and its in no way contrived.
teddy finerty says:
keep your ass on the disney channel little girl
JD says:
I steer clear of Miley Cyrus and country radio should ban her! She isn’t talented enough for country music an she herself is contrived with her fake name and act. She likes Lady Gaga who is very contrived. Country is real, pop is contrived.
cindy says:
I do believe that she’s going down Britney’s path. I do
believe with fame and money she think she’s hot to trot
cos she has some influence due to kids watching her show.
I don’t know why but it does seem like the teen generation
is trying to grow up so quickly and feel like they know and experienced it all…WRONG. They think they know and are invincible but they have no idea…Plus i do not think
she’s country material, pop maybe. Country, shucks NO!
Larz Blackman says:
Miley Cyrus is what’s contrived! I’m not interested in defending Country, but it’s a bit maddening that the latest laboratory-engineered pop star is calling anything contrived.
Kimberly says:
If i ever see her at the CMA, ACM, or any rodeo concert…I will ask for an autograph. Then burn it and slap her face. Maybe that will teach her to shut her mouth and my ears will stop bleeding.
John says:
I hate to inform little miss priss, about 95% of those folks in boots and hats are more talented than she will ever be. She doesn’t have the talent for country. Fancy clothes and lights might impress 10 year olds, but real fans need more substance. Stick to being a Disney creation, and leave real artist alone. Say hi to mickey, goofy, billy ray, dopey and gaga.
Zeb says:
Her career can now rest in peace, right next to her fathers.
What Now says:
thank the lord we never have to listen to her or her freaky father on CMT again.
Straitfan says:
Hey if we can except idiots like the dixie chicks who are horribly anti-american why wouldn’t we except someone like miley cyrus? her dad sang one song that was wildly popular and didn’t have one as good as that. I don’t mean to be cruel, but miley was not meant for country music. if pop wants her pop can have her.
patrick says:
now if we can only get taylor swift to do the same thing, country music can return to actual country music
Kim says:
This Disney pop tart isn’t talented enough to be a “fly on the wall” in country and I change the station every time they play her songs. I wonder what Dolly thinks about her dumb comments and are her songs contrived? Hell no! Many country artists don’t wear cowboy hats but Miley would need to wear one just to try to convince people she’s country (she ain’t).
kim says:
i understand what miley is saying but she needs to chose her words more carfully.
florencia says:
Thank you really country music aint needing her come on she dosent even hear country cause it aint all love songs theres other things theres life issues. Or the song I wonder by Kellie Pickler is about couple love, Live like you were dying by Tim McGraw or I dont get Inglish very well or it talks about living your life not love. Come on Miley just scoop of and leave the experts and the people that fell country in their bloods that dont care if there called Rednecks cause there proud of it. Stay with you Hannah Montana thing that wont last long.
T Scott says:
Lets face it if her name was not Cyrus she wouldn’t have
a singing career because she is just not that good of a
singer. Her dad hasn’t had much of a career either because
he isn’t that good and nobody likes a mullet, that’s why
he is trying to look like Keith Urban and we all know that
isn’t working either.
The truth is they both plain suck.
Peacock Queen says:
***
Looks as though the bashing of country music by “pop” stars looking to distance themselves from “country music” and Taylor Swift’s success has started. I hate to say “I told you so” but I did.
my opinion says:
I actually agree with her. That is the stereotype of country music; being a sweet princess and singing about relationships. You all bash her and you all say the same thing about Taylor Swift. Country music is about fitting into an image and it IS political. Do you all not remember how crazy you all went on the Dixie Chicks for saying that thing about Bush and now everyone says it with no shame?
She has a point. So what if she’s a Disney star, she does have an opinion and just because she isn’t a goodie two shoes princess like Taylor Swift who still talks about princesses and fairytales and acts 15 when she’s really 20 everyone wants to come down on her. She isn’t the best singer in the world, I agree, but that doesn’t make her statements any less true. Even Kelly Clarkson has spoken out about the politics of the music industry. You might now like her or her music but let’s not act like she’s wrong when Taylor Swift can win album of the year over a better vocalists like Beyonce and Lady Gaga. Half of Taylor’s success is her princess cute image and that is the truth.
Miley is right. Country music is very much about politics.
Tasha says:
its not just about cowboy boots and all that. its just like singing hip hop or something just in different words and beats. if you listen to a lot of these country songs there not all about love and all that, most of it is about life and how it will treat you like about all these other songs that are rap or hip-hop and there not all about love and all that kind of stuff its about life and other things. if you want to sing country music then there should be nothing to be scared of. I’m a true country girl myself and i listen to all kind of music and its not all about love and girlfriends/boyfriends and how they left each other its about other things. You just have to think and come up with different kind of songs.
jax1x says:
Miley Cyrus isn’t talented enough calling anything contrived. radio stations should ban her. she can’t sing so nobody will miss her.
Cassie says:
I think you’re all being a bit harsh. She wasn’t bashing a particular person she was just saying that if you don’t fit into a specific image it’s hard to sell. That’s kind if true whenever women act to sexy or men act too rich or anyone says anything anti-religious or anti-American they do get attacked. And she did say sell not be good. She’s referring to the country that makes money and she’s kind of right. Of course there’s a bunch of country that’s good that doesn’t sell. I think that was more her point.
Alex says:
she’s smashing idols (and fanbases?)
A very bold move, and as long as she has the chops (music or acting, be it as it may), she can stick the landing, and wind up bigger than any Taylor Swift. Genre busting is always met with trepidation, but one trick ponies get boring fast. (No offense meant to Taylor Swift, who still has a shot at moving beyond her admittedly simplistic premise. Perhaps an album about being famous and giving up a normal life to be a superstar?)
