Tim McGraw Covers All the Good Stuff
It's October, which means the countdown to Tim McGraw's Southern Voice album has officially begun. Which has made me kind of take a trip down memory lane. It's no secret I've loved his music for a long time. But what I guess I didn't realize until I started thinking about it just now, is that I love his music even when it's not his own music. Like when he covers songs from old country stars, new rock stars and pretty much anyone in between.
If I add them all up, I have heard McGraw do more than a dozen cover songs that were huge standouts for me. And don't tell Eddie Rabbitt, Merle Haggard or Elton John this, but sometimes I prefer McGraw's take over the original. More than sometimes, actually. It's all the time. I mean, I thought I liked "Tiny Dancer" when John sang it in the early '70s. But then McGraw gets his heterosexual hands on it and it becomes this gritty, sexy, earthy ballad.
Here are McGraw's cover tunes that are in my head right this minute. Some he's recorded, some I've just had the pleasure of hearing live. If you have some more, please feel free to add to the list:
"She Knows Her Daddy Sings," Jerry Jeff Walker
"The Ride," David Allan Coe
"Tiny Dancer," Elton John
"Go Your Own Way," Fleetwood Mac
"How Long," Ace
"Suspicions," Eddie Rabbitt
"I'd Really Love to See You Tonight," England Dan and John Ford Coley
"Chasing Cars," Snow Patrol
"Between the River and Me," Warren Brothers
"Mama Tried," Merle Haggard
"I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink," Merle Haggard
"Suspicious Minds," Elvis Presley
"The Joker," Steve Miller Band
"When the Stars Go Blue," Ryan Adams
"Swingin'," John Anderson

Alison . . . I’m the very same way. I just like Tim’s music and the way in which he presents the song . . . even when he’s doing cover songs from other artists.
I always find it enjoyable and interesting to see what Tim and the Dancehall Doctors have come up with . . . good job on Southern Voice!
Max007 says:
The boy butchers every song he covers with his wimpy whiny little girly voice.

The Lone Wolf says:
Well, what can be said of this fine music artist. I admire his goodness to those in the military and to fans who are in need. (Reference his stance for federal aid, along with wife Faith Hill. for those in need in Louisiana and other states after Hurricane Katrina) A great artist and even more important, a true humanitarian.
All the best to you Tim now and in the future.
Enough said. Best regards. Vaya con dios. (go with god; go in peace). The Lone Wolf.
captain says:
…dang, you make it sound like he’s dead
Diane says:
Agree 100% with you Alison. Tim McGraw has such a soulfull voice, I could listen to him sing anything.
Also….MILK COW BLUES, does that count? He did it with Asleep At The Wheel
Julie says:
Didn’t he sing “Nobody Knows it but me”? Wasn’t that a Kevin Sharp song?
Jay says:
You obviously didn’t grow up listening to music if you like his shmaltz. If it wasn’t for vocal tuning, he’s lose his career. He’s not fit to shine Merle Haggard’s boots. He’s a joke and everyone who listens to him is a joke of a music fan.
Camilla says:
WOW . . . all Tim fans should be so honored to be critqued by Jay who represents what???? I’ve felt like some of our freedom has been dwindling; however, never realized there were such ‘open minded’ people our there who honestly believe they can speak for a very large group of people as to what they should enjoy and not enjoy.
I sure hope Jay is an unmarried loner because I cringe to think someone has to deal with this personality every day of their life.
Good Luck Tim and the DHD’s on a fabulous album release and upcoming tour. Can’t wait to see you on tour . . .
janet says:
I agree with Jay. Tim can’t sing a lick to save his life. It’s amazing how a recording studio can fix all the horrible notes Tim decapitates.
