Johnny Cash, Keith Urban Compete for a Grammy

Posted: December 3rd, 2009 at 2:12 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Johnny CashWhen people are nominated for an award posthumously, I always wonder what they would've thought. Would they be honored? Or indifferent? And I'm so curious what the very-much-alive nominees think about being in a category with the faithful departed. So in the very last category in the official list of Grammy nominations, I discovered that Johnny Cash and Keith Urban are both up for best long form music video, described as "video album packages of more than one song or track." Which artist do you think deserves to win: Cash for Johnny Cash's America? Or Urban for Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy World Tour Live? Or should the Beatles take home the prize for The Beatles Love -- All Together Now? I have my favorites but would love to know how you think it will play out.

Is this a serious question? Urban is the obvious choice. Cash and The Beatles are being recycled to make money. They shouldn’t be contenders for any contemporary awards…unless they’ve performed live recently, or recorded a new album. I’m pretty sure those are physical impossibilities, but then I’m no authority on the time-space continuum. (See Stephen Hawking)

They shouldn’t have been nominated. Then again, maybe they’re just supposed to round out the category since no other current musician/artist seems to have been good enough to be nominated. It’s like when a company hires internally - they advertise the position in the paper b/c they are required by law, but no one else is actually being considered.

I feel much better about this now.

    PJ,
Google Johnny Cash America the video that came up is a bio show about him. Maybe one he is nominated for is a different one. But after watch the clip of it online Cash is the obvious choice. Both he and the Beatles are icons who affected all walks of life.

From the looks of the clips of the nominated videos, I’ve found it looks like Keith is the one that was added to round out the category. There are other nominees beside Cash, The Beatles and Keith. You can find them on youtube by searching for them there.

Go Keith! That dvd truly gives people who have never been to a Keith Urban show an idea of what it is like. The CMA voters should have watched that dvd before handing the Entertainer of the Year award to Taylor. His shows are a true experience! Go Keith! I hope that he wins all four Grammys that he is up for.

Keith Urban all the way! That DVD is an awesome way for fans to relive his most amazing live experience. I could watch over and over again and never tire. That man is a true entertainer and I suggest that those who have never seen him, open up your music boundaries, and experience this musical marvel! He really is outstanding. Much better live than his cd’s…hope his next cd is a “live” cd.

The thing is Keith Urban won’t mind who wins, because Johnny Cash and the Beatles are his hero’s in music, so he’ll be fairly chuffed that they are in the nominee mix for best long form video … Should KU win he’ll be very humble, enough to show his respect for this fellow nominee’s even though they can’t be there with him - what a dream that would have been for Keith Urban … I’m not sure whether Cash or The Beatles would think, regardless of who wins, they weren’t really into the video age … But for me LP&TWCWT is #1 and I’d just like to mention that Keith Urban is the only Australian nominated for a Grammy in 2009 … 4 Grammy’s to be precise, and that’s amazing, but not as near amazing as a Keith Urban concert experience - I’M URBAN PROUD !!!

Cashfan55 says “Without Cash half the singers wouldn’t be in the business. It’s Cash all the way!!”

I highly doubt it. Without Cash, music might have been different, but I hardly think half of today’s singers owe their careers in any real way to Johnny Cash. People made money singing before Johnny Cash had a career. People became “stars” before Cash had a career. Perhaps had there been no Cash today’s singers would have had different musical influences and they might be making music that is different today. But that’s about it.

In any event, I believe the Grammy award is for “best long form music video” and not for “Person Who Made It Possible for Today’s Artists To Have Careers.” So even if today’s artists owe their careers to Cash (highly doubtful), I see no reason to think that is relevant to the question of who should win this award.

Cash! Keep it going all the way!. The package holds some great songs…including a once only release from the Cash performance at the White House. With war protests out the the streets, Cash took the White House center stage and performed, “What is Truth?” a song of listening to the voice of youth. How do ya top that?

    Cash for the Grammy!

There is a reason CASH is a legend…and that doesn’t happen to many in ANY business.

I just have to add…someday Keith may be an Urban Legend, (BIG SMILE!)

I like Keith, but I am going with 100% Cash!
