Carrie Underwood Knew Secret Would Spread Fast
Ah, the good ol' Internet. It can be a blessing and a curse. Especially when you're living the life of a celebrity with every move chronicled a million times over. Remember when word got out that Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher were engaged? The story allegedly surfaced after a friend of Fisher's had something about it on his Twitter page. So anyone who was following that guy got to read, "Congratulations to Mike Fisher and Carrie Underwood! We just got the call at our family Christmas get-together." The Ottawa newspapers got a hold of that news and ran with it. Then the next day Underwood's publicist confirmed the couple's engagement.
When Underwood was on the air with an Ottawa radio station last weekend, she admitted that she knew word would travel super-fast. "The night it happened we had to call everybody quickly because we knew the news would get out pretty quick and within two hours someone had texted Mike and it was like, 'Yeah, your little secret is out,'" she said. So their "little secret" was really only secret for a couple of hours before the rest of the world was in on it.
It also seems like the more personal the news is, the faster it travels. I remember how quickly the news of Keith Urban's engagement and then Nicole Kidman's pregnancy seemed to get out. Same with Brad Paisley and his wife and their boys. And Kenny Chesney and his marriage and annulment. And so on.
With everyone so hyper-involved with social networking and micro-blogging, I can only imagine what will happen when Underwood and Fisher decide to start a family. Will the OB nurse tweet the news? Will the cashier who sells them a pregnancy test turn right around and update her Facebook status about it?

Peacock Queen says:
These people are artists. They have a job that is supposed to enrich our lives (and it does, very much). But there is way too much over-the-top obsession with celebrities. It would be nice to find a reasonable balance. I enjoy reading about artists, their songs, new albums, videos, charitible work, etc., but sticking our noses into their very private moments or at sensitive times is just not appropriate. News of engagements, marriages, births, break-ups, family deaths, etc. should only be released by their publicists at a time that is appropriate and reasonable and decided upon by the people involved. They are people, by the way.
Illinoiscountrygirl says:
Very well said, Peacock Queen, I agree totally. I do enjoy hearing news about celebrities, but only when they are ready to share it with us. I wouldn’t want someone spoiling my personal life.
countryiscool says:
I’m with you Peacock, not only should the celebrity get SOME privacy, but I DON’T WANT to know every personal tidbit of their life. Obsessed fans and media feed on each other like sharks.
brian griffin says:
Hey Alison- What does Taylor Swift think of this? Maybe your next blog entry will tell us.
countryiscool says:
Don’t encourage her brian, lol I for one don’t CARE what TS thinks of it.
Netteo says:
Peacock is correct! Carrie once called Twitter something like “organized stalking” & I think she is right. Can you imagine going out to eat and having people taking pictures and posting them or detailing everything you eat? Weird.
Brian - Alison seems to be trying to blog about something other then TS.
Tiffany says:
I agree also Peacock Queen. I do love to hear about Carrie and other artists…but they deserve a private life. They share so much of themselves with us at their concerts, through their music and other activities.
mand14 says:
Brian..no not necessary. are you looking for an argument?
anyway I agree with Peacock Queen too. Celebs/artists are all people..they should have some privacy in their life just like anyone else.
Michelle says:
will you taylor fans stop talking about Taylor Swift in a Carrie Underwood article god!!! Do you see Taylor in the title? nope so stop talking about Taylor when the article isn’t even talking about her IT’s Carrie Underwood article not Taylor’s and This isn’t a publicity stunt have you seen the pictures of Carrie when the ring on her finger?
yetz says:
Walter that the stupidest thing i have ever heard. Carrie is not trying to steal anything. she been dating mike for a good while. she is in love. and by the way i am sure Taylor is happy for her and will be invited to her wedding. Because in case you didn’t know Carrie and Taylor are friends.
wanda says:
if walter would take time to read something besides these blogs he would know they were friends. carrie once said that she would like to see taylor, kellie pickler and herself tour together i do believe she will be invited to the wedding as well. congrats to her and mike.
Susan says:
Sometimes you just have to go with the flow. Like it or not, our world has become smaller and smaller. People like to complain that the media - internet and otherwise, have become like stalkers. Face it, everyone has become a stalker. As long as there are people to read and talk about all of this, the stalkarazzi’s of this world will continue. If you think about it; not much has changed over the years. Maybe before the internet it was people leaning over their fences gossiping about their neighbors. Only difference now is that our “neighborhoods” have expanded. Perhaps if people focused on their own lives, their own families…but I doubt that will happen. Human nature remains the same.
jocelin says:
walter :
right..carrie is so desperate to steal the focus from taylor..that her last resort is marriage !!.. LOL..
stupidest comment ever!!….
carrie on her talent alone, steals the attention from anyone, carrie and taylor respect each other why don’t you try to have the class these ladies possess!
Carrie4 says:
That comment was so ridiculous about Carrie trying to stay in the limelight! Very rude and should not have been said. This is about Carrie and Mike who have been going together for over a year! Congrats to both of them..BTW, a person can read news quite frequently about Taylor and her new boyfriends, and all her breakups! Who cares about that stuff anyway! Carrie and Taylor are friends..why the rude comment???…this was a huge event in Carrie’s life! Agree….Carrie possesses so much talent she doesn’t need to steal anything from anyone!
