Garth Brooks Paved the Way for Taylor Swift on SNL
Taylor Swift is going to be both the host and the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this Saturday (Nov. 7). Is that even possible, for someone to perform country music AND be truly funny in the skits?
Yes. And I know this because of Garth Brooks. He did the same double duty when he was at the top of his game, and I think really surprised everyone with a sense of humor that seemed to come very naturally. Like when he's being teased backstage by the irresistibly sexy Mango (Chris Kattan). Or when Tracy Morgan is totally bad-mouthing Chris Gaines right to Garth Brooks' face. "He's a weedy beedy bing bong freak. And he's soft. He's fat. If you were that big, they'd be calling you Girth Brooks." But the very best was when Garth played Milo Jenkins, who sells his soul to the devil (Will Ferrell) to write him a hit song. Like "Fred's Slacks." It might be hard for Swift to beat that. But she has taken Garth Brooks' advice before, so I'm guessing she'll follow in his footsteps again this weekend. She told MTV she wanted to look nothing like herself. "I told all the writers, 'Don't count anything out. I want to go completely, 100 percent in.'" Then she said cast member Kristen Wiig was one of her comedic inspirations. Which really makes me hope they do a skit with Wiig as the one-upper, trying to one-up Swift. Like, "You got a songwriting deal when you were 14? I got one when I was still in my mother's womb." Or, "Both your albums went platinum four times? My albums have gone platinum, like, platinum times. Elvis was totally jealous." And they'd have to do something about Kanye. "Kanye West barged in on your VMA speech? He barges in on me more. He barges into my house, my dressing room, my car. He's obsessed with me. He thinks I'm the greatest comic of all time."

Do we really need another blog about ts!!
countrytwang says:
Did you say perform country music??
Kim says:
Why does this woman write about Taylor Swift every single day? She isn’t talented or even interesting! Would love to see more posts from the other writers with more perspective on GOOD MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!
Tommy says:
Kim with all due respect Taylor Swift has more talent in her little pinkie and is so much more interesting than you or any other artist Alison could have blogged about. Your post gives you away as being dull and ignorant.
That being said, I can’t wait for Saturday Night Live, it should be one of the better episodes and like Garth, just think how many people Taylor can reach with coutry music.
Thanks Alison, and good luck to Taylor.
Matt C says:
Alison, I disagree with the premise of this blog entry. Garth did not pave the way for Taylor, his appearance on this show was so long ago and forgotten that it has no bearing on Taylor getting the job of hosting. She was asked to host because of what she has accomplished in the last 3 years in her career, and because of her considerable comedic and acting talent and her physical beauty. Taylor Swift paved the way for Taylor Swift, in her career and in her coming appearance on SNL. To say otherwise kind of detracts from what she has accomplished on her own.
Awww says:
Aww, Allison, you get a big pay raise from Taylor Swift, errr, Santa, this year!
Brittany says:
I can NOT wait until this comes on tonight! I love Taylor Swift SO much!!! And to all you people that are dissing her, that’s fine. That’s your opinion. And maybe the person who blogs stuff on here likes Taylor, too. And honestly, what have any other artists in country music really done or are going to do that’s blog worthy? Taylor has done a lot lately, that’s why she’s always being blogged about. So please stop dissing her. Besides, if you really don’t like her, why are you reading the blogs? Taylor Swift is amazing!!! GO TAYLOR!
Allen says:
I guess the funniest skit that could happen is if they make fun of her singing(or lack of)in one form or another. Can Swift really make fun of herself or not? The question is will they have the nerve to go that far?
trink says:
Maybe they will make fun of the people who make fun of her . That to me would be flipping hillarious.
Tim M. says:
Nah, they won’t do that. It’s not nice to make fun of the majority.

Taylor was brilliant on snl….loved it!!

TAYLOR SWIFT ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR
flower says:
taylor was awsome and funny last night on snl!!!!! and her singing was GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! taylor looked so beautiful when she was singing and sounded GREAT TOO!!!!taylor was by far better than garth was, my husband is a huge garth fan and he said taylor ws much better than garth was!!!!!!taylor was AMAZING!!!!!!!!
NascarFan says:
She sounded horrible. The SNL show reviews on their website say nothing about her except that she was terrible vocally. There are references such as “made my ears bleed”, “had to mute AND leave the room”, “keep her away from the mic”. It’s so funny to see how her obsessed fans praise everything she does without being objective and actually listening to it.
flower says:
sorry but the reviews were the best this year!!!!! I do not no what your reading but on snl home page it said that last night were the highest ratings this year!!!!!go taylor you were great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NascarFan says:
Ratings and reviews are two different things. Ratings are of course high, since she has so many kids watching her. Reviews at SNL . com are terrible. Would you like for me to copy and paste some of them for you?
itchycorn says:
Dolly Parton did the host duties first, way back when her “White Limozeen” CD was burning up the charts. She was hilarious and sang so well all on one program!

I really see the logic in your argument but I think you’ve painted your strokes
Martin says:
Why is it that every time I post a comment that’s not praising Taylor, it gets deleted within an hour?…
lori says:
Martin because Alison doesn’t like her girl toy being talked about in a truthful manner. P.S. All the news stations were calling her “Pop Princess”.
MEE says:
I am sooo sick of dating dilemas of the average teenager….I like her sometimes but enough already. Her songs are pretty much the same.
Nuttyfan says:
Abigail should kick her butt for publicly talking about “giving everything”. That’s none of anyone’s business, and yet Taylor sings about it like it’s nothing. Not too cool there TayTay
Marcy says:
please play lalala song on the radio taylor! its awsome! love u marcy.
cowgirl says:
Taylor sounds like a little kid…..
that can not sing…….she stinks…….
Always Right says:
But her personality trumps her lack of talent!
S says:
So just because someone has a good personality they should be given a multi-million dollar recording contract? Gee, I know a lot of people they could sign. None of them can sing worth beans but they would fit right in with Taylor.
jon says:
She did not get a multi-million dollar recording contract. The label was small when she was signed and yes personality and singing from the heart trumps her lack of talent! For me any way.
Nuttyfan says:
The multi million dollars came from her daddy to finance her signing with a small label. It was a win-win
jon says:
Nuttyfan…Tell me where I cant read about this, I have read a lot about her but never saw anything about that. Please dont tell me someone told you. Because of the internet her story is pretty much a open book so just tell me where I can find this or is this another story like her father owned Swift Trucking.
Nuttyfan says:
Daddy is a stockbroker jon, that’s easy to confirm. Do you know how Wall Street works?
Nuttyfan says:
And where the heck did you hear the Swift Trucking thing? Did someone tell you that? And oh yeah, there’s nothing but truth on the internet…we all know that.
