Natalie Hemby Adds to Girl Power to "White Liar"
When I listen to Miranda Lambert songs, I get an overwhelming sense of girl power. Not necessarily because the songs are about that, because they aren't always so, but there's just something I can't put my finger on. And now I know what it is: Natalie Hemby. She co-wrote four of the best songs on Lambert's Revolution album, including the current No. 1 "White Liar," which is basically a cheating song with a twist at the end. (Turns out she's been cheating, too). And "Only Prettier," which is like a girl fight but with less of the hate and more of the bless-your-heart sarcasm. And "Airstream Song," about longing for a roll-out-of-town gypsy kind of life. And "Virginia Bluebell," about a girl who needs to get up and bloom. "I have this little Miranda vault with ideas and lines that I think would fit her ... you know, like ‘Only Prettier ... ,' which is clever and funny just like her," Hemby said. That explains a lot, because every song they write together sounds like it's been taken from the deepest, darkest secrets of girls everywhere. And in my opinion, no other songwriting teams have ever done that so well.
