Kenny Chesney and Girfriend in Puppy Love

Posted: December 29th, 2009 at 12:17 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Molly and Dolly. Those are the names of two teacup Maltipoo sisters that Kenny Chesney and his girlfriend, Amy Colley, brought home from a breeder in Bardstown, Ky., earlier this month. The breeder, Cathy Adamson, had no idea who Chesney was, other than some guy with puppies crawling all over him licking his face. Adamson picked up the couple at the local airport and brought them back to her store/house to check out the pups. The original idea was for Chesney to buy Colley a puppy for Christmas, but when they got there, Chesney said, "Let's get two." Awww. The dogs are kind of a designer mix of Maltese and poodle but super, super tiny, as you can see by Adamson's photos. Right now, the pups are only about 23 ounces each (and since they went for around $2,500 a pup, these little fluff balls rang up close to $100 an ounce). Fully grown, these dogs will only get to be about four pounds, which will make them easy to have around the tour bus.

That’s funny that the breeder had no idea who Kenny was! The puppies are cute, really cute, and I can see how Kenny would get these for his gal. But I would also like to see Kenny go to a shelter and adopt a homeless dog that is destined for euthanasia and set an example for other country music artists/fans to follow.

Wow. So much hate in these comments. There’s nothing wrong with buying. I mean hello, that is why there are pet stores. Granted all 3 of my cats are cats that were found on the streets as babies but I have a lot of friends who buy their puppies from a breeder. Sometimes you need a specific dog and you just can’t find them anywhere to adopt.

Oh and just so ya know, depending on where you live, the animal shelters won’t kill the animals unless they are really sick. The shelters by me have a no kill policy and keep all animals until they are adopted.

People who judge are wrong, where do they think the unwanted puppies and kittens go to when the breeder can’t sell them? Most end up either dumped or dropped off at the local shelter anyway so there really isn’t much of a difference is there?

This is awful! Boycott puppy mills!!!!! Thousands of loving animals are dying each day. Please adopt from your local SPCA or Humane Society. I am very disappointed in Chesney

    Jessi,

Are you aware that 25% of all dogs in shelters are purebred? And that if you actually put EFFORT into searching rescues and shelters, you can find the “designer mix” (aka expensive mutt) that you want for a lot cheaper than $2,500 each? This “I have to have it right now, I don’t wanna wait” syndrome is ridiculous!

And Jean, there is a big difference between buying directly from the breeder or pet store and adopting those “dumped” dogs from a shelter (IF they’re lucky enough to get there — most dogs that a breeder can’t sell are taken out back and shot) — for one thing, if you adopt a dumped dog from a shelter, your money goes to the SHELTER, and doesn’t line the breeder’s pocket, encouraging him or her to breed yet MORE puppies, and becoming directly responsible for the death of MORE dogs in shelters.

Oh, on more thing, Jessi. You obviously have no idea that “no-kill” doesn’t mean they NEVER euthanize. Go ahead and call your local shelter and find out what their euthanasia rate is. I bet it isn’t zero.

I used to raise Great Danes because I love, LoVe, LOVE the breed. Then I became disabled thanks to a factory running me into the ground. I was informed of the amount of puppies that are abandoned, killed or left to wander on their own and I knew I HAD to promote Humane Society adoption. Please, please, PLEASE adopt a shelter dog. You’ll find no better friend for life. :) Mutts have a bit of all the good traits that you’re looking for in that full breed, and they won;t ever turn on you. They’ll appreciate you forever!!

    LOVE my mutts!!

I no longer have any full bred animals. They’re all mixed and couldn’t be sweeter or more precious!!!

Shelter dogs are ‘tested’ before they’re put up for adoption and please pay attention to the notes. Some VERY good dogs have been returned because the people didn’t read or believe the personality page on each cage.

I’ve always said I’ll never be rich because I want to salvage all of those who are struggling.

Very adorable puppies. My stepmom has bought a few puppies and dogs from breeders, and all of them have been wonderful so far. I can’t afford the hefty price of buying, so I will have to foster and rescue my fur babies when I’m ready to take in cats & dogs.

Please don’t lump all breeders into the same category. Not all are puppy mills. Yes there are some nasty places ie puppy mills etc. I have many friends who show pure breed dogs and breed them. Everyone I know gives a heath guarantee that the puppy is free from any genetic defects or sickness. Most will take the dogs back even years down the road if anything comes up. don’t buy into peta or HSUS their goal is to element owning companion animals altogether.

