Take a Quiz, Country Whiz
Country music songwriters (and the singers) have always been so good at imperfect rhymes. You know, the ones that don't merely rhyme "tear" with "beer" or "love" with "above" or "boots" with "roots." And I notice these other kinds of rhymes all the time. That made me wonder how closely other people are listening. So I've come up with a list of words that almost rhyme in some of my favorite country songs. Some are old, some are new. Some have spent time on the radio, some were never released as singles. And some might actually be considered perfect rhymes. It's just that they are so thoroughly clever that they stand out to me. So many times that's what gets me about the lyrics in country songs when I think, "‘Biscuit' rhymes with ‘fixed it'?" Now that's a rhyme you'd never hear anywhere but country. See if you can name the songs that rhymed.
"Biscuit" with "Fixed It"
"Honest" with "Flawless"
"Paper plates" with "Amazin' Grace"
"Leavin'" with "Cleveland"
"Botoxed" and "Tackle box"
"Transmission" and "Gone fishin'"
"Open" with "Hopin'"
"Choking me" with "Society"
"Again" with "Best there's ever been"
"Crown" with "Sound"
"Dancing" with "Askin'"
"Cadillac" with "Boat out back"
"Mama" with "Commas"
"Steel guitar" with "PBR"
"Sangria" with "I'll see ya"
"Welcome y'all" with "Sex and alcohol"
"Before" with "Barn door"
"Coward" with "Happy hour"

Here’s a few
waving black hair with the roses so red and the lilles so fair.
Today I passed you on the street and my heart fell at your feet
cold and mean
Kind of evil make me want to Grab my sub machine
and there comes Mary,
Hair of gold and lips like cherries.
Now I’m up here in Alaska looking around for gold.
Like a crazy fool I’m a digging in this frozen ground, so cold.
