Carrie Underwood Wins Award, Gets TV Role, Etc.

Posted: January 7th, 2010 at 6:06 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Carrie UnderwoodThis has been a very busy, very newsy week for Carrie Underwood. Last night (Jan. 6), she won favorite country music artist at the People's Choice Awards (and kind of stumbled but then steadied herself on her way to the stage, thank God). Second, she told People magazine that she wants her upcoming wedding to have a groom (Mike Fisher, we hope), good food and an open bar, and she admits she's going to rock big hair and eyeliner. And third, she announced that she's going to appear on the CBS show, How I Met Your Mother, or as I like to call it, Doogie Howser Grows Up to Be a Womanizer. She will play a pharmaceutical sales representative and that episode will air in March.

I was so happy when Carrie got Favorite Country Artist and Keith Urban won Favorite Male Artist! To me, those were the highlights of the People’s Choice Awards, because they were my top picks, and my top picks in the TV and Movie categories didnt win. Oh well. Congrats Carrie!

I’m happy for her wedding but I saw her variety show so I won’t be watching. She should stick to singing.

She said she wants her wedding to have a groom (Mike Fisher, we hope). Yes, we hope! There is Carrie, displaying that wonderfully dead-pan sense of humor that catches you off guard, then makes you laugh your behind off. It shows that she doesn’t take herself too seriously, and how humble she can be about her amazing, beautiful singing talent. There isn’t a mean bone in this young woman’s body, and she deserves all the wonderful things that are happening to her. Congratulations on the award; well deserved!!!!!

Big Congratulations Carrie on your well deserved win ; you were just glowing last night and what a heartfelt acceptance speech. I will be watching on your first acting debut. No matter what she is still the best. A girl who never forgets her beginnings. More power to you on 2010.

Carrie can really sing, but she needs to write her own songs to impress me. I can’t stand to hear her talk. She does have great singing pipes though.

  • JP says:

    Posted: January 7th, 2010 at 8:42 pm

To Jim- Carrie does write her own songs just check it out on her new Album! She has a perfect speaking voice, that’s why she is picked to host shows…plus have her own 2 hour show. Not everyone can do that, especially if you don’t have a good speaking voice. Not only the voice, but the intelligence and the class…she has it all!

  • Ty says:

    Posted: January 7th, 2010 at 8:47 pm

Jim-Where have you been? Carrie had 3 #1’s on Carnival Ride that she cowrote and 7 (including her #1Cowboy Casabova) on Play On that she co wrote. Taylor cowrites also with Liz Rose. She does not write the songs by herself. I have a feeling that NOTHING about Underwood would impress you or Flower. You both are full of hate—That is so sad. Congratulations Carrie on your award and many accomplishments–and many more in 2010.

Yes it is kind of weird that the two fan bases hate one another. But Carrie really did deserve the Female Vocalist of the year award last year. I think it was the CMA’s I just don’t understand how that award went to Taylor. Unless the award is based on record sales instead of Vocal talent. Carrie is clearly the winner in that department. No one can dispute that. No one who has any musical sense that is.

Did anyone see the Coltons Point Times article on the internet: “Carrie Underwood — Yet Another Country Act Like Taylor swift Lost to Pop?” He seems to feel Simon Cowell and the American Idol crowd are exerting an unhealthy amount of control over her career, pushing her steadily away from her Country roots.

  • Katie says:

    Posted: January 7th, 2010 at 11:34 pm

Congrats to Carrie on all the good things going on! I definitely think she’s got a good sense of humor, so I’m sure she’ll do well on the show. I thought she was pretty good hosting the CMAs which would be harder than acting because it’s live, so I’m sure she’ll be fine when filmed.

And, there is no reason for Carrie and Taylor fans to disagree on anything. I definitely voted for Carrie Underwood on American Idol, and I also bought both of Taylor’s CDs the first weeks they came out. They have different styles, but they both have a pop appeal and they are both very kind, honest people who really love their fans. And I’m a fan of both.

Considering the amount of talent these 2 girls have, they’re likely to be vying for the same awards for a long time to come, so people need to calm down. They’ll both get the recognition they deserve.

Sandman, the CMA Female Vocalist award is not a Vocal talent award. It is for outstanding achievement in Country Music over the last year, including performances, appearances, record sales, touring and more. It’s for the female who had the best year. I think CMA got that one right. Regarding the fan bases, there are some not-so-nice posters on both sides. I think the TS fans like Carrie; but maybe not her fans, several of who ALWAYS have some snide remark to make like the one above your post.
But this is a blog about good things for Miss Underwood (soon to be Fisher!), so let’s leave TS out of it please.

Carrie Underwood is incredible she is beautiful and she can sing. Taylor Swift is cute but can’t sing a lick. I don’t hate Taylor but talent is talent and the only talent that she has is writing. She doesn’t hold a candlestick to Carrie when it comes to singing. She also doesn’t deserve CMA Vocalist Award that should have went to Carrie.Granted Taylor has had a good year for record sales and that’s great but as a singer myself I base everything off the voice and she just doesn’t have a good one.