I think buying from a breeder or puppy mill is a morally dubious choice. Though some breeders may not sink to the puppy mill level, I think it fair to generalize that there are more responsible ways to get a pet than the way Chesney chose.

merlefan49, no reputable breeder breeds mutts, which is what these are. If he wanted a mixed breed dog, he should have supported a shelter and not a greedy backyard breeder.

    Posted: December 29th, 2009 at 4:48 pm

“mult-poos are not mutts”. First - what is a mult-poo? If you’re going to talk designer dog lingo, please get it rigth - it’s “Maltipoo” - secondly - they ARE mutts. There are two definitions for a mutt: a dog of mixed breeds or a dog of unknown breeds. A “maltipoo” is a maltese/poodle mix. Those are two different dogs bred together creating a MUTT. So you JimmyJames, are wrong. ::Trots off and flips hair at JimmyJames::

    Posted: December 29th, 2009 at 4:52 pm

Yes Alyse - it does affect me. Do you volunteer in animal rescue? Do you work at a shelter? Buying dogs from backyard breeders and mills affects us. Very often, dogs from backyard breeders are sold before the legal age limit (which in most states is 8 weeks). This is a crucial time for social development in dogs. A dog who is not properly socialized will often lead to the owners not wanting to train and socialize the dog properly - thus resulting in more dogs surrendered at shelters. We get dogs dropped off at our rescue from known puppymillers. These animals are surrendered because they are in such bad health and the miller can’t afford to vet the dogs. So yes, it does affect me.

My liking for Kenny has gone down in years. His music has just tank in my opinion, but after this my opinion on him has gone really LOW! Not only buying but buying a mutt. Shame on the breeder too for breeding mutts to begin with. I used to have a poodle/maltese mix before. I adopted her from my local shelter! See didn’t need to spend big bucks on her. She was a great dog.

Jessi - first off Pet Stores that sell puppies are horrible. Please educate yourself on puppy mills and let me know if you’d like to live in the conditions these poor dogs do and be bred over and over and over.
There’s plenty of no-kill shelters that do have to euthanize thanks to the millions of morons who don’t spay and neuter their pets and have “oops” litters or the ones trying to make a buck off their poor dogs. I know a shelter who tries everything not to and has cages stacked in the bathroom of the shelter, just so these cats and dogs can have a shot at a second life. Sometimes though no room is left and they have to put some down. It breaks their hearts but when you have no room and vet bills soaring sky high and more dogs and cats coming in every day, it has to happen.

Alyse - check out petfinder.com Sure you’ll find plenty of German Shepherds. Along with thousands of other great dogs waiting on death row or in a no kill shelter for years just to have a loving home.
There’s this thing called out-of-state adoptions. Just a few weeks ago I adopted a 15 year old lab who was almost 8 hours away from me in another state. She’s amazing! Wish I had the room and funds to take on more seniors!

Only 1 of my dogs didn’t come from a shelter or pound, she was given to us for free but that’s probably where she would have headed if we wouldn’t have taken her from the guy. Wish people would realize that while puppies are cute, they are a LOT of work.

Hope these pups are holy terrors for Kenny.

Give me a break! All of you that are looking down through your noses at Kenny make me laugh. You are so loud mouthed about puppy mills and such, when in reality, you have NO idea what you are talking about. If this woman went and picked them up and dropped them back off at the airport, I highly doubt she runs a puppy mill. I AGREE about puppy mills, but this is not the case here. If this woman wants to breed and raise puppies in her home, leave her alone. This is still America, I THINK anyway. Goodness, get a life. Go out and fight for the right to life and ban abortion or feed the hungry in America or something useful. I hate to see puppies in stores or shows about puppy mills, but I don’t think this is the case here. Take a look at all the dog food companies with the high prices, like Iams and Pedigree and such, and look into their research labs. That will make you cry, believe me! I may be a bit biased on the subject as I have bred and home raised a few litters of shih tzu over the past 10 years, and I mean a few, maybe 4. They are my pets, the moms and dads, and the puppies are in WONDERFUL homes and will never be found in a pound. You are lumping reputable people in with trash. Get off Kenny’s back and first, get a life, second, find something real to moan about, and third, go adopt a puppy at your local shelter. Jeez, can anyone do anything in this “land of the free” without being critized for it. Good luck to you Kenny, they are absolutely adorable!!!

  • Anna says:

    Posted: December 30th, 2009 at 8:29 am

    Mare,

Please educate yourself on “backyard breeders” — they do just as much, if not more, to contribute to pet overpopulation as puppy mills. They will breed any two dogs together to create a litter of puppies to sell. They don’t test for health or temperament issues, and that’s why people have dogs that drop dead of heart disease at two years old.

