Let Adam Lambert's Antics Serve as a Warning

Posted: November 24th, 2009 at 3:00 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Adam LambertLet this be a warning to any singer considering how provocative to go with an awards show number: If you're a man and you make out with a man on live television, you may lose a few gigs. Good Morning America just canceled Adam Lambert's appearance because of his controversial American Music Awards performance. (He's still set to be on The Early Show and the Late Show With David Letterman so maybe they're more OK with that kind of thing.) I thought maybe I was the only one who thought his Rocky Horror-meets-soft-porn thing was too much. But now that GMA pulled the plug, I'll bet other artists will consider how far they can push the sexuality envelope. In a post-show interview Lambert explained the man-on-man kiss thusly: "Sometimes you just are in the moment. Adrenaline is a crazy, crazy, crazy feeling. All the sudden you just have this rush that comes over you, and things happen." I'm just relieved that the sexiest country music ever gets is when Carrie Underwood performs in hot pants and peignoirs.

Get a clue. This has just made him much more famous and reminded the public that his debut album comes out this week. That album is way outselling the one by goody good boy next door Kris Allen.

Some people got their panties in a twist over Elvis on Ed Sullivan 50 years ago, and he did OK.

Madonna and Britney Spears and other female artists regularly do things like this in their acts. If you’re going to cry indecency, at least admit that it’s because it’s two men doing it and not some general issue you have with this kind of thing. Because there’s no way if Madonna had done it there would be this kind of outcry.

I also thing the STD comment above should be deleted.

This will come as a surprise to some I’m sure but this country music fan is also a fan of all kinds of other music and one of those other artists I’m a huge fan of is Adam. I found nothing offensive about the performance - it’s rock and roll - it’s supposed to push buttons. He’s an incredible performer and has one of the greatest voices in all of music. This thing with GMA has done nothing but help him. GMA has turned out to be the loser while Adam will be on the Early Show/Letterman/Barbara Walters 10 Most Fascinating. Oh, and he’s on every entertainnment news program and many websites today. People are talking!! And most are supporting him. His album is fantastic. Yep, it’s possible to be a country music fan (and I’m an old school country music fan and I’m not some young teen - I’m 46) and a fan of pop/rock - I just love music and I love the crazy talent that is Adam.

This is the not best time to release an album. It will get lost in a herd of releases. Adam did what he did to promote the new album. Get you guys talking.

Let’s open our mind. It’s a big country with lots of room for a variety of styles and performers. Lambert did nothing wrong, and if you do choose to keep listening, you will find one of the most talented vocalists today. Perhaps the AMA’s did not serve to showcase the amazing talent that he is. Don’t miss out. Step up and embrace tolerance.

YOU MUST READ THE RECENT LA TIMES ARTICLE. It is fabulous because it puts the AMA performance in perspective. It mentions Elvis (his hips were blocked), the Doors (who sang about drugs and weren’t invited back), Kurt Cobain, Mick Jagger and other rockers who pushed the envelope, shocked audiences and survived. Everyone should read that article, and they will see what is really happening here. Adam is just being a rocker, he is being himself. He really ISN’T a gay icon, he’s not trying to be. Did you see his professional music video version of For Your Entertainment on his my space music yet? IT’S AWESOME. It really shows what he was trying to do. It IS art. You have to watch it. I initially had a negative response FIRST when I saw the AMA performance, but after having read the LA Times article and seeing the real music video, my mind is changed. Adam, You ARE A GENIUS!!!!

It is all about publicity, all singers ,movie stars , do it espically when they have something. they want to sell cds, movies or whatever , country artist are the same way, they may not take it to this level, like when tim mcgraw has a movie or cd , coming out there is something about him , like him losing his wedding ring or some guy causing a scene at his concert so tim picks him up and holds him for security , and you don’t think these incidents aren’planned , also the scene with taylor and kayne west , I bet if anyone knew for sure the whole incident was probably planned , but hey the more outrageous , the more people will talk and word of mouth is the best publicity there is , as they said there is no bad publicity,

It was 100% tasteless and wrong, this was NOT cable like MTV but network TV. He went beyond the boundaries and I hope the network is fined like they what happen with the Superbowl incident a few years ago.

Fluffy no the incidents with Tim were not planned and he did NOT have an album coming out when any of this came out and he was NOT on network TV either. What this guy did was beyond tastless and I hope the network gets fined big time, like with what happen with the Superbowl.

  • glo says:

THIS WAS NETWORK TV NOT CABLE some of you seem to forget that. There is limits on Network TV and they should be fined.

It wasn’t the kiss that was over the top but the act where he pushed the guys face into his crotch. 100% over the top and I hope that is the beginning of the end of his career and ABC is fined big time.

Some of you can take up for Adam all you want, but his performance was very disgracful. That type of performance should not have been allowed on tv.And the AMA’s should be ashamed for allowing it.From my understanding they did not know he was going to do all that he did,Am glad they edited his performance for the west coast. This goes to show that they need to be more alert to what is going on.I am proud that GMA canceled his performance on their show.Am disappointed that the cbs morning show would jump to get him on their show.Just a ratings thing for them.As far Carrie wearing hot pants,I see nothing wrong with that, her performance was awesome and clean, nothing disgraceful about it.

