Toby Keith Ballad May Get You "Cryin'"

Posted: October 30th, 2009 at 5:08 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Toby Keith's new single, "Cryin' for Me (Wayman's Song)," was written for the funeral of Wayman Tisdale, a basketball great, jazz musician and someone Keith calls "the closest walking thing I've ever seen to Jesus himself." So I don't even need to see the whole video to know how poignant it will be. It's so sad to hear Keith talk about how he's crying for himself, instead of crying because he feels sorry for Tisdale. He told CMT Insider that after he'd heard the news of Tisdale's passing, "I just reeled around in a fog. I just couldn't believe that the Lord had taken someone from us that was that good of a human being." It's a very genuine and heartfelt song, with a tender shout-out to Tisdale's signature style as Keith sings, "So play your upside-down, left-handed, backwards bass guitar and I'll see you on the other side, superstar." The video premieres here on Monday (Nov. 2), the day after All Saints' Day.

This is the most moving song I have ever heard Toby sing. You can hear the whole emotion coming thru Toby and his words. What a tribute to Wayman, I am sure he is looking down from heaven with that character smile of his and saying “thank you”.

I just lost my oldest nephew on October 4, 2009. This song fits his life that he lead here on earth. He had a way about him that people just loved. He never meet a stranger. God blessed us with him. Toby Keith blessed us with a song that will stay in our hearts forever.

Toby is at his best with this song! He is really wearing his emotions on his sleeve and I can’t wait for the video. The whole CD is great and if you do not have it yet you need to go out and get it today. This shows how great he is as an artist…taking raw emotion and putting it into words at how he was feeling at the moment. Glad he was honored with the songwriter/artist of the decade!

An absolutely beautiful tribute to a great athlete (who played for the Phoenix Suns in the mid 90’s), so AZ embraced him as an athlete, great person, and he was a tremendous asset to our community. Thanks Toby…..what a great song. Don’t know how you make it through the song, because I can’t.
    God Bless.

I heard this song today in my car and it took my breath away and made me cry. I lost my son, Troy, to Muscular Dystrophy last December. Toby is a family favorite and Troy had the chance to meet Toby in Dallas. One of the songs at my sons funeral was Should Have Been a Cowboy. Because my son loved the Dallas Cowboys and Toby Keith. We called my son “smiley” and after watching this video it seems my son and Wayman had this in common. Toby could not have spoken more from my heart! Thank you Toby!

This song will be forever played at the passing of our loved ones. I lost my best friend to MS 12 years ago and I cried for our memories at this song. Of course he’s not crying for Wayman because he is where we all belong. Thanks Toby, not only are you an amazing musician and songwriter but also the biggest hunk of country music.

I just saw “Cryin For Me” and was so moved at the love expressed in this video, it is beautiful simply beautiful, and truthful is we cry for ourselves and our loss from the passing of a loved one. Thanks to all involved in this song and video.

Always been a Toby Keith fan. This is his best. It is a beautiful tribute to Wayman Tisdale and to anyone who has lost a great friend or family member. This is a song that will withstand time.

Words can’t express the grief we are experiencing in the world today, whether it be the lost our own loved ones or compassion for another’s lost, but this song comes extremely close. They had such a beautiful and geniune friendship. My heart goes out to all who loved Mr. Tisdale. You’re the best Toby. R.I.P Wayman!