Anyway, Miley never appears careful with her words, which is just to say that she probably chooses controversial topics on purpose, because they makes for a better headline. She is a lot smarter than you think. She has the role of the bratty, speaks-her-mind teen down to a tee, and has people hanging on her every word. She uses it to get people to see her movies, buy her music, and not forget when she is on the in between.
And she is also making sure no one thinks she has aspirations as a country star, lest she be judged as if she did. It is subtle, but brilliant. Disney definitely gives its girls Marketing 101.
Redmaz says:
By definition Pop Culture including Pop Country(which is directly what she’s talking about) is contrived. She’s absolutely right. Her fathers whole career was contrived by the Pop industry. She’s been around it all her life and she knows just as well as anyone how it works. She’s milked the system for all it was worth(maybe a payback scheme and vengence for her Dad). She played the Pop industry and it’s fans for all they were worth, and now she’s trashing it. I say more power to her. Straitfan and patrick, you don’t know enough about music to make those statements.
jo says:
hmm. let’s see. she’ll issue an apology pretty soon. clean that business up and be right back to being what she is. i’m sure her handlers are doing damage control right now. she’ll probably even do a country song next!
fluffy says:
I am not a fan of miley’s ,I do like her song -the climb, the reason I personally don’t like her is more about her attitude and how she acts , she tries to act all grown -up , even when she was alot younger , I guess growing up in the lime lite can have alot to do wwith it , her parents should have watched out for her better, she need sto act her age , as far as her bashing country music , this stuff these days being called country music stinks , the days of real country music are long gone, for the record I don’t like carrie either , talk about having a singing career handed to one , if it wasn’t for idol , nobody would know of carrie , same for kellie pickler, but if she don’t like it , don’t have anyhting to do with it
M says:
IT IS JUST AS WELL, SHE COULD BRING COUNTRY MUSIC DOWN! STAY IN POP, ITS WHERE SHE BELONGS, COUNTRY MUISC ISNT HER STRENGTH.
bp fan says:
Thank God and Greyhound, shes gone. Good riddance.
Jeff Remz of Country Standard Time says:
the response above is predictable of course because she disses the music these folks like. She’s saying she can’t relate to it which is fair. Of course,s he wasn’t all that country to begin with. There’s a post at the Roots, Toots n’ Hoots blog about this also at the country standard time web site.
solongsowrong says:
Wow fluffy. I think you’re doing a pretty good job of bashing Country music yourself. This stuff these days being called country music stinks? The days of real country music are long gone? What up with that?
Are you talking about Pop Country, or Roots Country? The real Country I listen to is far from gone. In fact, the Country music I listen to is pretty good stuff. It’s far from this contrived stuff you hear on commercial radio.
If you feel this strongly about the Country music you hear, maybe it’s time you find some different Country genres to listen to.
Benny says:
You know I’m not defending Miley or anything but this is her opinion and I can’t say much about it. Except that she does have a point about the Politics but thats what I bet most country lovers love about it. It tells the truth. Country music speaks about not only relationships but the truth. I love country music because it’s deeper in it’s genre than pop. And not to be rude, but how does she not relate to teenage girls ? Plz she’s one for god sakes ! She’s dated boys. She knows how it is to get all dressed up, get your heartbroken and stuff. I mean come on her album “Breakout” even heartbreak songs which she even co-wrote herself. Just because you don’t watch “television” don’t mean you don’t go through having experiences. TV has nothing to do to relating to real life unless it’s a rela life based tv show or movie then that’s a different story. And excuse me but what’s up with the whining ? Plz, this coming from the girl who kept tweeting her ex Justin about being lonely and sad. I mean come on. Really Miley ?? And you know country music isn’t always about wearing a cowboy hat or boots. It’s about the music, the lyrics, the experience it’s coming from that many can relate to. I bet she even whined about Nick or Justin leaving her once. I mean, I bet some people have whined but so wat ? It’s okay, your sad because he or/she left you and your heartbroken. It’s okay, go through it and get over it in your own time. And how does not music about being heartbroken not sell ?? It does because it helps the listener know he/or she aren’t the only ones who’ve gone through this. Miley needs to be careful about what she says. If she doesn’t like Country music. Fine by me. Atleast that’s one genre she won’t touch. But about the whining, I mean come on.
brett farve says:
thats just sad
Kyle Bird says:
ya know last time i checked Garth Brooks is thye best selling artist in history not miley cyrus or any other act for that matter and she has the nerve to knock country music
Ashley says:
theres no need to talk crap about miley’s father. but i agree she doesn’t know anything about country music. it’s far better then pop music and shes supposedly friends with taylor swift so shes technically dissing her and all of her other supposed friends who are in the country music business.
Anna says:
I swear.. The more and more this girl talks, the more I really think she is legit stupid.
Alli says:
O my goodness this girl is a loser! the onLy reason she talks bad about country music, is because its filled with almost everyone who knows how to sing, and who tells stories- they dOnt whine. If carrie sings about a boy who broke up with her she doesnt whine she rocks it and says how shes so over them! Who just wore cowboy boots in her one hit wonder song party in the U.S.A- that was miley hmmm. Like she sould really think about what shes saying before she says it- I think shes still to dumb to know whats going on around her! Geeze! I wonder if anyone has told her that shes a bad singer yet- b/c shes got another thing comin’! After her lil Hannah Montana show is done i’m pretty sure no 1 is going to see her! and then she’ll be wishing she didnt say anything- because she’ll try and crawl back into the country scene and no 1 will give her the time of day! and good! O miley get over the fact that you have no talent and Dont be jelous of people like Carrie underwood and Reba etc. b/c they probably have no idea who you are anyways! haha Well I know that country music is the BESTTTT!
joyce says:
This is at least the second time Miley has expressed her intent that she is not going to do country and she does not like it. It is find for her to have an opinion and I will remember that when she releases her country album ever when she changes her mine.