D Trotter - I did not see the Coltons Point Times article on the internet, but will look for it. I’m not sure how the conclusion can be made that she is a country act “lost to pop” since her albums have become more and more country. Her albums do have decidely country rock or country pop flaired songs like “Cowboy Casanova” and “Before He Cheats”. But Some Hearts have about 4 straight pop songs (they weren’t country pop at all) and neither her second or third album had straight pop songs on them.

So, “Some Hearts” had these straight pop songs on them:

    “Some Hearts”
    “Lessons Learned”
    “That’s Where It Is”
    “Whever You Remeber”
    “Inside Your Heaven”

Her first album had alot two songs that are much more country than the “normal” pop country and that’s “I Ain’t In Checotah Anymore” and “Wasted”. Then the rest of the tracks (7 of them) are pop/rock country.

“Carnival Ride” nor “Play On” have not one straight pop song on it. They are heavily ladden in pop/rock country, but “Canival Ride” had “Flat on the Floor” which is more solidly country and “I Told You So” which is decidly country.

“Play On” is also heavily ladden with pop/rock country but also has a handful of songs that are decidly country; “Someday When I Stop Loving You”, “Look At Me” and “What Can I Say”.

Rascal Flatts definitely sings more straight pop songs (and releases them as singles) than Carrie Underwood does. While I’m convinced Taylor’s songs lean more pop than anything (except “Before He Cheats”, “Last Name” and “Cowboy Casanova) Carrie has released as singles, MTV competition has convinced me that even Taylor is pop country. I don’t think Taylor is as “in love” with country and committed to staying country as Carrie (one example is her huge committment to the Grand Ole Opry which only pays $250 per night for an appearance), but at this point they are still both contemporary “pop” country.

Oh great, she’s going to ruin one of my favorite shows on TV. Neil Patrick Harris, I love you but in the future, please steer clear of annoying guest stars such as this one. Nobody outside of country music even cares about her. She’s trying super hard to be like Britney Spears. But I doubt she’ll bring in even 1/10 the audience that the Britney episode brought in last year. She’s so BORING and plain looking, nothing about her interests me…

Robin, I was just wondering if anyone else saw the article. You could probably Google it using the title of the article I listed. It’s a pretty lengthy column.

The article seemed particularly critical of Carrie for allowing her career to be controlled too much by American Idol and Record Company powers, and the writer primarily cited her recent videos and TV specials as a blatant turn toward pop at the expense of being “someone who really could be a Country singer”.

Does anyone know if American Idol really has that much control over their contest winners?

jenny please do us all a favor and grow up

Carrie appeals to me because her music aspires me to make the world a better place

I am in college right now she makes me feel like i can succeed at anything i work hard towards.

a friend of mine told me that she was going through hardship with money as well as her family was to so they where just giving up on everything when they where driving home and heard Carrie’s new song temporary home. She told me it made her family feel like where that at right now is just temporary.

The only reason Taylor swift does not appeal to me is because all she writes about in her songs is boys. sorry it just doesn’t do anything for me. i want my music to make me feel like i can do better and that i can be a better person.

  • Robin says:

    Posted: January 8th, 2010 at 2:35 pm

D Trotter - I found the story and I actually had read it, but from another source. First off, I think everything about this article is off base (including his ramblings about Swift), but I’ll leave that for another conversation.

No - American Idol does not have that kind of control over their winners. Example: American Idol and the pop portion of Arista’s label pushed Carrie to re-mix her music (starting way back with album #1) for pop radio airplay. They swore that if she did not re-mix “Before He Cheats” it would not get played on pop radio. She stuck to her guns and her country label supported that decision and it was played on pop radio anway.

Because Carrie’s music does lean heavily towards pop/rock country, her songs are going to have more of a chance of crossing over “as is” than say George Strait as is. They pushed her to add straight pop songs to album #2 just like “Some Hearts” and she refused. Instead she choose to “go more country”.

So, while she does have alot of respect for AI and has worked with some people on seperate projects like her variety show, they do not control her music. They didn’t control Kelly’s either and look what a fight she had selling album #3. But, in the end, Kelly released what she wanted to, but just didn’t have a huge success with it.

Carrie’s hope for the variety show was to bring back that time in entertainment that was owned by Barbara Mandress and Hew Haw. While she works with AI (to some degree), they do not own her and that is clearly stated in the type of music she continues to release.

Carrie is the only reason I listen to country music. Jenny..if nothing about Carrie interests you then why are you even reading about her and posting mean comments. Congratulations, Carrie for winning Favorite Country Artist at the PCAs. I was so happy for you. You are an amazing talent with a great personality and beautiful voice. I can’t wait to see you on How I Met Your Mother! You will be great on that show! I love that you are just yourself and not trying to be anyone else. It makes you special and a superstar!!! Have a great 2010…hope to see you on tour!

