Which Kind of Country Is Laura Bell Bundy?

Posted: February 25th, 2010 at 11:05 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

A country Norah Jones? A country Amy Winehouse? Or classic country, like Dolly Parton from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas? Laura Bell Bundy would probably go with the Dolly Parton kind of classic country sound for a comparison. That seems to best fit this new voice she's bringing to the genre. Her vocals definitely have some sass and twang like Parton's, but her Broadway roots give her more than enough personality to shine through the clutter. That's why she's such a breath of fresh air, and why her video for "Giddy On Up" is one of the most streamed on CMT.com day in and day out lately. You can even see her sense of humor in this little 60-second video on People magazine's Web site when she talks about how much her own mom looks like Parton, with dimples and light eyes and enormous boobs. "God love her, they are still sticking straight up," she raves.

I think she’s talented but the video is too corny for me. I don’t like “corny” — I like “classy”.

“Corny”…that’s not the word I was looking for…but I can’t say the word I’m lookin for. LOL

Got news for you people this girl is not country. I guess if enough people tell you that she is you’ll start to believe it though.

this video is too much, not enough singing, too much stupid dancing, most videos these days are over produced and the songs comes in second.

Too much like a Broadway show number.

I think this is a miserable excuse for country music. This is Broadway crap and it’s destined to fail.

So far this is the only place she’s getting any publicity and has basically had a zero impact on country radio.

It seemed to fake for me but I loved Legally Blonde the musical so I’ll wait for her second single to judge.

Those of you who say she isn’t country have no idea what country music is. Do your research. Listen to Dolly back in the day when country music was ACTUALLY country music. If anyone isn’t country music it’s the sad excuses that dominate the top 5 on the top 20. THAT isn’t country.

    @Lauren

I know what country music is. Laura is pop country in this song and video.

Meant to add this song is no where near the classic country sound. Anyone who think it is, are the ones who don’t know what classic country music is.

Not sure why we have to go back in the day, to listen to Dolly. Last I checked, she was still making Country music.

Better yet, since we have no idea what Country music is, maybe Lauren should tell us about the new music of ACTUAL Country artists like Corb Lund, Gene Watson, Ryan Bingham, Wayne Hancock, Patty Loveless, Miss Leslie, Amber Digby, or Hot Club of Cowtown.

Snookie - those aren’t “actual” country artists. They are roots artists. Roots country is no “more” country than all the sub-genre’s of the pop country industry. Roots country doesn’t “own” country any more than the pop country industry “owns” it.

I’m not crazy about this girl (as a country artist yet), but Lauren is correct in as this is as much country as “9 to 5″ from Dolly was. Thing about Dolly, is she had more to her than the “over acting” style of country. She also had a alot of the authentic feelings country such as “Jolene”. So, for me, the jury is still out on Laura.

Yeah those aren’t actual country artists!!! Robin “The Board Blunder” strikes again. Better listen to her Snookie. She’s the board genius! lol. This one has to take the cake in the lack of credibility department from this person. This is too much man!!!!!!!!!…I ain’t kiddin’

Swilly - they are no more “actual” than pop country artist. The board blunder did strike again. Swilly your postings make you look so uneducated. You should educate yourself before speaking. They are “roots” artist and have no “ownership” of the entire country genre.

“Robin the board blunder”!!!! LOL @Swilly! Good one! It fits her perfectly! Hey can I use that one too? Robin you might be able to pull this schtick off on your uneducated pop buddies, but that’s it.

Nice of you to miss the point of my post, Robin. Now be sure to correct your fellow Pop fans as well, when they complain that real Country doesn’t exist anymore.