Nellie says:
I like country music, and I respect most music. I am not your typical “country music fan”. I do not fit the stereotype. But I appreciate it fully because of the fact that the best vocalists America has ever produced had their roots in country music. For example, Patsy Kline had one of the best female voices I have ever heard. She has not been, and will not be duplicated. This young lady (Miley) does not know what real music is, and needs a class in music appreciation before she opens her mouth to speak or sing again.
Taylor says:
Well, well, well. Isn’t this working in her favor? All of us true country lovin’ folks getting upset over some stupid, talentless, teenage pop star. But you know what when someone knocks the one thing that we all have a passion for we have a divine right to be angry. This is just the thing that makes me dislike this girl even more than I already did. She cannot sing nor can she act. Her video of the climb should not be allowed on CMT anymore. If she is going to bash country music are we really going to be ok with her being on CMT? And honestly, what isn’t political anymore? I’m mean c’mon have some respect for country music and the people that she probably idolizes. If she actually listened to the good country music, the stuff that I at least consider country, maybe she would change her tune. She needs to stay away from country music and all that is good in this world.
Connie says:
My opinion’s comments are correct. Miley has seen first hand how political country music is. I guess nobody remembers how mean they were to Billy Ray when he became famous. Travis Tritt bashed him daily. He was never accepted by the county music moguls. I don’t listen to country music radio because there is only a small number of artist played. Lots of country stars talk about it. Saw a interview with Trace Adkins stating that he rebelled and was not liked. Jamey Johnson has been quoted saying he can’t believe they are giving him any attention. Face it country music is very political but thank heavens for outlaws like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and others who helped lead they way for artist to sing their songs dispute the establishment fighting them all the way.
Jessica says:
I agree with her on the whining about a boyfriend or girlfriend. Most country artists DON’T do that but Taylor Swiftdoes and look how popular she is. Taylor is 20 and stil lsings about high school relationships and how she’s invisible to the guy she likes or how someone broke her heart. Wah.
Baizle says:
Well it’s too hard to say something bad about Miley Cyrus because there is nothing wrong with her…
Yes, I am being sarcastic.
John says:
REALLY!!! Need I say Zach Brown Band and Keeny Chesney and Tim Mcgraw….. I don’t hear whining in their music. She is way off base.
My question is why would you say that??? She just took a shot at parts of her own fan base (those that like country music and those who like her music) by using the “country music stereo-type”. You won’t see her hats on our website, Cowboy Hat Country.
Mike says:
Not like we really listened to her daddy anyway…Shes scared? Good!! People are always afraid of what they dont understand..keep her out of Nashville and play more Allison Moorer
dan says:
Country music has been contrived for decades now. I can’t think of one country song in the last five years that will be remembered 50 years from now. Miley, just like Taylor, started out as a manupulated marketing ploy . She has her 150 million dollar bank account, with that kind of wealth, comes some freedom from Disney and the ability to at last speak her mind.
wow says:
Come people,if you dont like her voice then shut it..i dont see you selling any albums.
I work with bands all the time on the road, and i get sick of idiots who think they know everything about music and how the industry works just from watching CMT or something… come on people grow up.
Matthew says:
This is the most stupid comment I have ever heard….no you don’t have to wear boots and a cowboy hat….is she kidding? Country Music today, is more “pop” than ever…thanks to Taylor Swift for RUINING Country Music.
natalie says:
u rox miley and i luv u ur voice is mde 4 contury and pop lvuv u
Famcsharon says:
I disagree with the statement that Carrie Underwood had her career handed to her. If you aren’t liked by fans then your music goes nowhere. Carrie is very well liked and has worked hard to learn the business. She may not have started out like everyone in little joints and bars but she’s out there working and having 10 number one hits off 2 albums and number 11 (so far) from her 3rd album is making good music that people relate to. Miley’s comments are her comments. I never considered her country music anyways.
janet says:
unfortunately, miley is correct. just listen to the song, murder on music row by alan jackson and george strait. it’s the almighty dollar that predicts what is played on country radio. there are a lot of REAL country music stars out there, but it’s hard to get their music heard because of all the superficial stuff that people seem to like.
Ron says:
Spoiled little girl. Give Miley credit; even if you don’t like her music, her music has sold a lot. BUT, she is a spoiled little girl. If she doesn’t like country that’s OK, but she should respect those that do.
Gregory House says:
You can give me Colt Ford and some red man to chew!!
Lady Gaga and Rupaul? Give me a break!!
Those cowboy hat wearing country folk would have welcomed that gal into country with open arms: Them freaky pop singers ruin the young ones ideals something fierce!!
Guess Miley can get her some beer bottles and an old piano and become a pop singer LMAO , Guess she did’nt watch the ama award show and witness Gloriana win best new act of the year!! Country Rules all the rest is just smoke and mirrors!! Go Colt Ford!!!!!
Redmaz says:
To Matthew, Ashley, and Benny. you seem to be very confused as to what Pop Music is. Pop is NOT an individual genre of music. It’s an industry consisting of many genres of music(including Country). Due to the your lack of musical knowledge, your posts have no credibility. .
…………………
To Dan, it’s hard to imagine that you have listened to every Country song recorded in the last five years. I can guarantee you haven’t, so your statement has no credibilty either..
To Janet, “Murder on Music Row” is a song by Larry Cordle and Larry Schell. By the time a couple of Pop acts like Jackson and Strait get a hold of it…it’s meaning has been lost. If they really meant what they were singing about, they wouldn’t be part of the industry they’re trashing..
Hat says:
She is not wrong! Look how they control pop country radio. All you hear is TS or a select few. There are so many more with better voices that dont get support or a chance.