DustinG says:
OMG do you people hear yourselves! Do not forget these people may be celebrities but they are like both you and I! Taylor has nothing to do with this and for trying to mention her shows how much of a child each and everyone of you for mentioning her and for mentioning “STUPID” reasons as to why Carrie is getting married Congrats to Carrie because she has found the love of her life and can we not congradulate her for that? Grow up people!
K says:
SAlthough it’s pretty well-known by now that Carrie is an intensely private and low-key person, I think it’s asking too much for huge news like the marrige of an established country star to stay private. In this age of Twitter, Myspace, Facebook, and the internet, it’s pretty much impossible for any news to stay quiet.
I do think the man who leaked the news should’ve thought about what he was doing. Didn’t he know Carrie and Mike at least well enough to respect that they wouldn’t want the news out for the world right away?
And, how did this blog get turned into a Taylor blog? I swear, some fans crack me up. Carrie is getting married, and has been getting into the spotlight a bit more with the release of “Play On.” She has been everywhere the past few months, and she’s about to start a brand-new tour that her fans are very excited about. She has more accoldes and accomplishments than most legends, and she is drop-dead gorgeous.
Taylor has had a huge year, and it appears she isn’t slowing down. She has gotten more oppertunities than most in country music, and she is very talented. She can act, write, design, and she is one of the sweetest, most humble stars around.
There is no need to compare two talented ladies who have voiced respect and admiration for one another. Don’t start drama when there isn’t any.
lady sage says:
timothy, walter, and mindy need to grow up i am a Taylor fan and i don’t diss anyone because i know Taylor respects all artist esp Carrie. Yeah in case you didn’t know their really good friends and im sure Taylor is happy for Carrie. Taylor will probably be invited to her wedding and Carrie also respects Taylor as well. so stop turning this into a war between the two their both great.
marcy says:
timothy, Walter, and Mindy Carrie said she once thought it would be cool if her and Kellie and Taylor would tour together so stop turning this into a war. they are friends and they respect each other so get over it
kristina says:
clay walker and wife had a baby girl in late december it is on his website.
kristina says:
did anyone see my post of clay walker
mand14 says:
Taylor and Carrie are friends so I don’t understand why their fans hate each other! I’m a fan of both and I’d love to see them tour together. and to juliet about the whole immature opinion thing..I somewhat take that to offense. just because you’re young doesn’t mean you have IMMATURE opinions. I’ve seen people on here who are apparently older than me and they’ve said immature things that I’d never say.
marcy says:
omg Paul yeah i bet Carrie said please propose to me mike so i can be bigger than swift. how immature are you.
Veeta says:
Nobody really cares about her, no offense. I live in NYC and go to college. I would never have heard about this engagement news if I didn’t come on CMT.com…I didn’t see news of her engagement on any NY newspapers or magazines. Maybe it’s because Carrie Underwood is strictly a country singer and outside of that, she has no appeal.
She doesn’t exactly have a great personality. She’s the typical blonde, plain and boring American and that must be why most people aren’t interested in her personal life the way they’re curious about other celebrities…
countryiscool says:
speak for yourself veeta, we know how New Yorkers are anyway, their nose up in the air and all…
livincountry says:
yeah vetta that’s kind of funny because i know you are a tayolr fan and you just describe her. lol She’s the typical blonde, plain and boring American.
wanda says:
i still think veeta has it in for carrie maybe because carrie won a talent show and veeta didn’t who knows.
michael toland says:
WELL WHERE DO I START ? I CAME HERE TO SAY ONLY ONE THING AND IM AM SURE IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO WILL SEE MY POINT,
CARRIE UNDERWOOD YOU ARE A GODDESS . TRUELY A GODDESS FROM HEAVEN. SO SO BEAUTIFUL.
hotelmotel says:
You aren’t someone until you’ve made it in New York.
michael toland says:
CONGRATS CARRIE AND MIKE ON YOUR ENGAGEMENT. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK CARRIE. AND I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT YOUR SONG TEMPORARY HOME IS SO HEART TOUCHING I SEE WHY YOU TEAR UP WHEN YOU SING IT. GOOD WORK GIRL ABSOLUTLY GREAT.
Amy says:
Taylor is blonde but that’s where the comparison ends. The girl actually has a personality that shines. Carrie is just so…blah. Again, I’m not trying to offend her or her over-sensitive fans. It’s the honest truth. She has no crossover appeal…she’s a great singer but nobody can relate to her and that’s why she will never reach the level of a Dolly Parton or Faith Hill.
Veeta says:
^How desperate can you get?
FYI, “Jon and Kate” got more media coverage than that on a daily basis. Nice try though.
Fearlessly Bad says:
Talent trumps hype any day of the week.
