No Winners at Grammy Nominations Show

No winners. That was what continued to strike me about the Grammy Nominations Live on CBS last night (Dec. 2). They kept trotting out stars to make the announcements, but the announcements were just the list of nominees. And no winners meant no acceptances speeches. And let's face it, without acceptance speeches and their ensuing controversy, the show just kind of fell flat. There were a few bright spots, though. Sugarland, obviously. They played "Coming Home" from an stage on a plaza outside the theatre. The song is one Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush wrote together for their Gold and Green holiday album. For me, it was the best performance of the night for a lot of reasons. The most important one being, who knew Nettles could play the piano? The tight backing band made room for a full choir at the end of the song, which was a very moving touch.

It was also nice to see Dwight Yoakam. He was only a presenter but he still has a way about him that makes him seem so much cooler than the rest of us. Like a little self-deprecating humor when he said that he'd been nominated for 21 Grammy awards but had only won two. And when he announced the list for Country Duo or Group, how he said, "In the absence of the Dixie Chicks, these are the nominees."

I will end this round-up by saying, out loud, that I loved Nick Jonas' performance. He sang with his new band, the Administration, and they did the title track from the album he recently recorded in Nashville, Who I Am. (No, it's not country.) But I think the youngest member of the Jonas Brothers has the potential to steal America's hearts much like Michael Jackson did all those years ago.

I just think having a whole show to announce the nominees is kind of unnecessary. But congrats to all the country nominees and I’m looking forward to the real show in January.

I agree Katie. I think the networks are grasping for ratings and think that anything to do with music or award shows will pull them in, even if it’s just announcing the nominees. I didn’t watch the show…………………….

(I’m adding a period at the end of my last sentence for however many times I had to submit this message before it actually posted. I sure wish they would fix this web site. I can’t be the only one having this problem.)

Sugarland was THE ONLY reason I tuned in..and they certainly delivered! (as usual) They Looked and SOUNDED AMAZING!!! and Thank you for not mentioning or gushing “Swift-ly” about a certain young adult who drives all of us over the age of “Fifteen” nuts.. :)

As Kate pointed out, this show is unneccesary… for those who follow all sub genres. It’s all about the ratings. They started to drop off a few years back, so the organizers put this show together for the Pop culture crowd, who need more of an entertainment package to keep them interested in the music.

Even on Grammy day, I typically pay more attention to Internet coverage than I do the show itself. Much more there to draw my attention.