Me says:
I still like Billy Ray Cyrus…If they reject someone must mean they are actually talented.
She says:
Has a right to defend her dad and have an opinion. I hate the way they discard people when they are no longer the favorite flavor. I like country music but the vibe is not always nice.
Dawn says:
This article disappointed me! Not that I wanted Miley to be a country artist but the fact that she would slam the country music world is disappointing. Also, I feel that country music has a wide variety of lyrics! I know that Miley has had much fame but I feel that she needs to be careful for all the toes that she’s stepping on…
Tracie says:
Its not political?! Yeah right, she didnt say anything that bad. She spoke her mind…and I know normally country artists arent allowed to do that. Shame shame. She also spoke highly of Dolly Parton.
linzmom says:
Sad, very sad. She thinks she is grown at 17. To make such blatant, across the board comments on so many levels shows her real immaturity. Move over Britney, Lindsey, and the other trashy young women in the media … Miley has arrived.
Mae says:
Tracie,”She spoke her mind?” What Mind? If this girl has one, it is hidden really well. How can she knock country? At least these artists can sing. She surely can’t. And she’s even worse at acting. As for Carrie Underwood having anything handed to her, that is about as stupid as Miley’s statement. Carrie has worked hard for everything she has and is well respected by Hollywood and Nashville artists. Some of these statements are soooooooooo lame.
Dennis says:
This girl was doing interviews about how hard life is when you are a celebrity before most people over 15 had even heard of her. The Climb was a great song and timed very well, but any young singer probably could have made that work. I personally don’t think Miley has the talent or beauty to make singing or acting work for very long. She really needs to focus on developing some inner beauty, and statements like this don’t make that happen. She really needed some better teachers and handlers and apparently has not got them. She is more focused on short-term hype than long term success, otherwise she would not burn bridges like this with Country Music or her TV show. Whether anyone agrees with her about either, classy people know not to say these things out loud. Too bad for her, but I have to say I saw it coming.
Langston says:
I don’t believe Miley was ever really considered country to begin with. She was 100% a Disney creation. Knowing the way this genre has been heading over the past 2 years it doesn’t surprise me that country music would have tried to cram her down our throats for a time (sound familiar?). There are people that feel if you are not from a southern state, you shouldn’t sing country. Maybe that’s why so many who handled Miley figured she was a shoe in given where she was from and who she was from. Just goes to show, it’s not geography! Anyway, from what I can gather from the last couple of years, Miley wasn’t really happy with being associated with country music. She probably did what she was told to do. When ultimately country music didn’t really embrace her the way everyone anticipated, she stopped trying and is now, finally saying what she thinks. I really don’t have an opinion about her talent (or lack of it). She’s an okay singer with okay acting abilities. If she can do something with that…more power to her.
And I understand a little where she’s coming from regarding country music being contrived. It didn’t used to be but lately…there aren’t as many artists with real substance (not that she had any to begin with). Singers are being cultivated by the record labels and the labels are making the decisions about what should be popular.
I can understand why some got their backs up after reading this article though. You can state your opinion without deliberately insulting people. She’s young, full of herself and not really thinking about what or how she’s saying things. Does it really matter? No. No one in this genre really wanted her a part of it and clearly, she feels the same. Bye-bye Miley.
Langston says:
Oh, and DENNIS - be very careful what you say. While you don’t feel she has the talent (and talent’s #1) physical beauty should have absolutely nothing to do with someone’s singing or acting ability. That’s the kind of attitude that creates many problems with young girls today and their view of themselves.
Always Right says:
Miley, please take Taylor Swift with you.
Mainstream country isn’t about cowboy hats and boots anymore anyway. It’s all about hairgel and highlights. Poser country.
Al S says:
No wonder her father got out of country, his Achy Breaky Heart is at the top of the Worst Country songs ever made. Her music is even worse. Those Cowboy wearing Singers Like Hank Williams, Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins,Patsy Cline, and hundreds of others are still outselling anything she has and will record. Some of those Country singers have been dead for over FIFTY YEARS. Lady GAG a singer right on paar with Miley.
DebbJr says:
She’s right! American Idol loser and winners are contrived country acts! I’m with Miley - had enough of those!!
amber says:
i see you dont have a lot of fan in country music just what i have been reading you do what your heart tell you i like your movie and tv show your pop music is ok your country music is good you allways can grow into country music go with your heart tell you
amber
Sarah says:
Hahahaha okay. No one wants her in country music anyway. Just because her dad was a country singer doesn’t mean that she has to be one. & what’s this about not relating teen girls & not watching television because that’s all that’s made her “famous”.
wkph says:
Billy Ray will be mad at Miley, and I didn’t know he had left country music.
Miley, remember not to bite the hand that fed you. Country music was Billy Ray’s claim to fame and helped him break into television and acting. It didn’t hurt that you were the daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus when you auditioned for Disney. I hope you don’t change your mind about country music in the future because the community might not embrace you. You are entitled to your opinion though. Isn’t America great?
wkph says:
Don’t go hating on Billy Ray because his daughter made a foolish and immature statement.
stephanie says:
she is a loser. Country music is the best. Miley does not now what she is talking about. She ca just shut her mouth about country music. I think that they should take her music of this website.
Wolfgang says:
Taylor swift has a face like Nicole kidman, she is very creative ..Good thing she is grateful for where she is to fans etc. as well knowing the value of kindness. Who wants to be mean anway unless you’re mean spirited?
Rugeruby says:
Thank Jesus
dan says:
The sad fact of the matter is bubblegum music, pop, country,r&b whatever, is the only part of the recording industry still selling truckloads of cd’s. Taylor Swift won her best album award at the grammys for helping to save a dying industry, not for her bland, mediocre album.