Why can’t 90% of you people posting here just come right out and say what the real issue is here…. You are homophobic! You have an issue with man on man action.
When Madonna & Britney had their big kiss, no one said anything, it was celebrated all around America. When Christina Aguilera went on several awards show a few years back & did her performance for “Dirty”, which was way more sexual than anything Adam did, no one said anything, and Madonna, well I don’t even need to say anything…. It is a double standard. If Adam had done the same exact things with a women, there would have been noooo issue.
Grow up people, it is almost the year 2010, forget your bible ways and realize that homosexuality is here to stay. Do you honestly think you’ll wake up one day, and all gays & lesbians will have seen the light and realize they’re straight? It’s not going to happen.
I am a huge country music fan, I attend every country concert that comes to my town & listen to country 95% of the time. What I can’t stand is how much homophobia there is with country music fans? I just don’t get it.
Just a couple of months ago, I was at the Keith Urban concert and my boyfriend & I were holding hands, just like all the other couples in the stadium, and the looks we got…. unbelievable, and this wasn’t even the first time this happened at a country concert.
I love my country music, but I can’t stand how homophobic most of you are.

I agre Adam is extremely talented even thouh it is not my style of music. The only issue i had with his performance was that my 14y/o daughter and 4y/o grandson was watchng so it was a bit difficult to explain to them that it was just entertainment. I don’t think abc or the ama’s would have allowed that type of show if it had been planned from the beginning due to it being a network affiliation. I have no problems with gay people because i have a brother who is gay.

Oh, come on Brenda and Marc, there was a time when Madonna pushed the envelope and challenged America’s repressed Puritan sexual hang-ups and taboos, and she walked that edge between art and pornography very precariously, but she never had to simulate oral sex to do it. And if people are watching a show with their kids, no one needs to see anyone’s face in anyone else’s crotch, whether it’s male-male, girl-girl or guy-girl. Ultimately, that’s just giving homophobes more ammunition.

Adam has got a flamboyant voice and style and he has potential to become a Bowie-esque star, but he could be making a serious miscalculation if he thinks prime time is ready for anything. Mika can sing anything Adam can sing and doesn’t need the outrage to wow people.

Get over yourselves already..why can a woman like Beyonce or even Lady Gaga do tastelss performances and get big applauds for it? Why does everyone trash Miley for her clothes but everyone thinks Taylor Lautner is hot for taking his shirt off at 17..double standards!

Honestly you need to open up your eyes a bit..this is only an issue in the U.S…the rest of the European countries actually know whats important in the world and this isnt one of them.. It’s almost 2010..when are you going to let the whole gay thing go? You guys act like your kids have never seen these things…maybe it’s time they did to realise there are alot of different people out there..stop pretending like your kid isnt have sex, there arent gays and most of all..let go of that redneck mentality.

I don’t care what they do but shows like this should be labeled for Mature Audiences only.No one under 18.Sexy is one thing Sexual is another. To me it was a foolish thing like Christina Aguilera’s Dirrty Video that was banned. Carrie Underwood stated be the same person you were on Idol and you’ll keep your fans obviously Adam Lambert didn’t pay attention to that and I’ll bet it will cost him in popularity and Fans and the only ones he’ll get to keep is the people that like their kids to watch that obscenity.

I watched the video on Youtube to see how bad it was…and wished I had used better judgement. Adam was so over the top I don’t have a word to describe how over the top he was. That “performance” was absolutely DISGUSTING. I’m not surprised at all that ABC got so many complaints or that Adam’s GMA plug was pulled. IMO, he deserved, and the fact that the other shows are letting him have his spot is pathetic. That was no performance, that was a stimulated sex act. I’m not an Adam fan…and that performance says a whole a lot about why I’m not.

And yes, WHAT is that picture doing on this site?! It should not be here. SOMEONE TAKE THAT THING DOWN!

I agree with the comment above, if it had been a man and woman I’m sure there would be no outcry. Perhaps it’s the same people making the statements that stopped Adam from winning Idol. It’s his amazing talent that should be the point not who he kisses.

I do think the performance and picture are in questionable taste, but I find the would-be censors who want to remove it far more offensive than the actual performance.

And yeah I do think a lot of the reaction (e.g., thats “VILE” et cetera) is basically pure homophobia, very thinly disguised.

It shows the mentality of the America that in order to get your records to sell you have to use sexuality. It takes a very strong artist to go on their abilities without using gimics. Everyday we are being introduced to more and more of these type of images to allow us to accept that was once unacceptable. If you cry I should be able to be “artistic” when it comes to sexuality in your performances because women artists do it, then to me it sounds immature and egotistical. I don’t need the sex in performances. Some people need to be entertained that way and they buy the records not because of the song, but the illusion that is brought about by the performance.

This performance was completly out of line and trashy. Adam Lambert has no class what so ever. What he did on stage shouldn’t even be on cable TV, let alone network. People in this country are so concerned with “tolerating” everyone, that they forget about morality. People do thinga wrong. Its a fact. What Adam did was wrong. Fact. That doesn’t make me intolerant, it means I have standards. And for the record, Christina and Madonna and Britney and the rest of them are wrong too. This show is supossed to be about music, not sex. It is really out of hand how people today think that being tolerant means tolerating EVERYTHING. Grow a backbone and stand up to something. Kudos to Taylor Swift for proving you can sell with your clothes on, and kudos to GMA for canceling that piece of trash.

People are complaining about sex in music. I disagree. Sex is one of the most important aspects of being a human, and it therefore deserves a significant place in music and art, which should deal with human concerns. That’s not to praise Lambert’s performance - which was tacky, though I don’t think in any way immoral - or to suggest that any method of incorporating sex into music is as good as any other method.

Well I wasn’t a fan of his while he was on American Idol and I am still not, in my opo this is not talent nor is he a genius, he is a wanna be porn star who should follow in the other idiots foot steps and go see Playgirl. I love my country music and I found his perfomance very offensive. I was happy when GMA cancelled his performance, I don’t watch Letterman unless a great country artist is on then and only then I will watch only the artist part and off it goes. Perhaps I am getting old but I really did find his performance so very tasteless, theres lots of kids following these people who are confused enough they sure don’t need to watch a performance like his, God help us if this is what “Art” is becoming!