And for EVERY puppy that is produced by a puppy mill or backyard breeder, another dog in a shelter dies. Before you breed another litter, go spend ONE DAY in a shelter, holding the dogs that are about to be walked down to the euthanasia room.

I don’t know about you, but every time I volunteer, I leave the shelter in tears.

    Hey,
I realize all of you that are complaining about these dogs are PERFECT, but you need a life. So what if he buys a couple of puppies for his girlfriend. With everything going on in the world, where Kenny gets his dogs from doesn’t even rank in the top 100.

Yes, there are a lot of pets in shelters that need love. Yes it is a tragedy.

Kenny, hope you and Amy enjoy your puppies. They are very cute. Merry Christmas.

  • timcun says:

    Posted: December 30th, 2009 at 10:21 am

Maybe Kenny’s girlfriend wanted a Maltipoo puppy so he bought her two for Christmas. It’s really no ones business but theirs. He was probably just trying to make her happy. I have a feeling that he would rather make her happy than the people posting on these blogs.

  • Lee says:

    Posted: December 30th, 2009 at 10:32 am

In the eyes of some of you, Kenny can do no wrong, so trying to explain what he did is like talking to a wall. If you EDUCATE yourself about puppy mills, backyard breeders, actual “breeds” of dogs recognized by the AKC, and pet overpopulation, you’ll understand why this purchase is so controversial. EDUCATE YOURSELF!

  • timcun says:

    Posted: December 30th, 2009 at 11:09 am

I understand about puppy mills and think they’re horrible. If I was going to get a dog or cat it would be from an animal shelter. But I think Kenny was just trying to make his girlfriend happy and get her what she wanted for Christmas. I don’t think he’s a bad person for doing that..

  • Jess says:

    Posted: December 30th, 2009 at 11:14 am

Ok…just leave the guy alone! It’s his business - NOT mine, NOT yours, NOT anyone’s business - JUST HIS and HIS Girlfriend’s business. If they wanted to buy the puppies from a breeder thats fine, if they wanted to buy it from a shelter they would have bought the puppies from a shelter. This is what’s wrong with today’s society, people are sticking their noses into other people’s business.

For the record, I have adopted my animals from a shelter and I have bought them from someone who was a breeder (a very long time ago). So I see both sides of it. It seems this topic is out of control. The world would be a better place if everyone would mind their own business. Let Kenny do what he thinks is right - he’s a grown man, let him live his life.

  • Big Bully says:

    Posted: December 30th, 2009 at 1:49 pm

You’re wrong Jess! It’s not just his business. It’s everyones business! Starting with him and the author of this blog. He a pop culture celebrity so everything is fair game. There are many ways to make his girlfriend happy, but not when you are talking about living animals. So he could’ve just as well went to a shelter with his girlfriend, and not only made her happy, but also maybe saved a life or two. But I understand his decsision, he is the one who wants to be the center of attention no matter the cost. If he wanted it to be about the dogs or his girlfriend Amy “Colley”, he would’ve went to a shelter and found a “Collie” or Collie mix. That would have been not only clever, but compassionate, and would’ve garnered him nothing but praise. I guess this all backfired, and he’s turned out top be the loser. Maybe a huge donation to the American Humane Society would be in order right about now. For the animals, and not for his damage control.

I hate dogs. Kenny…live how you want to!!! Love your music and glad you could make your girl happy. That’s the problem with people today. They think just because they believe something that everyone else should. In that case, I’m a Christian. Do we wanna get that preaching started?

  • mg says:

    Posted: December 30th, 2009 at 5:08 pm

“Big Bully” your name says it all! Kenny does not have to be the center of attention and never has. He is a very private person most of the time. You very rarely hear anything about him and his girl or anything else for that matter. Kenny does not parade his contributions to the media like some other stars…Rascal Flatts/Taylor Swift and others. He did something nice for his girl and now is being heavily critizied here. What a shame!! I bet a lot of other artists have bought puppies from breeders. And, as long as it is a reputable breeder, I really don’t see what the problem is…yes, I do…it is all the people out there that are not responsible pet owners and don’t have their pets spayed or nuetered!!!

  • Mare says:

    Posted: December 30th, 2009 at 6:27 pm

Hey Anna, you have some research to do yourself. if I am selling AKC shih tzu puppies, I have paid my dues and give the buyers lifetime guarantees on every one of them. It’s a personal choice and the people who buy AKC or maltipoos or whatever, should not have the weight of the world and the homeless dogs put on their shoulders. It’s unfair. Good luck to you!