Jo says:
Miley.. you are a sad, spoiled little rich kid who had that show handed to you on a silver platter… and now look - it’s all gone to your head! Good luck in the real world honey! Country music never wanted you in the first place!!!!!!!
jafan says:
She says her dad left country music? but his new album are listed under country in itunes. and yes they sound like most of the country put of today. I don’t understand her. Most of the country acts today do not wear cowboy hats yea they may wear cowboy boot but i’m pretty sure there’s been a picture or two with her wear a pair……
Tracie says:
MAE: I am not wrong, anytime a female Country artist, I wont call Miley that, they are bashed. Just come here after an award show and you’ll see what I mean. I dont care about Miley but I still am a fan of Billy Ray’s. Dont think she should have included him in her opinon.
timcun says:
I immediately thought that she was talking about Taylor Swift when she said, “Unless you’re wearing a cowboy hat and cowboy boots and singing and whining about your girlfriend or boyfriend leaving you it’s not going to sell. You have to wear those cowboy boots and be sweet as pie.” I’m not a Taylor Swift fan but it sounds to me like Miley may be a little (or a lot) jealous of Taylor. She probably doesn’t want to sing Country because she would have to play second fiddle to Taylor and I think that would bruise her over-inflated ego.
I’ve heard Miley sing and doubt that she would be where she is today if her last name wasn’t Cyrus. It doesn’t break my achy breaky heart if she doesn’t want to sing Country. I would probably turn her music off anyway, just like I do when Taylor’s songs come on the radio.
Flattsfan says:
She doesn’t belong in country anyways! All that stuff she said about “it wont sell” is wrong because Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Reba McEntire, Martina McBride and all the other ladies in country are selling more than her!!!!!!!!!!
brenda says:
miley. i really like you and i realy love your song The Climb. it gives me a lot of inspiration for my disabibilities that i am facing and for what i am still having to fight for.You have a great dad and family life,so you need to follow your heart and what you believe in, but always remember where you came from. i hope that some day you can come back to country music. because you’ll always have a place in country music if you want it.
brenda
bettyb says:
WOW, I AM AMAZED THAT MILEY THINKS COUNTRY MUSIC IS CONTRIVED . THE REASON COUNTRY IS WHAT IT IS, IS THAT SO MANY CAN RELATE THE SONGS TO OUR REAL LIVES. SHE IS NO WAY AN EXPERT AT THIS POINT TO JUDGE ANY VENUE IN MUSIC. I NOW FIND HER QUITE ANNOYING AND HAVE ALWAYS WONDERED ABOUT HER LEVEL OF TALENT. HATE TO BE NEGATIVE , SO GOOD LUCK WITH WHATEVER SHE DOES!!!!!!!!!!!!
Virginia says:
Well, I guess she will make herself scarce in Nashville from now on. Seems a little ungrateful, since country music is how her daddy made a lot of his $$ and therefore gave her opportunities…..ungrateful is as ungrateful does.
Eric Toomer says:
Miley. Youre lil daddy got out of it because he was garbage….the one hit wonder…and i wanna think country radio gave you your first hit “The Climb”. Be thankful.
PAT says:
Britney had 2 kids with a man she believed was all there for her instead scammed her AFTERWARD GOING BACK with his first lady Shar before she went crazy on drugs lashing out. She felt humiliated anyone can see that-Not that she was right, BRITNEY WAS HUMILIATED BIG TIME! Miley didn’t suffer as Britney.
timcun says:
Hopefully this means we won’t be seeing her on any more Country music awards shows. And I don’t mean just singing but presenting or even sitting in the audience. As far as I’m concerned she can go away and stay away. Or in other words, don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya!
D Trotter says:
Being called “contrived” by a pop star created entirely by Disney and a teen TV show is as amusing as it is ironic. Turning around and criticizing TV, teen girls and Country Music, which also gave her a nice boost through her dubious role on the Country award shows, Miley must be intending to turn into a pop diva or something. Good luck with that.
ThatOneKid says:
WAY TO GO MILEY!
She speaks her mind, which is plenty of reason to respect her…its not worth lying just to have people like you…
If she did that then you all would be calling her fake and this and that…
Besides everything she said about country is true…
T. says:
Seems to me she’s alluding about the lack of variety on country radio, and doesn’t want to get caught in that niche.
When her dad broke through in 1992, there was a lot of variety. Big, superstar anthems from Reba and Garth (and BRC); thought provoking, folk-flavored musings from Suzy Bogguss, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Sawyer Brown and Hal Ketchum; the traditionalist leanings of Marty Stuart and Ricky Lynn Greg; and sentimental ballads from Doug Stone and Collin Raye. Regardless of their styles, these artists played with more conviction and, I feel, were far more distinctive than those on the charts now, with a few exceptions. I don’t blame the artists, I blame the industry and record executives for not having the courage to take risks on artistic variation. Tract housing may save time and money, but there’s more value and heart in the greater investment of a custom-build home.
kc says:
miley… i could swear i almost said “i love u miley” when ( terrifying i know) i heard u are stayin away from country… i couldnt be more happy :)
Ellie says:
I completely agree with whoever posted under the name “my opinion”
I think Miley actually has a point there… sure, not ALL country singers are like that, but there’s certainly quite a few that come to mind… One of them being Taylor Swift.
& to those of you bashing Pop music… Haha weren’t YOU the ones complaining about Miley bashing country music? Then YOU bash a genre yourselves. Pot/kettle much.
Also, Lady Gaga actually is very talented, & despite what you may think, she’s not fake at all. It’s obvious you haven’t watched any of her interviews or done any research on her, & so you don’t know anything about her.. That doesn’t give you much of a right to talk…
That being said, I LOVE country music… But you gotta admit.. The girl has a point there.. Not with all country music, but definitely a lot of it. Oh, and I am NOT a Miley fan btw.