  • Robin says:

    Posted: January 8th, 2010 at 4:24 pm

D J - If Carrie is the “only” reason you are listening to country music, then you are missing alot of great stuff. Even if you prefer her stylings of country to the more traditional country, then acts like Jason Aldean and Sugarland should still be of interest to you. Put down the Carrie Underwood CD and turn on the radio (not that that’s the best place to find great country music, but is the most accessible). She desires to promote a genre of music she loves.

    D.Trotter

Thanks for bringing my attention to an article written by Jim Putnam (publisher) of The Colton Point Times-Birthplace of Religious Freedom in America. The title of the article is; Taylor Swift Carries Country Music Industry but may soon be lost to Pop.

The author of this piece is expressing his opinion and only his opinion and only once references a quote from the NY Times..no other sources are mentioned.

In a nut shell, he says that Taylor is definitely a Pop artist and that ‘country’ was just a stepping stone, and that’s OK because she did it on her own with alittle help from her mom.

Carrie on the other hand is being pushed into Pop by the American Idol Mafia (my term)and gives the Holiday Special as evidence of that..by citing her outfits, skits, even ‘black group singers’skit. He states that both Kelly Clarkson and Carrie are country artists being pushed into Pop by AIM (wonder if Kelly knows that?).

So he’s not lamenting country artists going Pop..it’s how they do it…

Needless to say there is not 1 comment in response to his article…But do read it. If nothing else you might get a chuckle out of it, or the urge to (symbolically) slap the author up the side of the head.. or both.

Just goes to show anyone can write an article… you need no research, sources, or expertise…well maybe one… it’s called ‘verbal diarhea’.

  • D Trotter says:

    Posted: January 10th, 2010 at 4:02 pm

That’s pretty much the feeling I had, Kate. Part of me can’t stand this guy but I wasn’t totally in disagreement either.

I do believe Ms Swift has charted her own direction and will pretty much go where she wants to go. (I wouldn’t be shocked if it is more toward some pop/rock/emo/country hybrid. On the other hand, she could come back with a bunch of Country songs in the vein of “Crazier”, “Come In With the Rain”, “15″ and The Best Day”. Time will tell.)

I also agree with his suggestion that a lot of Record Execs may try to influence their artists to follow Taylor’s lead to Pop (and mega-sales) … and that could be a real shame.

The stuff about Carrie, who I think is just a terrific artist, is what I was trying to figure out — I tend to think it’s just this guy’s speculation/fantasy/nightmare but I really don’t know how much control the American Idol powers and the Record Company Contracts have over their artist’s directions. I HOPE not as much as he suggests.

Jen you`re getting redder and redder of jealousy because Carrie is debuting her acting role soon. Deal with it and get over it. There is nothing really you can do to stop it but you dont have to watch it. You either get busy studying or watch TS concert or listen to her music. Really simple solution. We were ok when our least favourite artist got a role in one of the episodes of CSI. So you sure can do the same. Carrie is famous for her amazing voice and one of the best vocalist out there and maybe the best there is; unbelievably sound like a record when singing live and the best voice live ; won lots and lots of awards, a member of the OPRY, beautiful, generous and educated. She has huge fan base from all ages I bet you`re bursting with anger right now because youj ust cant accept it. Well deal with it. We are proud of her and love her. I bet you feel the same way about TS so it`s ok; It`s better for you to stay at TS blog so you dont get stressed out and become a jealous and nasty fan. You should stay where you belong. Bye and best wishes.

I have never once heard carrie say a negative comment about anyone not even her exes and if you asked her she would probably to all of us it was okay that not everyone is a fan of hers and that we are entitled to our opinions. Carrie Underwood is so overrated. She would be nothing without American Idol…period.

Barb b i agree play on is her best so far you can hear the maturity in her songs. She said in an interview recently that at this point in her career she can focus on the music not the sales of an album looking forward to see what the future holds for her

Actually, I don’t think her voice is anything out of this world. It’s okay but I’ve heard better. And I don’t like her songs at all, they are very boring and not worth listening to more than once…with the exception of Jesus Take the Wheel. She doesn’t have it in her to produce hit songs.

Funny Veeta - Carrie has produced ten #1 country hit songs and 1 pop #1 hit song. Every single that she has written and released becamse a #1 HIT SONG.

She doesn’t re-mix her music for pop radio so only the more pop rock/country songs that she releases will cross over. She is a country singer. If they crossover as is, then she’s good with it. She does not manipulate her music for the sake of money.

To be such a “boring” artist she was able to sell more tickets than any other women in country music last year and more than any country artist last year than Kenny Chesney. The two of them were the only country artists to sell more than a million concert seats.

She has the #1 country album of the decade, so there are alot of folks that don’t think she’s boring. You know, “boring” is absolutely subjective. Off key and out of tune, not so much.

“more than any country artist period last year other than Kenny Chesney.”
