Bucky Covington Celebrates a Bloody Birthday
I've always liked a man with a good sense of humor, and if Bucky Covington's engaging personality is any indication of what to expect from his upcoming album, I'm Alright, due out next spring, it's surely a must-hear. Since he and his twin brother recently turned "32 years good," as he likes to call it, I asked him how they celebrated their birthday. He informed me that the two sat around a campfire at his new 80-acre farm and came up with the great idea of riding dirt bikes. "So, safety first, we took flashlights and duct-taped them to the front fenders," he laughed. Unfortunately, that wasn't quite enough light because Bucky crashed and hurt his left knee. Thinking on his feet, so to speak, he grabbed his nearest resource. "So I duct taped a ShamWow to my knee. It worked great, but by the time I got home, I was a pint low," he laughed. "ShamWow!"
But perhaps his biggest birthday surprise, other than his lost dog somehow finding its way home, was when he ran into Keith Urban in Nashville. As Bucky tells it, "Keith comes over to me and first of all, he calls me by my name which is a lot better than, 'Excuse me miss'" -- and then Keith sang him "Happy Birthday."
And though I could have listened to Bucky tell stories all day, I'm looking forward to his upcoming album that he assures me is a "fist-pumping good time." Luckily we don't have to wait quite that long because a five-song digital EP is available for download Tuesday (Nov. 17). A live recording from his hometown concert in Rockingham, N.C., you can preview his brand new party song, "Mexicoma," as well as his latest single and Nickelback cover, "Gotta Be Somebody," and fan favorites "A Different World," "It's Good to Be Us" and "I'll Walk." But if he ever decides to release a live comedy album, I'll be first in line for that one, too.