Diamond says:
I’ll try this again since my first one didn’t make it through. Country music awards shows and certain websites “adopted” Miley due to her father, her Disney popularity, and the broad appeal she has to a certain demographic. It was not because she was knocking on country music’s door. But, she didn’t refuse the invitation, so some of this is “on her” for taking advantage of opportunities, then bashing the industry/genre that provided them.
Linda Sawyers says:
Her few hits are contrived. A TN girl going to CA and name dropping. A love song and now a movie! And she seems to be in “love” with every fella she is in a show with! Country got her where she is(her father supported them FINE with country music) Billy got out because he could not sell himself anymore. I love BILLY and do not see why they do not like him BUT.. I think MILEY wanted country and they wouldn’t have her! HER “FRIEND” Taylor seems to do ok with no boots or hats. Kelli Pickler. REBA doesn’t have to wear that stuff to have a hit! And other than this movie, (which NOW I wont go see)what has she done lately, but look like a tattooed slut. Let’s ask Her mother where CLASS Comes into the picture for your childs(childrens) future!
Hey gaga says:
Hey gaga, shhhhhh, no gives a crap about what you think either, she’s not right at all. She slammed an entire genre and it’s fans. She also slammed her fans. Guess what Miley, the only people buying your CD’s and concert tickets are little girls. Country has more soul, feeling, and is more original than anything she sings. Party in the USA, REAAAL original. On behalf of country fans Miley, thank you, we don’t want you. That’s the last thing country needs is more poison to the REAL country sound. That’s all her music and Lady GAGA’s music is, poison to real music. If it wasn’t for country, there would be no Miley Cyrus, so I guess we are to blame there. But all she is doing is trash talking so she is no better than the TV watching little girls she says she isn’t one of. And Ellie, we are bashing Pop music because it’s NOT MUSIC, it’s noise and it destroys true music. ZERO talent involved in pop. Creativity yes, talent no.
That’s news Miley says:
“All they wear is cowboy hats and cowboy boots and whine when they sing”. Does anyone else not see what that statement sounds like? Basically the exact same thing as: All Asians can’t drive or all African Americans are good at basketball. Sounds like a stereotype. She is only famous because of her daddy who was one of those cowboys. Not to knock Billy because he was the man, but he got out of it because he wasn’t selling songs anymore, just like what will happen to ms. Miley. There is nothing original either about what Miley does, she has an ok voice, but those songs might be the stupidest pieces of white noise I have ever heard. So good news today, country doesn’t have another pop singer to put up with.
Heather says:
MILEY if you HATE COUNTRY MUSIC that much then WHY DID YOU and YOUR FATHER host the CMT Award? Why did YOU PERFORM at the ACM last year? Miley we all know you are just like Jessica Simpson who is very DESPERATE for FAME and MEDIA ATTENTION really your FAME is OVER! At least country music is real and relates to life unlike your songs that talks about guys, partying, and giving negative messages to the people! Unlike you who shake your booty and dance on a pole acting like a whore! Don’t you live in NASHVILLE? WELL WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? MOVE OUT OF NASHVILLE ALREADY!
GalPal says:
That’s great news! Country does not need anymore “pretenders” to country. Both she and Taylor should go to the disney channel and “sing” pop.
Ellie says:
I’ve tried several times to post, but it won’t show up… I hope this one does.
@Hey Gaga,
before you say there’s no talent, I suggest you look up some of Lady Gaga’s acoustic performances, or performances of her song “Speechless”
A lot of pop singers don’t have talent, I’ll give you that, but if you’d watched ANY videos of Gaga singing at the piano, you’d know that she is actually very talented. It’s a shame people think that just because she’s pop, she has no talent, and don’t even give her a chance. I’m not much a fan of her music, but she’s definitely got talent
& also, someone else might think that country music is just noise. It’s a matter of opinion. I love country, but don’t act like your opinion is a fact, because it’s not… & I’m not saying pop is better either. Like I said, it’s a matter of opinion.
patsy says:
go back to the bubble gum music miley.no one will miss you.you are to grown for your age.so gone back and try and be a teenager.
carriefan13 says:
Smart girl…i can barely take Swift–with Miley in the country scene i would have to kill myself
Lila says:
Heather - WHOA KIDDO! While I don’t like what Miley said in this article I think you need to take a deep breath. I get that your angry but name calling (especially the ones you used)are unnecessary and only makes you seem hateful and not much better than Miss Cyrus. Hopefully someone will come along and swiffer up your foul rant.
Breash says:
Country music and its millions of fans doesn’t need Miley Cyrus. Bye, bye, bye
gem says:
You know I like Miley, but with the statement she gave of country music I dont feel like suporting her at all…
I kept thinking and thinking of who she reminded me off, and guess what!? KANYE WEST!!! The only difference is that Kanye is very tanlented. Miley is talented but not enough to act like a “know it all and Im on top of the world”. Also I Like her song “The Climb”, but please stop playing it 10x a day country radio.
P.S.
Love country, thanku country radio for keeping us up to date, and thanku CMT.
Kathleen says:
GOOD! lets hope she don’t change her mind n stays out of country music!
Anita says:
Not all country artists wear cowboy hats and boots. Reba, Carrie, Taylor, Lady Antebellum, Miranda, and so many others. Country music deals with real life situations and puts a smile on my face every time I hear something country. Miley is ok, however i think if she did a ten song country album, of something more of a sound like Miranda Lambert’s first album “Kerosene”, I think she may just move her way into the industry. I just hope that Taylor doesn’t back out of country or switch genres anytime soon!!