  • Deb says:

    Posted: December 31st, 2009 at 2:29 am

I think this is the craziest thing I’ve heard in a long time my goodness if she wanted a dog a little poodle breed than they went to the right place to get one, I wanted a full blooded AKC registered boxer breed so I went to a boxer breeder to get it. If you want a Ford F150 you go to a Ford dealer what is the big deal know one knows for sure if she didn’t go to the shelter where she lived maybe she did and didn’t find what she wanted.

One more thing I don’t understand is according to the breeders web site lilpoodles.com (it is not a puppie mill or backyard breeder) it says discreet & confidential if your a celebrity I know she didn’t realize who Kenny is but she should have never ran her mouth just because Amy is the one who bought the dogs didn’t give her the right to blab that Kenny was even their. It sounds more to me like that Kenny was just a long for the ride to let his girlfriend pick out her Christmas present. If I were a celebrity I’d think twice about buying a dog from her.

Why are all you downers so worried about what Kenny does?

  • sally65 says:

    Posted: December 31st, 2009 at 7:18 pm

Let’s stop with the judgments. I work with rescue groups and personally believe adopting dogs or cats who have been abandoned is the compassionate and humane way to go. There are responsible breeders ad irresponsible breeders. Puppy mills and selling through stores are irresponsible.

In this case, let’s not judge Kenny Chesney or his girlfriend. His intentions were pure. Yes, wish they were better educated on the plight of homeless pets in the nation but they are not. That doesn’t make them bad people, just uninformed. I am sure the maltipoos they purchased will be well taken care of, and perhaps threw this firestorm of criticism, they will be more informed.

In the meantime, for those of us who believe in adoption rather than purchasing purebreeds, let’s stop the harshness, and bring light on the subject. Work our networks, and enlighten rather than criticize.

For those of you who don’t understand the problem, take some time and do the research.

I’m surprised after what happened a few years back, with Rena that Kenny comes out in the day time much less “Heaven Forbid” buy his girlfriend two dogs. I adopted a 6 yr. old bassett-hound from my local humane association this past year & he is just like one of my kids. I wouldn’t trade nothing for him. But there is alot that goes into adopting an animal like size, weight, energy level, health, etc. Everyone is putting Kenny down for spending $$$ on two adorable puppies. Those puppies will be better cared for than most people’s kids that are trashing him. If anyone would read up on his charity organizations, he is very giving. He gives donations to the Nashville Humane Association, how do you know he doesn’t give to other animal related charities?? He also gives to St. Judes Childrens Hospial. When & if he decides to have kids…are you all going to judge him if he decides to have his own child or adopt? Come on!! He is one of the most giving stars around these days. He bought his girlfriend a couple of gorgeous puppies but who is to say he doesn’t have any other animals at home that he rescued from a shelter like his black lab “Daisy” that resides at his mom’s while he’s on the road every year. Don’t trash him, you don’t know him! If he hadn’t bought these puppies then someone else would have.

We did indeed buy our Golden Retriever from a Private Breeder and it took us a while to find the perfect one. We then breed and sold our puppies to wonderful families. We kept one of the puppies with No intention of breeding her and when our mommy Golden died suddenly from cancer. We adopted our little “Gunner” from a Rescue Program- “Leave No Pet Behind” —– we are not even sure what his mix is but he is an ANGEL from God. So we have been at both sides, I truly believe that there are so many dogs out there that need and deserve a GOOD life. So what ever way you go— JUST LOVE YOUR PET !!!!!!!!!

Can’t understand why people buy from a breeder or pet store. With buying a puppy all your doing is puting more dogs in the world. Get your animals from a SHELTER. Shame on the people that breed animals, and the puppy mills. All should be shut down for good…..

They are soooo cute! I have a yorkie-poo….and no I didn’t purchase from a breeder, but a lady who had bought him and couldn’t keep him. They are good dogs….very sweet and who can resist those faces. I do think it’s hilarious the breeder didn’t know it was him until he left….I had to the chance to meet Kenny at a concert and he is very down to earth, and who’s to judge someone’s choise of a pet. :-)

As an owner of Two Rescue Dogs that are Masculine and one Full Blooded as you all would label Breeder/Puppy Mill Dog Purchase (we call it our “FuFu” Dog) that I spent the $$$ on, like children none are better than the other. I LOVE them! I think if you have educated yourself & the personality to pick dogs that will co-exist & fit your lifestyles then who r u all 2 judge? Everyone has a Band Wagon their on, don’t they? The truth is U REALLY DO NOT Know KENNY muchless “Amy” and if u do my question would b do u really know them? And if u think so, then why do you think it’s ok to disrespect them and question them? Last I recall they are of legal ages and really Do NOT Need your permission or approval, so you have an opinion don’t we ALL. Kenny just remember opinions and advice are about the same. Not all are as well intended as they would like to think
