Kanye West "Standing Up for Art," Says Beyoncé
Well, well, well. It looks like Kanye West is not the insensitive guy we thought he was. Turns out he was just "standing up for art," according to his pal Beyoncé Knowles. That's what she told O Magazine after the whole Kanye-bum-rushes-Taylor-Swift thing happened on the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. "Well, I knew his intentions, and I knew he was standing up for art," she said. "And he told me before, when they said the nominees, he's like, 'You have this award.' And when they didn't call my name he was, like, completely shocked. And when he walked on the stage, I was like, 'No, no, no!' and then he spoke, and I was like, 'Oh, no, no, no!'" I get that. I was all like no, no, no when I saw what West did that night. And after hearing Knowles' defense of West's actions, I'm still all no, no, no. After all, Swift's "You Belong With Me" video that won that night was art, too.

Prior to the show, one MTV columnist, assessing the likely VMA nominations, had given “You Belong to Me” raves: “Now HERE’S A VIDEO”, the review noted, describing it as filled with romance, humor, drama, comedy, an actual plot, and fine acting performances by Taylor and Till.
Beyonce’s video, regardless of its so-called Bob Fosse references, doesn’t deliver much more than a bunch of booty shaking. Video of the Decade? Hardly.
I like Beyonce but I thought there seemed to be a little too much smiling mixed in with her astonishment at Kanye’s actions and, like Alison, I was surprised by the quotes attributed to her in the blog above (in fairness, quotes taken out of context by the NY press can be tricky). And it’s been widely reported that the REAL person responsible for Beyonce’s magnanimous gesture toward Taylor was not Beyonce herself but her Dad who (a)kept Taylor’s mom from ripping Kanye’s head off, and (2)told Beyonce what she needed to do to make it right. Yay DADS!

I agree- Swift’s video should be considered just as much art as anything else out there. Beyonce didn’t seem to be protesting all that much. Besides, it sounds like Ms B knew that Kanye might pull something like this. She didn’t look that angry or horrified at the VMAs. If I didn’t know any better, she seemed to be delighted at what he did.
I can’t help but wonder, though. If Swift was a young black girl rather than a white girl, would he have pulled this same stunt? No matter what, though… he ruined Swift’s very first VMA award moment. Even if she wins a hundred VMAs after this, she’ll never have that first award moment back. Kanye ruined it forever. Beyonce’s just looking for more attention. After all, she had to do something to save face- she knew that her grinning mug was going to appear in the news the next morning, so she had to appear sympathetic.

I think Beyonce’s comment is being taken in the wrong context. As a huge fan of both Taylor and Beyonce, I think she means well with her comment. I think she meant that Kanye believed it was not art, not herself. She never implied that Taylor did not deserve to win, and she gave up her own time in the spotlight so that Taylor could have hers. Sure, she may be jealous or somewhat upset that she did not win, but who in that category wasn’t? All artists work hard on their music and their videos, but they have just as much respect for one another when they win. I cannot say the same for Kanye, but he’s a different story.
Just drop the situation. I’m sure all artists will be grateful.

No, I haven’t read the article, but it sounds like she was saying Kanye was standing up for what HE thought was art- not that her video was art and Taylor’s wasn’t. She said Kanye thought she deserved the award- she did not say that herself.
I feel bad for Taylor though- she wanted to let this go a week after it happened; almost a month later it’s still being talked about.

Agree with you completely Alison. From everything that went on after Kanye’s rant, it was obvious that Beyonce’s dad was in full damage control. Kanye and Jayze and Beyonce didn’t know how popular Taylor was, and they thought that Kanye doing that at the expense of Taylor would just garner them publicity and that the hip-hop and R&B crowd would applaud his assinine behaviour. MTV is guilty as well for hurriedly trying to cover up to minmize the damage to Beyonce and eliminate any stories of her knowledge or collusion with Kanye’s rant. Eminem offered to have Taylor come on stage during his acceptance because he was honestly appalled at what had been done to her, but MTV told him they thought it would look better if Beyonce did it.
To those that say everyone should move on..yes they should but when new information comes to light regarding the incident and those involved, it’s only good journalism to report it and comment on it. In this case, Beyonce herself showed her true reaction and lack of real concern or empathy regarding what happened, and negates all the perceieved class everyone attributed to her afterwards.

