Bucky Covington Is Smarter Than a 9th Grader

Bucky CovingtonMy whole family gathered around last night (Sept. 23) to watch Bucky Covington on Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? on CMT. And you know what? He is. He was even smarter than the smartest person in my house: my high school freshman daughter.

His appearance was part of the celebrity week on the show. And his winnings of $25,000 went to the charity of his choice, the Arthritis Foundation. (He said when he was a kid, his mother was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, and he knows they need the help.)

Even though he admitted to host Jeff Foxworthy that he was a lazy student and preferred looking out the window to listening in class, he ended up getting most of the questions right. Like when it was time for 4th grade ancient history. The question was, "Which term refers to the 200 years of peace and prosperity that the Roman Empire enjoyed?" I didn't know. My 5th grader didn't know. Nor did my 9th grader. But Covington was smart enough to know he might not get it right, so he let his classmate Danielle help him out. The answer: Pax Romana.

And when we were all stumped by the 2nd grade music question about which miniature flute plays an octave higher than an ordinary flute, Covington knew it was a piccolo.

He also got these toughies right:

Leonardo DaVinci's La Gioconda was another name for the Mona Lisa.

When you say "23 to 5th power," the exponent is 5.

True or false: The lines of a limerick can never rhyme. (false)

The only wrong answer Covington gave was when he said Amsterdam was the country with a mountain range called the Black Forest. It's actually in the southwest part of Germany. And Amsterdam's not a country.

But overall, it was a good showing for country music. And when he was faced with the hardest decision of the night -- to risk losing the money he'd raised to potentially up it to $250,000 with a question about U.S. history -- he declined. He said, "Why go out with a losing question?"

Great showing Bucky. And as always he was entertaining.

Maybe Bucky Covington has a “big heart,” but I suspect that even an entertainer with a tiny heart would be more than willing to get free publicity by going on a TV show and then donating money that never was his to a charity.

I trust that Bucky is a nice person (and maybe even as smart as a 12th grader!) but I don’t see this as evidence of a “big heart.” It was certainly a nice thing to do, though.

I had an opinion too, but I can see it was taken off. I do believe he played well on the show and therefore WON the money to donate to his charity, so how was it never his?? He won it, didn’t he? Some people have nothing better to do than pick apart every word people say. I don’t care what anybody says…I know Bucky has a big heart, YOU may not know that, but I do. I guess this comment won’t be allowed to stay on here either….whatever….I don’t care.

The money was only “his” in the sense that after winning it, he had the choice of deciding which charity it would be donated to. But I doubt that he ever had any real control over the money, that it ever was in a bank account that he controlled, et cetera. And I highly doubt that he was given the opportunity to keep the money for himself if he so wanted.

I do think it was a nice thing of Bucky to do, but I hardly see it as evidence of a “big heart.”
