Taylor Swift Models Over-the-Top Fashion for NYT

Posted: December 8th, 2009 at 4:05 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Taylor SwiftWho do the fashionistas at The New York Times think we are? I mean, sure, Taylor Swift fans can scrape together the money to buy CDs, concert tickets and maybe one of those Love Love Love leather bracelets. But a $6,000 bolero from Chanel? Come on. I suppose Swift is just playing the role of a model in this photo gallery, as opposed to a country singer. But still, you'd think the editors would consider the timing of a piece like this. A terrible economy with unemployment and home foreclosures at all-time highs is hardly a good time for a $14,135 Chanel dress, an $11,630 chandelier overlay skirt or a $975 Jil Sander dress. The most affordable thing in this gallery is a Prada shirt for $560. And the most realistic thing about this piece is the Q&A with Swift that comes after the pictures.

I agree with you Alison. I don’t think these people live in the real world. I could fill my closet with the $560 that one Prada shirt costs..

yes with the economy like it is I do love the way taylor dresses very casual even in her shows she is wearing the same dresses and everything from the first concert she did at the start of the fearless tour, she could have went and got more exspensive clothes but she didn’t that is onee of the reasons i love her!!!! in this article taylor is wearing what the people doing the shoot want her to not because she owns it. iam very glad that taylor stays down to earth with what she wears not like others!!taylor is such a awsome role model!!!

Not very many people could pull this off she is stunning in these pictures.I could see Faith Hill or Nichole Kidman do this look also you have to have the attitude for this and all three do.As far as the price of the clothes I bet you could find similar ones cheaper. I love the photo shoot very cool reminds me of the 60s. Your awesome Taylor!!!

I’m sure they will throw her a bone when she needs a funky get up. I like Taylor in anything. She’s hot in a weird kinda way.

Taylor may have wanted to try a new look…but I hope she says “never again” - those colors aren’t right for anyone.

…the dress prices don’t really matter…they are so ugly that nobody will buy them anyways.

Taylor has done wild shoots before, totally willing to go way, way out there.

“IT’S FASHION!” she says. “YOU GO FOR IT!”

But I don’t think this shoot did her justice. Some of the ones she did in England were worthy of Vogue covers, but this made look like Barbie after a bad night.

But check out those comments after the article!

Now isn’t that odd? New York Times readers tend to be sophisticated, cultured and extremely intelligent … and not usually Country music fans! Yet these collective posts are the most insightful, effusive, and consistently positive comments on a Taylor story I’ve seen in some time. How refreshing for fans!

I definitely think many fashion designers and magazines are ridiculous with their over-the-top and crazy pricey products, but as someone pointed out, it’s probably not up to Taylor to decide what the magazine wants to promote.
I thought the pics were kinda weird, but I think that proves how down to earth Taylor really is when you usually see her. Usually she looks way better like a model in photoshoots, but this one was on the magazine.

That’s a little harsh. It’s extreme fashion and, by design, it’s expensive. Even when the economy is normal most people can’t afford those clothes.

Take it for what it is: a superficial fashion shoot featuring photogenic music star.

Plus, even with a bad economy must everything be about economic gloom and doom?

I agree with you rkw. It’s just a fashion shoot. Why does everything have to be so over analyzed? What if she had a shoot in a bunch of different sporting uniforms? Would people actually think she wears those on a regular basis (or at all)? It’s just fashion photos and not supposed to be about her personal style. Breathe people. I’m sure you can find something better to critique.

Ugh…people need to stop making fools out of themselves. Picking on a 19 year old for ANY move she makes is quite pathetic and wreaks of jealousy. Grow up…

Taylor is a pretty girl, but the pictures and clothes were just all-around odd.
As everyone has mentioned, Taylor didn’t chose to wear these high-designer outfits, and these designers don’t live in the real world. However, the small percentage of individuals who do model and wear these clothes don’t live in reality, either.

Taylor may be down-to-earth and real, but she has millions of dollars and can afford to buy whatever she wants or go wherever she chooses in the world at any time.

Anyone who can do that does not live in the real world, whether they want you to believe it or not. It’s like Alan Jackson singing about small-town values and average “country boys” then showing his multi-million dollar mansion.

“Now isn’t that odd? New York Times readers tend to be sophisticated, cultured and extremely intelligent … and not usually Country music fans!”

Now people have retorted to degrading an entire genre of fans just to bring Taylor’s cred up. How nice.

D Trotter, some of these people wouldn’t know “sophisticated” if it hit them in the face. Every blog about Taylor, you look down and see the same bunch of people picking on every and anything she does. Some of them try to come off as mature by giving her back-handed compliments. It just amuses me that a 19 year old girl has more maturity than all these people combined. That’s why she is who she is and they are who they are…nobodies :)

    but she has no talent.

  • D Trotter says:

    Posted: December 10th, 2009 at 12:52 am

K, what point are making, quoting my blog. Do you disagree that the urbane readership of the NYT is no hotbed of Country fans? Just because they aren’t, how does that become a remark that degrades an “entire genre of fans”? Care to explain?

Just for the record, I didn’t say anything about Taylor. I was only talking about the ridiculous price of the clothes and the fact that they were ugly to boot……….

Amy - looking down through this I don’t really see anybody critisizing her that is normally commenting on these blogs. Who exactly are you talking about?