I believe there has been some unfortunate racism — on both sides (let’s face it, defending bad manners just because he or she is the same race as yourself is racist also) — but there is also some general misinformation fueled by a lack of understanding and respect for the other genre and its artists.
Beyonce is one of the best singers around (although I’m pretty sure Etta James thinks she not so much).
Kanye is definitely one of the most talented rap artists. Prior to this fiasco, Taylor Swift had said he was one of the rap artists with whom she would love to record.
Still, he was rude. There’s no justification, no excusing it by standing up for whatever … he was over the line, period.
As for Taylor, maybe some rap fans know her from her video with T-Pain. Or from Timberland proclaiming she was the person he most wanted to produce, that he loved her voice. But anyone who thinks she benefited greatly from the PR is off-base.
One, she accepted Kanye’s apology has refused to talk about it since then,it’s done to her. Two, she was ALREADY the biggest-selling album artist and the top airplay singles artist of the year… more sales than Kanje, Beyonce, too. Her last album had been near the top of the billboard 200 FOREVER. Sure, there was a little bump after the awards week, but isn’t there always for the Female VMA winner?
As for the videos, Taylor’s is a mini teen rom-com, and succeeds brilliantly. I’m still waiting to hear just what part of the video makes it “art” or the greatest video in a decade?

THis is really so funny, I think blogs bring out the evil in people! Taylor seems like a nice girl, I even like her song, her video was cute but we’ve seen that concept done soo many times in the past (same old art). Beyonce, I also like her, her video is going to go down in history, yes we’ve seen booty shaking before but that video is not just about booty shaking, that video is art from the costumes to the video cinema, that is why professionals ranging from dancers to singers to movie directors in the business respect her, because they know how much she really puts into her art.
For the person taking about Record sales and even trying to compare Taylor to Shania is really pointless. As some may not know - the biggest market for music sales comes from little girls! She chose to sing a song that didn’t belong to her and never bothered to ask for permission to sing it, well Etta James was one very angry black lady, she made no secret of it, she said something like ” just who the hell does that black bitch think she is singing my song for that man” I would wager she’d have given anything to be on another planet when CNN told us all how the owner and singer of the song felt about the whole deal, so she too has had her moments of sheer horror and I have a hunch that was a doozy.
As for Taylor, my heart trully did break for her when Kanye did that to her, she was wanting so badly to thank all the fans who voted her the winner and he took that privelage away from her, we all know how she feels and felt, and because I have actually heard her say she wants to let it go this is the last time I will comment on it, but I so wanted to let anyone who may not know about the Beyonce / Prez incident to make sure it does indeed happen to those idols as well. This is why I love Beyonce. Standing up for Kanye West is not only a classy move, but a bold and brave move considering the subtle anti-Black racism that Kanye West has clearly fallen victim of. If the backlash to the Kanye West VMA award murder does not make it clear that anti-Black racism is still prevalent in the White community then nothing is. Knowles is showing that she’s a strong Black woman here, willing to defend her friend in spite of the subtle anti-Black racism that does exist.
I’ve noticed that much of today’s younger White Community hasn’t been educated racial discrimination/segregation/civil rights issues that went on in the 1960s and how it’s negatively impacted today’s Black community because I’m always finding comments over the internet. This is the consequence of Whites keeping American History on Blacks out of our schools. Whites are now clogging up the internet with a defense that slavery ended ages ago, failing to realize that vicious anti-Black racism involving legalized lynchings of Blacks while celebrating, stoning and brutalizing children, raping women, police brutality, and keeping Blacks from all things good only ended up 35 years ago. Look it up on Wikipedia! There was something called The Great Migration where Blacks in the South had to all move up to the North because of all the lynchings and White violence and segregation. Although these Blacks avoided blatant racism, they were faced with subtle racism and still didn’t get very good opportunities but better than the South.
Obviously, this is why the Black community is in the state it’s in today 35 years later because my parents’ generation was brought up lower-class. Because these things aren’t taught to the White community, many of them say that Blacks got themselves in their situation and many engage in subtle anti-Black racism not uncommon in their ancestory.
Even as proven by my African American college course, Whites in my class say they never learned of any of the vicious things we’re learning White America did to Blacks (only 35 years ago) in school.
Bottomline! Beyonce is a strong woman willing to take a stand in a predominately subtly racist white community!