Peacock Queen says:
Well, where did my posts go? No matter. The fact is, there were hundreds of news markets quickly spreading the word about Carrie Underwood’s engagement. CNN, CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox News, People, Assocaited Press, In Style Magazine, MSN, Yahoo, Google, Washington Post,
Peacock Queen says:
MTV, USA Today, Us Magazine, Star Magazine, Parade, TV Guide, Brides Magazine (online), Glamour, Cosmopolitan, The Boot, Country Music News, Idol News, Baltimore Sun, WTOP, Country Weekly, NHL News, People Style Watch, National Inquirer, Billboard com, Perez Hilton, on and on, including New York Daily News and New York Times. Don’t believe me? Google it to see. Obviously, someone cares about Carrie Underwood.
countryiscool says:
I care, about Carrie that is. Taylor, not so much.
juliet says:
I think you`re too busy studying and trying to do really good at school Veeta that you missed all the news of our Carrie`s engagement news; it even broke out before the official news and it`s all over the media and magazines. She does not like publicity but she`s too famous to be ignored. But that`s ok you dont care anyway; Schooling is more impt. than the famous Carrie Underwood. More power to you Veeta and Happy New Year!
HA! says:
well i’m pretty sure out of the millions of people in NYC that someone wouldve heard about her engagement. Maybe not you but i’m sure plenty of people did. and for all the people who say shes blah, WTC?!?!!?!? she is one of the most beautiful women on EARTH!!!
and you really are full of bull if you think she did that for publicity. she’s a private person. she doesnt care about all that lime light non sense. a lot of people are like that. ex. shania twain, she is one of the most successful female artists of all time and she doesn’t like being in the spotlight all the time, and when she comes back i bet she’ll be the same way. another was michael jackson, probably the most successful singer of all time, he didnt like being in the spotlight, even before all the melesting nonsense.
juliet says:
Congratulations Carrie for winning the Favorite Country Artist at PCA. She is just glowing tonight; she is in love. Publicity stunt, not likely. I bet the haters will come up with some other reasons to appease their jealousy on famous Carrie. PLAY ON EVERYBODY!!!!
michael toland says:
WELL I DONT ABOUT ALL THAT WHO DID WHAT HYPE,WHAT I DO KNOW IS THAT HA SAYS CARRIE IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMEN IN THE WORLD.
WRONG !!!!!!
SHE IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN IN OUR SOLAR SYSTEM.
SHES A GODDESS PURE AND SIMPLE ” GODDESS “.
SORRY, THATS MY OPINION ANYWAY.
Peacock Queen says:
I couldn’t agree more, Michael Toland. I couldn’t agree more.
Robin says:
Veeta - you are definitely out of touch with what’s going on in NY. I live in Philly and work in New York City every day. I hear as much about Carrie in The City as I do Taylor. They are saying in New York the same thing they are saying in Philly if they are over the age of 19 -”Taylor sure can’t sing and her songs are childish and boring”, but she’s a cute kid.
About Carrie they are saying the same thigs if they are over the age of 19 and that is she’s beautiful and incredibly talented. In New York City they add the phrase, “but I don’t listen to country music” (which they don’t add in Philly - as Philly has a great country radio station). In New York City they definitely hear Taylor’s terrible music more since she’s all over pop radio.
But, Carrie is a country singer and Taylor is only a country “passer byer”.
Veeta says:
Whatever…I’m just telling the truth, don’t know why Carrie Underwood fans always get so defensive. The news of the two Taylor’s breaking up got more press than Carrie’s engagement, at least in all the NY media and newspapers. She may be precious in the country side but she’s not all that famous in the city. I’m 22 and I hang out with people my age. Most of them know her as “that blonde chick from American Idol.” Her music is rarely played at clubs, radio stations or music stores whereas Taylor’s music is all over the place. Just accept the fact, Taylor has the #1 selling album of the year and she is the most popular artist not only in country music but in all of music at the moment. OBVIOUSLY the media will cover her more than Carrie, it’s common sense.
Robin says:
Veeta - Like I said, you are full of it. I see just as much news on Carrie in NY as I do Taylor. Yes, Taylor is played on “POP” radio in New York and Carrie is not because Carrie is played on “Pop Country” radio which New York does not have (with the exception of two songs). So, YES Taylor is heard more on pop radio in New York, but Carrie is just as covered in the media in New York.
You are in a box in New York if you don’t see Carrie covered in the New York media. Carrie’s concert at Madison Square Garden sold out.
And, there is no way, “You Belong with Me” or any other Taylor pop songs are played in New York clubs. She has POP songs, not DANCE songs.
Robin says:
And, Veeta hun, Paris Hilton has already proven to the rest of the world that not everyone in New York is on top of their game.
Don’t hit your head as you pass under the subway sign.
HA! says:
haha sorry michael toland, i will agree she is the sexiest woman in the solar system!
barb b says:
hey veeta i read an article about john mayer and taylor
go read it in ok magazine
Roxy says:
Have you all met all the women in the solar system? the only reason people think she is pretty is cuz she looks like a live plastic barbie doll. I would love to see her without 10 pounds of make up. Then lets see if you say she is the most beautiful woman ever. She is like a SIM..they make her that way but i’m sure under all that cake she is not that hot. Weirdos.
