Rosanne Cash's The Wheel Still Goes Round

Rosanne CashRosanne Cash is back on the charts with her new album, The List, the latest project in a long and distinguished career. Over the weekend I pulled out The Wheel, her insightful 1993 album that has remained in my collection for many years. Her country career had come to an end by the time it was released, but her creativity appeared to be in full flourish. Living in New York City and kindling a romance with producer John Leventhal, she approached her craft from a new viewpoint, especially in the exhilarating title track. "I felt like I looked up from my navel with that song," she said in the liner notes to The Very Best of Rosanne Cash, "I knew how it felt to give love and recognition." Those topics are prevalent throughout The Wheel -- along with the anxiety of "changing partners" (to borrow a song title). Musically, the album captures some of Cash's most absorbing melodies, and even though the topics are tender, her voice is strong and commanding. If you're hoping to expand your Rosanne Cash catalog, add this one to your list.

I saw this headline and thought ‘that has to be something Craig Shelburne wrote’ before my eyes made it to the byline.

I have only recently gotten into to this and her Interiors album, but I agree her creativity was definitely in full flourish in the early 90s, even if she didn’t fit in the mainstream anymore.

By the time the 90’s hit Rosanne had definately outgrown, and moved past Mainstream Pop Country. Her work was quickly noticed by the ever growing Americana/Roots based fans, and she seems to be totally comfortable in the these Roots Music genres, just as her dad was in his later years. Her CD’s have consistanlt been on the charts ever since. Her CD “Black Cadillac” was a tribute to her Father, Johnny Cash, her mother Vivian, and her stepmom, June Carter Cash, and dominated the charts for many weeks. Close to a year if I recall. It was also in the top 5 of the 100 best Americana albums of that year. “The List” picks up with the same strong force. It is currently #3 on the Americana Music Association Chart and #8 on the Roots Music Report, Roots Country Chart(down from #4 last week). which is not at all surprising, however I heard “The List” was also on some Pop Country Chart too(possibly Billboard?), but I don’t know if it’s true or not.
