Lilith Fair Welcomes Women in Country Music
I never went to Lilith Fair back in the late '90s in its heyday. I liked the artists but not enough to endure a sweltering sun and high festival prices. But now it's back after a decade of resting and/or revamping, and the best news is, they've rounded up some country stars this time. Miranda Lambert, Emmylou Harris and Sugarland will all be there representing the genre as the tour winds its way through major cities in the U.S., such as Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Dallas, and across the pond, too. Those artists are reason enough for country fans to go to what's being billed as a celebration of women in music.
However I could think of at least a dozen more country singers I'd love to see at this girl-power fest, starting with Ashton Shepherd and Carrie Underwood right on down to Faith Hill, Gretchen Wilson and Taylor Swift. I know when the Dixie Chicks played Lilith Fair a decade ago, they found an eager audience outside of country music fans. So really, everybody wins. I don't think the list of artists is a done deal yet so I'm going to keep my fingers crossed.
But there's another part of Lilith Fair that I think is going to be huge, and that's the little talent contest they'll be doing at the shows. I love talent shows not only because they find new talent but because they teach budding artists about stage presence. And they weed out the great performers from the merely great singers. So this Lilith Local Talent Search will help find the up and coming hotshot singer or musician with the most potential. God willing, we won't have to wait another 11 years to see that girl on stage at the next series of Lilith Fair shows.
