Posted: September 18th, 2009 at 4:24 pm  |  By: Calvin Gilbert

VH1 Divas offered some interesting combinations of country and pop stars when it premiered Thursday night (Sept. 17). If you missed it, you can watch the entire show at VH1.com. But if you're mainly interested in the country-related moments, we've got the highlights right here -- Miley Cyrus and Sheryl Crow performing Crow's "If It Makes You Happy" and Martina McBride and American Idol winner Jordin Sparks singing McBride's hit, "A Broken Wing."

“country and pop stars” eh? That’s funny. Among other things.

Martina really outdid Jordin on that one. Martina should have been the Diva on the night. She has one of the top voices in country today.

I’m glad you didn’t disappoint us Red, because I knew that title would get you. I like Jordin, Martina, Cyrus is ok, don’t care for Crow.

men, you don’t know flat from nothing, martina did an outstanding job, it was martina’s song so she got to sing more of it and it was fine with jordin who is a also a great singer.

Who were the country singers on this program?

There’s a reason that Martina got the last note of the song because she is ten times better than Jordin will ever be!! (I like them both too)

Joy, I think Jordin wanted Martina to sing the last note because after all it is her song. Jordin won so many fans on Idol singing Martina’s song. Martina was the guess the week Jordin selected her song to sing on Idol. It was Country week and Martina thought Jordin did a fantastic job. You should check out Jordin Sparks singing this song on Idol and you will see how long and well Jordin can really sing.

The best part of these two videos? Jordan Sparks cringing in pain and plugging her ears on that final scream of McBrides! The Cyrus, Crow set was quite painful too.

Both of the above duets were awful. But the duet with Kelly Clarkson and Melissa Etheridge and the duet with Jennifer Hudson and Stevie Wonder were the show stealers.

I have no comment on Miley being there, it’s just good that it wasn’t both Miley and Taylor.

Martina was flawless as usual, but it was actually Carrie Underwood who was asked to be the one to represent country there but had a prior engagement with the HOF induction on the same night.

    Next year could be better

Miley and Sheryl stole the show imo. The whole show was great, but i really loved “If It Makes You Happy” I’v always loved Sheryl. She writes the coolest songs, and hearing Miley and Sheryl’s voices together was amazin.

Miley Cyrus had no business being included in this. What an insult to the much more talented ladies who had to share the stage with a mediocre ‘bubble-gum’ act.

holy freaking cow god cant they at least pick singers that are actually worth listening to? Miley Cyrus cant sing that song and sounds like she has a cotton ball stuck up her nose, take a look at sheryl crows face every time Miley sings, she winces so many times, its kinda funny. Jordin and martina was a bad match too. whoever matched these singers and songs together should start looking for a new career. wasteless time spent on tasteless music.

God pizzahut, your name makes me hungry, anyways what you said about mily and everyone is just too unfair. you have no taste in music if you think everyone was horrible. they all worked so hard to get to where they are and granted they may totally suck occasionally but that does not mean you have to bash on them all the freaking time. that is soo cruel and you have no life.

Why wasn’t Carrie Underwood on there?

as far as pairing up the artists, didn’t jordin sing martina’s song , broken wing on american idol? isn’t that a good reason to pair the two? please inform me where carrie was first choice, just curious to know and if true martina has always had the grace to let that fact go and perform, even if second choice.

Seriously, it was an insult to all the other singers to include Miley Cyrus on Divas. How the hell Miley even became a singer is beyond me or even an actress, she sucks terribly at them both, plus her dad sucks at both too. I agree with pizzahut, she sounds like she has a cottonball stuck up her nose. But props up to all the others they did great.

Miley has a strong voice but she needs to ratchet it down a bit on duets.

  • ROGER says:

    Posted: September 20th, 2009 at 8:42 pm

They could not have asked Carrie Underwood before asking Martina because Carrie is not a seasoned veteran. The pairing would not have made sense. All of the pairings were new Divas with longer established Divas. Carrie has not been around long and only has had two albums.

Miley a Diva? a child maybe, but she is no Diva..not even close..not even semi close.

  • Nancy says:

    Dear Sonya,

I agree with you that Miley is no Diva. She is too young to understand what that means. Her dress was oversexed for her age and even though she has probably been forced to grow up too fast, like Britney, hopefully she will not end up going too far at a young age like Britney did.

Martina McBride is a true country Diva. Her music transcends country and I love her voice. Jordin Sparks is a repectful young woman(19 years old) who will continue to grow and mature. She would never steal the limelight from the woman who perfomed “A Broken Wing”. She has too much repect for her elders than that. I loved that duet. I wish they would collaborate on a song someday. There voices are similar. You go Jordin. You looked beautiful and I loved “S.O.S.” If anyone can mix talent with beauty it will be Jordin Sparks.

I actually thought the song fit miley’s voice pretty well. I also figured out what I dont like about her voice. Its her thick accent. It comes through her singing, but at the same time she has a big range so it doesnt mix well. Like I said I thought this was one of her best performances. She actually sounded like Sheryll and Sheryll did great too.

Also why are we comparing Jordin and Martina with whos better? I thought it was the smartest pairing. That song helped Jordin win American Idol and Martina in the Celine Dion of country music. I thought their voices complimented eachother, even sounded similar

Also people have to cool with the insults with Miley. She is a teenager. You people are just a rude and inconsiderate as Kanye, picking on a teenage girl

I find it puzzling to see that for some 19 year old Jordin is considered a young woman but Taylor is often referred to as a ‘child’….maybe because she acts like one..so her fan base can relate.

I agree Sonya, Mikey is just living off the coat tails of daddy and now its vice versa. She is NOT country int he first place

I loved Martina McBride I always have anyone who says she sux is jeallous and thats a fact. Jordin was good But Martina well she isnt the Celine Dion of Country for nothing. Martina never gets credit for that amazing voice why dont we giver her some!! So Martina should have been a diva. She is a Diva in my catagory..
