Wynonna Cites CMA Winners as Personal Favorites

Posted: November 16th, 2009 at 4:39 pm  |  By: Craig Shelburne

WynonnaWynonna's critical remarks on Taylor Swift's early success caused some trouble at the CMA Awards last week. However, during a visit to the pressroom backstage during the ceremony, she cited Lady Antebellum and Darius Rucker -- who both won trophies that night -- as two of her personal favorites. Speaking about Lady A, she said, "Their voices are real -- and their harmonies. I love harmony and I love it when I can really hear someone's voice and I can vibrate to it. I resonate to it. I like the way that they sing together. I mean, they're real. They're real vocalists and real entertainers. So I'm excited about them. I love Darius. He's very down to earth and a very grateful, humble person. What a concept. We do see it all and backstage we watch to see who's kind to the limo driver and who's paying attention to the hairdresser, not just the lady giving the award. I like Darius a lot. We're going to write together."

During a brief Q&A session with reporters, both of the Judds were asked how country music has changed for the better in the last 25 years. Naomi replied, "Since you said 'for the better,' I'm going to let Wynonna take it.' After a stunned look toward her mother, Wynonna stepped up to the microphone, saying, "More people! We can access more people because you all have traded in your tape recorders for the Internet. Obviously we can go faster. I'm not always sure technical is a good thing in the studio, but it does work for the marketing and the fans to be up-to-date. That's a really interesting question. I have more things that I could say the opposite of that, but I won't."

I don’t really care what she has to say. I agree with her opinions on Darius Rucker and Lady A, but I think she is unnecessarily critical.

She’s mad because new country listeners don’t know who she is.

Once again Craig, thanks for writing about the music, instead of going for controversy like your mainstream colleague. Always a pleasure to read your perspective of things.

I agree with what she said about the Internet being a great way to access more people. I find almost all the music I listen to, through the Internet. So obviously it can work the other way, too. It’s also a great way for people to access more artists, since commercial Mainstream radio ignores 90% of those making music. If more people took advantage of that, there would probably be a whole lot less complaining going on in these blogs about the current state of Country music. I personally find it as good as it ever was.

Wyn has sour grapes because she was the youngest nominee to EOTY until Taylor came along and not only did Taylor take Wyn’s name off the record books by the nom she also won it.

Jeff - Wynonna is known to be critical about alot more than Taylor. If you were so single sighted and only see one person, you’d know that. There’s more people in the world than Taylor.

Wynonna was a disposable pop act when with the Judds and then again as a solo artist. Now, she has been disposed with, and others have taken her place. Its all mainstream, lowest common denominator entertainment. Wynonna’s music was hardly any better than the music of those she dislikes.

Well I am abit lost as I missed what ever it was Wy said, but without even knowing I probably would have agreed with her as I adore her, always have always will, God that lady can sing, she is amazing, nobody can hit the notes like Wy I don’t care what anyone says and when she gets it going and sings “No one else on earth” wow she has that growl, I just love her! The Judds were here last summer and man did they ever rock the Saddledome hot she is and always will be! Go Wy!!!

Agree w/you nikkis120! If the youngsters dont know who Wynonan is thats radios fault and loss. If she looks like a carrot then Taylor looks like a twinkie! Wynonna could acoustic outsing her which would be like nails on a chalk board for Taylor.

Wynonna is only speaking the truth while others cower from speaking because of backlash like Faith Hill took joking or not. Taylor Swift looks like something out of a horror movie and so does her singing.

Really? Is the personal attacks necessary? (of either Wynonna or Taylor)

While everyone may have an opinion of their music, talent, if they deserved awards, does it really have to come to attacking them on a personal level? I mean, people attack Wynonna for the way “she looks” without the appreciation of the heart ache she’s lived to get to where she she is physically. And, Taylor’s looks are only the outside image and don’t represent her as a person or artist. So, can we stick to talking about the person and the artists rather than reaching for physical appearance just to make someone feel bad about themselves?

Wynonna spoke the truth without naming names. But anyone with half a brain knows who she’s taking about.

Like when she said that Lady A’s voices are real and that they’re real vocalists, meaning that they don’t have to be studio enhanced in order to sound good like one female singer (and I use the term lightly) who sings flat and off-key live. Not only that, but when she sings live she takes breath after breath which becomes very distracting. I still can’t believe that she won Female Vocalist of the Year over the other nominees … the ones who actually sound good live!

make that, “the ones that actually sound good, period.”
