New Music Videos: Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, Ryan Bingham, Bomshel, Jaron, Connor Christian
In new videos screened by the CMT New Music Video Evaluation Team this week, Keith Urban remembers summer, Ryan Bingham sings a movie theme, Rascal Flatts deliver a somber message, Bomshel are "19 and Crazy," Jaron twists a message and Connor Christian brings a "Sunday Suit."
Artist: Keith Urban
Video: "Til Summer Comes Around"
Director: Noble Jones
In a very atmospheric video, Keith Urban chases summer memories at the beach and at a closed-down amusement park. It's a very dark video, but it well suits the dark-hued song.
Panelists' comments: "Keith looks fantastic here." "Very cool guitar scenes." "That's pretty long and pretty dark." "But I like it."
Artist: Ryan Bingham
Video: "The Weary Kind"
Director: Danny Clinch
Ryan Bingham sings -- in a weary-sounding voice -- the pivotal song from the new movie, Crazy Heart. He wrote the song with the film's music producer, T Bone Burnett.
Panelists' comments: "He is very convincing with that song." "It's long -- for a video. They should cut a verse." "I like him. He's got some real road in his voice."
Artist: Rascal Flatts
Video: "Why"
Director: Dan Rubottom
Rascal Flatts do what is in essence a long public service announcement on the subject of untreated depression and how it can lead to suicide, especially as it affects young people.
Panelists' comments: "I get the message." "They really didn't need all the graphics." "Well, it is what it is."
Artist: Bomshel
Video: "19 and Crazy"
Director: Howard/Van/Welch
Bomshel perform a very lively energetic stage version of "19 and Crazy," with tour clips interspersed throughout the video. Bomshel-ers Kristy Osmunson and Kelley Shepard are two of the song's writers.
Panelists' comments: "They look great here." "Their message is a little happier than before." "Very upbeat."
Artist: Connor Christian
Video: "Sunday Suit"
Director: Jonathan Barbee
Well-traveled troubadour Connor Christian has been around the block a time or two and knows how to work a song, as he does here.
Panelists' comments: "He's got an odd accent but I kinda like it." "Too much banjo." "The song is better than the video."
Artist: Jaron and the Long Road to Love
Video: "Pray for You"
Director: Hank Friedmann
Jaron hit upon the idea of turning a prayer for his significant other into a sort of voodoo-inspired prayer for all manner of bad things to happen to her. The song sounds sweet on the surface, but underneath it is not.
Panelists' comments: "He needs to add 'bless your heart' to that." "Miranda Lambert has that covered." "I don't know that it's such a great idea to launch your career with a gimmicky song." "
Consensus: Keith Urban's "Til Summer Comes Around" debuted on CMT in hot shot rotation on Tuesday (Jan. 12).

One of Keith’s best videos yet! Of course I love ALL of Keith’s videos but this one really expresses the song and the heartbreak that comes along with a summer love. I agree. This song has a haunting melody and it is gorgeous! Nice video. I wonder where it was filmed?

If you mention new music videos and you list every artist and song screened this week how can you leave out John David Kent and the Dumb Angels. The song is called “My Girl”. If I’m not mistaken… They are winning (by a landslide!) this weeks poll for best new video. And rightfully so I might add. The song AND the band are awsome. Real life stuff ya know?
Ice Princess says:
Keith Urban wins this hands down.
ruth walker says:
Keith, love your songs. Would have loved to see you help out Jimmy Buffet at his concert for the states that are devastated with the oil problems. Thanks to CMT