My Response: The same thing did happen, retard. Joe Wilson practically did the same thing as Kanye West only ten times worse as he interrupted the president in a congressional setting; not a 19 year old girl at a VMA award show. Despite that, Kanye West received the far worse backlash and overreaction while Joe Wilson has been getting defended by Whites. Not to mention anti-Black racist comments and slurs galore for Kanye West. Thankfully Blacks didn’t stoop to that level in regards to Joe Wilson as I haven’t seen even one anti-White racist remark on him yet.

Like the saying goes, Art is in the eye of the beholder. It’s also defined as a high quality of conception or execution. Almost anything, taken to a high level of execution, can be considered art, from ping-pong to poker.
Can romantic comedy be art? Even classics like tho old screwball comedies of Cary Grant? “Sleepless in Seattle”? The teen rom-com’s of John Hughes like “Sixteen Candles” (which Taylor’s video resembles so much)?
I would argue yes, if they are done as well as this one. Can anyone honestly look at Taylor’s video — the acting, directing photography, sets — and say there’s no quality there? Sure, it’s been done before, and it won’t be the last time this kind of “best friend” triangle is done either. The point is romantic situations like this DO happen (all the time), so it is art imitating reality — and Taylor writes from personal experience, so, yes, this actually happened to her — and this video doesn’t feel boring and cliched to the viewer.
The video makes you care about these people, root for them. It has tender moments on a park bench, heartbreak on a bleacher, humor (the Taylor mean girl), and a happy ending prom.
Bottom line: Taylor’s video has plot, acting, character development, humor, sadness, happiness, and a love story; Beyonce’s doesn’t. Beyonce’s video has a lot of shots of women’s backsides grinding; Taylor’s doesn’t. Bob Fosse references notwithstanding, I’m still waiting for ANYONE to tell us what damage was done to the concept of art by Taylor winning over Beyonce, especially to the level that would excuse Kanye’s unbelievable rudeness.

Now this quote may have been taken out of context, but as a celebrity she should know better than to say things that could be taken the wrong way. If Taylor Swift and her fanbase want to hold silly grudges over something stupid and draw it out past a day or two into a month, no one is going to feel sorry for them anymore. Hey, like I said- I actually thought that Lady Gaga deserved the award the most. Her video had lots of dancing & hard moves, amazing costumes & a great song. Every video I’ve seen of hers has been amazing & something I can watch repeatedly. Gaga’s horribly underrated by many people.
But as far as Kanye was right in what he said (ignoring that it was the absolute WRONG time to say it), it’s purely subjective. Some people would argue that Swift did deserve the award, some will argue that she didn’t & that some other performer (not necessarily Beyonce) deserved it more. Most people are just angry that he voiced that opinion in such a very rude manner & are taking it out on his personal video choices. He could’ve said anything & people would backlash on the video.
Personally? I saw the Single Ladies video & while Beyonce did dance well, the main draw was the simple special effect to have three of her appearing at once. It was a nice video, but it didn’t really stand out. If Kanye hadn’t so rudely jumped up on stage, the vid really would’ve faded away in the public eye soon after. So would just about all of them, for that matter. Not every video is as memorable as MJ’s ‘Thriller’ & to be honest… Beyonce’s video is just sort of lackluster when you compare it to other videos that have been up for best video in the past. If the VMAs hadn’t made a video category for women, the odds are that Beyonce’s wouldn’t have made it it… nor would have many of the other female competitor’s either. Dance moves does not a video make. There wasn’t any story being told- just Beyonce doing Fosse moves. The song is good & there’s a story in the song, so why didn’t she take advantage of it & tell a darn good tale? She just relied on Fosse’s moves to take her through the whole video. I was just underwhelmed by Beyonce’s video. She could’ve done more with it.
But like I said, it’s purely subjective & I liked Gaga’s video best. The one thing that is 100% true though is that while Kanye does have every right to say that his video of choice should’ve won, he shouldn’t have voiced it in the manner he did. I mean, he could’ve at least waited until AFTER Swift was done giving her speech & ran up on stage as the announcers were getting ready to announce the next act or awards. Then Swift would’ve gotten her moment, Kanye would’ve gotten his announcement spoken & everyone would’ve shrugged it off as another Kanye stunt. Instead of looking like a jerk (because he would’ve given Swift a chance to say her speech), he would’ve been the eccentric singer with a mind of his own. There’s a way to do everything & you just don’t interrupt a teen singer’s first VMA award speech. It was simple mockery of Beyonce thinking anything she does is considered art.
