Eric Church Has a "Lotta" Explaining to Do

Posted: February 8th, 2010 at 5:26 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Eric ChurchIn this Q&A with the Washington Post, Eric Church sounds very complicated. Maybe even a little conflicted. Because first he says, "Country music, the thing I love about it, more than any other music, it does represent real life and it represents Middle America better than any format." But then Church goes on to talk openly about his controversial song, "Lotta Boot Left to Fill." You know, the one where he criticizes his country music brethren? Like one-hit wonders and pretty boys acting tough, and how they sing about Johnny Cash but the man in black would've whipped their ass. And how if it looks good on TV it'll look good on a CD. Yeah, that one. After the head of his record label heard it for the first time, he told Church, "Well, I played 'Lotta Boot.' Eric, I'll be honest with you. A lot of people were pretty nervous when they heard it." But to Church, that was the very reason to get the song out there. "It makes you a little uncomfortable," he said.

~I agree with Eric. It is a great song and great CD. I prefer real artists with real country songs, not the fabricated stuff that is made just to fit in with Nashville.

I love his “Carolina” album. It’s amazing :)

“Lotta Boot Left To Fill” is awful. Well, duh, most of today’s singers can’t match “the legends” — Hank, Waylon, Cash. Neither could most of the singers in their eras, either.

And few of the artists on mainstream radio are explicitly claiming that they are the second coming of Johnny Cash, anyway. They are not doing this any more than some rookie claiming he is the next Babe Ruth.Maybe there are one or two or three out there who have made some boastful comment, but that’s probably about it.

The whole song stinks to high heaven even more because Eric Church is at best a 3rd rate talent. He has hits with garbage like “Love Your Love The Most.” The whole thing comes across as a no-talent like Church telling people who at least have some talent that they have “a lotta boot to fill” because they aren’t at the Johnny Cash or Waylon level. Church needs to take a good hard look in the mirror.

Eric Church comes across as a real jerk to me, not just now but with his behavior on the Rascal Flatts tour. Sure, a lot of the legends acted like jerks too. But at least they had the talent to back it up.

Hotel…Church is referring to singers who name-check Cash in their songs. It’s a song. Relax.

I saw Eric perform an intimate show during CMA week a few years back - he blew me away. He can sing, he can write, and he has a touch of outlaw in him.

When you can write a song better than Church’s worst, then you can shoot your mouth off.

Lotta Boot is a great song. Sometimes the truth hurts, and those that don’t like the lyrics just can’t handle the truth. Church tells it like it is….if only those boy bands WOULD give it up. :)

Right on Jimmy! Hotelmotel, you are so wrong about Eric. Eric is outlaw, country and rock. And throw in his writing skills too. He is touring with Hank Jr. You can’t argue with Hank’s stamp of approval.

Eric Church isn’t an “outlaw,” he just is using that as a marketing stunt. Eric Church is little or no better than the boy band types that he seems to be mocking. He’s a hypocrite and a fraud. As for his writing skills, his biggest it is a song in which he tells his woman that he enjoys “her love” more than george strait songs, fries with mustard, and a bunch of other related things. Its lazy songwriting and its hardly even flattering. “Hey, honey, I love you more than “Unwound!” Terrible stuff.

It sounds like you’re the one who needs to take a good hard look in the mirror. Eric Church is about the closest thing we have to traditional country music anymore. If you like Rascal Flatts, good for you, but that’s not country music.

Well, I happen to love the song Love your love the most. When a guy can admit his honey is better than all that stuff, it sure beats the alternative!

“Eric Church is the closest thing we have to traditional country music anymore” Ryan, that could very well be one of the top 10 most ridulous statements I’ve seen on the cmt message board. You obviously listen to very little of today’s country music.

So HOtel mOtel, what is it that has you all in a bunch regarding the RF tour and Eric…moonshine bus parties? Someone took all Joe Don’s Hair gel? Stripper flag football games? Does sound like a He**raiser touring with boy scouts.

I’m not gonna lie, I am also a fan of Eric Church, but I do agree with Hotelmotel that his song lyrics are a bit mediocre. Damn, I HOPE my man would love me more than his fries! ha! His songs are written to be honest and true, but it’s sometimes hard to accept as real “country”. Then again, anything referring to boots, beer, and trucks pass up for country nowadays…

This song doesn’t make me nervous. It makes me mad that this little kid, Taylor Swift, is topping the charts on CMT for weeks and weeks in a row when she is a teenie-bopper singing about being a teenager all day. This is not country music. Lets put someone who sings real country music back at number 1.

This is one of my favorite songs by EC. He is in my opinion one of the only true country artist we have left. And yes he’s probably referring to Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts etc, and the dang reason is because that isn’t anywhere near country music. I challenge anyone to listen EC’s 2 cds and hear him live and then tell me he honestly isn’t one of the best in the business. And just for the people who have no clue what they’re talking about, “lotta boot left to fill” ends with him singing, “I guess we all, got alotta boot left to fill.” He’s including himself.

I totally agree with these boots. Taylor Swift needs to go on the Disney Channel. She is not country, and your right she sings about a different boyfriend every week and cant understand why they leave her ass. ERIC CHURCH IS REAL COUNTRY TODAY.Oh and Rascal Faggs shouldnt be even “classified” as country. BYE