Julie says:
Does she even know what contrived means? It’s an awfully big word for someone with her limited brain capacity. The only thing contrived that I see is how she and her living-vicariously-through-her parents show up everywhere, even the Oscars.
brett farve says:
tim mcgraw greatest singer of any genre toby keith second then trace then rascal flatts then jason aldean and emerson drive miley is like pop trying to get media attention tim grew up poor had to work his way up carrie is undeserving she was given fame . taylor is young soon shell do music like tim once he retires its passing of the torch
tommy says:
MILEY MILEY MILEY I THINK YOU BETTER GET BACK TO TENN AGAIN JUST LIKE YOUR MOVIE
country fan says:
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, yet I find I agree with Miley to some degree. I have heard some excellent singers on country radio that did not fit the IMAGE that is expected, so they don’t get played or given a decent chance. The first winners of CAN YOU DUET, Kate and Will, were excellent (better than Steel Magnolia, however you do not here their music played - wrong IMAGE. So Miley has a point. Her voice is no worse than some and as far as I can tell-she’s not out drinking or making a total fool of herself. She’s just trying to express herself (like other’s before her), and with age comes a certain wisdom she will eventually learn. Give her a break - no one is perfect.
Katie says:
Ok, Miley, your dad didn’t leave country, country left your dad. And honestly, when I thought of country as a kid, Billy Ray was the first image I had because of the mullet and cowboy boots, so he perpetuated that stereotype.
And honestly, while I can find some Miley songs I like, she’s just not a good enough singer and I don’t like her persona. Mostly I don’t mind when pop or rock singers try crossing over into country because I think they can enrich the genre, but I’m glad she’s staying off my radio.
It’s true she gets some uncalled-for flak, but she usually brings it on herself when she says things like this.
jess123 says:
WOW if she doesn’t like country then why did she do the hannah montana movie why didn’t they get someone else that is really country and not just a wanna be brat. i used to be a Miley fan but not anymore. i am more of a big country music fan than to be a spoiled rotten teenagers fan. She needs to find out what she wants to do with he life and not just go through life partying and been a brat. She is more of a disney star than any other kind of star and that is were she needs to stay.Bye-Bye Miley. Also its a good thing she is not going to be a country singer because if she was the country music will be ruined.

Red Fox26 says:
Miley really does need to shut that mouth of her’s I can’t believe she is talking bad about Country Music. I used to like her and now Man somebody needs to get her off the TV for good
countryfan says:
There’s politics in everything. Even Country music. But the fact that she’s calling country music contrived when she’s not even a country artist really pisses me off. shes 16 years old, how does she even know what that word means? She needs to stick to trying to sing to little 10 year old girls and keep her comments to herself that have nothing to do with her.
Amanda says:
My question is why almost all of you are ragging on Miley. Their are worse people out there than her. I have nothing againist country music or any other kind of music. But a lot of you are sterotyping and you should stop. You people should say nothing anyway. And face it, if you were rich and selling albums, you would be the same way!
Amanda says:
Oh and bytheway, if those magazines don’t get what they want out of the stars they exaggerate to sell. So most of that could have been a lie or she was just speaking her mind (which most of you would do to.)
Ben says:
she never was country to begin with real country
Dennis says:
If it wasn’t for Country Music she would have never been able to get famous off of her daddies career in Country… She has no clue what she is talking about, Miley PLEASE stay away from Country we like to keep it real anyway not fake like you.. Is it just me or does anyone else sense that miley will be the next mental britney breakdown star…
Rich says:
Problem with these kid “Stars” is that they are too dang young! They aren’t sure if they like one song from the next day to day. Their minds change daily! Unfortunately Miley is growing up in front of everyone, like, Britney, like Lindsey…etc. Best thing that could happen for her is to have a break from stardom and be a real kid again. Maybe then she’ll find her path on her own with out Disney’s help.
Main thing for us is to mind our own business, leave the judging to “Lord” and buy what you like. So I guess I’ll forgive Miley as the Lord forgave his desciples.
One bit of advice for all ‘yall young musicians and some of ya old ones…LOL “LET THE MUSIC DO THE TALKING” If we like it, we’ll buy it! But ya never have to talk bad about anything or anyone. It just reflects back on you….
Kelly says:
She’s saying country music is contrived? I’m sorry, but Party in the USA is the most contrived song I’ve ever heard. Miley even admitted to never hearing a Jay-Z song although she seems to love “bobbin’ her head” and “shakin’ her hips” to his music. Sounds like her remarks are a direct attack of Taylor Swift too. She needs to learn staying true to yourself, not stepping on everyone else, brings true success.
Monica says:
miley is an airhead. this is clearly an attack on taylor swift.
Bruce says:
I luv you Taylor!!!!!!!!!
Lenox says:
Yeah, this probably was an attack on Taylor to some degree. But Taylor brings out the worst in people. Just read all the blog posts.
Anyway, Miley is well aware of the definition of contrived since her words were just that. It’s obvious she is purposely distancing herself from country music and the farther away she gets from it the better. She wants to make real sure that no one ever associates her with country ever again.
Contrats Miley…it worked.
Tammy says:
Maybe she should pay attention to the lyrics of the music she sings. It is about the same thing. I say good riddance. I don’t feel that she has talent. I believe that the behaviour she has shown is abhorrid and Disney should boot her to the road. She is on the road to becoming another Brittany or Lindsay. Congrats Billy your raised a girl to be proud of….NOT
Myrna says:
I cannot believe I just read what she had to say about country music. Also cannot believe so many comments and hope Missy Miley reads them. Doesnt she know how she got her break from her fathers one hit song. Don’t mean to hit on him but I couldnt never understand how he has stayed in the business so long. All those little girls that she doesnt know fell in love with someone they thoughts was a really neat nice person. A nice person that had almost nude pictures taken that she didnt know they were being taken. A nice person that dances for them on a pole like she was an adult. It seems she just wants to push those little girls to the side bex she doesnt needs them any longer, but they are still wearing shirts with HM on them and carrying their bookbags. And most of those little girls love COUNTRY MUSIC especially Taylor Swift that wears cowboys boots. My thoughts before I read her comment was that she was following BS and LL path. The dress she wore at the Oscars was to old for her trying to push up her breast, come on I couldnt believe that either when I saw that dress on her. She will probably want to eat her words when her hits bottom outs or when the boy you see her kissing on that she just made the movie with. If she wants to climb that mountain she needs to take back her comment bex when he is over her, she will want to write a crying song.
