Top 10 Tracks I'm Digging Right Now

Posted: November 30th, 2009 at 10:50 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Merle HaggardThe holidays bring family together, and when said family is stuck in an only-old-country-is-good-country frame of mind, so am I. I'm not saying I believe that all the time, because God knows I love today's most mainstream stuff. But every once in a while (like twice a year when the Timeless Country Classics book of sheet music is dusted off and there is plenty of wine to go around), it's nice to hear some of the oldies so you remember where country is coming from.
"Okie From Muskogee," Merle Haggard
"Don't the Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time," Mickey Gilley
"San Antonio Stroll," Tanya Tucker
"Luckenbach, Texas," Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson
"Coal Miner's Daughter," Loretta Lynn
"Satin Sheets," Jeanne Pruett
"Country Is," Tom T. Hall
"Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man," Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn
"Who's Gonna Mow Your Grass," Buck Owens
"Talking in Your Sleep," Crystal Gayle

I would much rather have a blog about taylor than haggard. Not cuz taylor is better. She isn’t. But the Swift blogs generate interesting comments and discussions, and the blogs about has been singers tend not to. So even though I prefer Haggard over Swift, I prefer blogs about Swift over Haggard.

Good list but if you really want to get back to where country is coming from go back to the Bristol sessions in the 20’s . Then work your way to the ones you listed.

Taylor saving country music? More like Dale Watson, Amber Digby, Miss Leslie, Roger Wallace. Justin Trevino are saving it.

I actually like this blog better than the “Taylor” ones. For one reason, I’m not a fan of hers. 2nd reason is I enjoy the traditional country music more than pop country of today. I’ve seen Merle twice in concert, one of those times with with Ray Price & Willie Nelson. That was a great show. I also have seen Lorreta Lynn in concert, when she was opening for Randy Travis (my favorite!) in CT. Don’t get me wrong Taylor fans(when she was opening for Brad Paisley), I’ve seen her to, but I wasn’t all that impressed with her. I basically went to that concert to see Kellie Pickler, who by the way covers Classic country songs on tour, while Taylor does rap songs? (at least at that concert.) Seems like to me, Kellie is more country and respects country music more than Taylor….

How does a blog that doesn’t even mention Taylor turn into the dame old debate??

Her critics like to complain about all the coverage she gets (as if winning every award that isn’t nailed down doesn’t deserve some major coverage), but the fact is that Taylor is the subject of only ONE out of the last 40+ CMT blogs, same with the news stories.

Seems to be it’s more than the bloggers at fault for all the attention she gets.

So what comments and discussions do you find more interesting hotel, the ones bashing Swift, the ones complaining about her, or the ones that demonstrate how more people are interested in the Pop culture aspect of it all, rather than the music itself? Inquiring minds need to know!

Maybe more people would like swift if they didn’t hear about her all the time, she is good, but no one is good enough to be talked about that much. Get a life people!