Forever and Always Country says:
I can’t stand Miley. I very dislike her. I’m glad she doesn’t like country because then I don’t have to listen to her horrifying voice anymore. Forever and Always country music fan!!!!!
Bigo says:
She’s so young and ignorant that she doesn’t realize that bashing any type of music or group is destroying part of her base support. Yes, she has the freedom to express it publicly, but be prepared for the outrage as seen here. A lot of people would have supported her by purchasing her products even though they’re country fans, but once they’re bashed or their music is bashed then it “Katie Bar The Door”.
Remember the “Dixie Chicks”? WHO? I notice they’re trying to get back in the good graces of the fans. Not Me!!! I hope they get rejected again and any artist that condoms them. I’ll reject them as well. Why don’t they just sing and keep their mouth shut otherwise. Just smile and be gracious and you’ll have a lot less headaches.
Shadow says:
Pretty nice, Bigo. Condemn the Dixie Chicks for doing the same thing you just did, expressing an opinion. Nice that you exercise that option, but don’t think they should be allowed to..
Bigo says:
Shadow,
Thanks for your response! Apparently, I didn’t make myself clear. They have the right to their opinion but when expressed openly, I have a right to reject them and their opinion if they’re trashing me or something I believe in. You have the right to reject me and my opinion but the big difference is this…I’m not a celebrity and I’m not trying to sell you anything. If you’re going to be a sales person, (which celebrities are) you first have to sell yourself before you can sell a product and you certainly cannot be trashing the person you’re trying to sell. Otherwise, you’ll loose the sell. We are their customers and as they say…”The customer is always right”.
Shadow says:
And what your selling here, I’m not buying either.
S says:
I’m glad she doesn’t want to sing Country because I couldn’t handle both her and Taylor Swift. Personally I wish she would take Taylor to whatever genre she plans to sing so that I wouldn’t have to listen to her off-key singing any more.
Y says:
I don’t agree with her comments about Country music but I also can’t believe how much people contradict themselves on this subject. They all have a go at Miley for the way she “dresses” or her Party in the USA performance at the TCAs 2009. At the same time, they’re moaning about Taylor Swift’s songs. You can’t have it both ways - you don’t like if they “grow up too fast” and you don’t like it if “they act younger than they’re real age” (what’s wrong with wanting to stay young and enjoying our youth?). People just like to criticise others and highlight the faults in them. I agree with the fact - the ones that are put nicely, of course - that Taylor isn’t the strongest female vocalist (coming from a huge fan who idolises her) and I think Carrie should win in that category because a) she deserves it, and b) Taylor won’t receive any backlash. Back to the actual article… Miley should have thought about her comments before she actually said them though because there are a lot of people around her who are connected to Country music in one way or another. She must have been aware of the response that would follow her comments.
kajori says:
i want miley’breakout cd but i dont know when will
i buy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!……
katiee barkdoll says:
I can’t Believe she would say that ! like she grew up in country music with billyray, and hannah montana started out in country, im only 14, but she was my idol, but now since she like “dissed” country, i feel why is she loved in the world ?. She grew up/starrted with counrty, she is going down hill, now, shes ungrateful, and she doesnt care ! she was noimiated in kids choice awards! but now who cares. about her. ? And her new movie last song, it looks like a freaking country movie, i cant believe she would do that !
she’s needs a realatiy checkkk… and think about how she influenced little kids about country so when there older there going to be like ” i dont like country cause mily cyrus doesnt like it ” not even funny
lil meme says:
she can’t sing any way i try to like her but she does’t want that the people like her i dont know and i don’t the hell care
e18 says:
OMG!!!! That piece of trash needs to shut her little mouth. Of course she can’t relate to teenage girls. She had to start working at twelve to support mommy and daddy after daddy’s failed country music career. Now she is bashing country music for her dad, honey your daddy had to give up on country music because he sucked, and guess what your voice is week, you suck too. No one wants their daughters to grow up and be like you. I know I don’t want mine to grow up and have 4 ’serious’ relationships before their 17th birthday not to mention giving lap dances to 45 year old men. You’re not Marilyn Monroe, so give it up, quit trying to act like your this good girl/17 year old sex symbol. You are a loser, crawl under a rock and stay there.
Katie says:
Haha I was sick of her when she first started and I’m still sick of her and her attitude today. Country music is a lot more real then that crap that she does. She doesn’t even have that great of a voice range. I honestly just laugh at her when she does stuff like this cause all it’s doing is making people dislike her even more. I really don’t think anyone in country music gives to s***’s what she says. They are all making way more money then her and are way more respected.
Miguel says:
Now if Buck Owens, George Jones Or other old traditional artists said the same thing Miley did about today’s country music execs would you be putting them down like you’re putting down Miley. Opinions are like assholes… everybody has one. She’s putting down record execs she isn’t putting down modern country music. Musicians have been disgusted with record execs since record execs came into existance.
mike says:
wow she really has no music talent the only reason she got famouse in the first place was because of her dad if it wasnt for him she wouldnt be were she is today and she says she hates country music o please miley you need a wake up call thats all i have to say about it
