Tonight, Carrie Underwood Enjoys Home Sweet Home

Posted: September 17th, 2009 at 11:20 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Carrie UnderwoodTonight's the night (Sept. 17) that Carrie Underwood is being inducted into one of the most important halls of fame ever -- at least for those born and raised in Oklahoma. This year's inductees in the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame will be honored during a ceremony and concert in Muskogee, and I'm sure there will be a lot of fuss over the Checotah native, especially because she may play some new tunes off her forthcoming album. (An album she tells NewsOK.com she loves, adding, "I know I'd buy it.") The video interview portion also has Underwood giving this sage advice: "Life is what you make of it. ... And we're all dealt a different set of cards." So, so true. And I'm sure every Okie in Muskogee -- and throughout the state -- is thrilled with the way she's playing hers. Tickets are still available at the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame box office.

This had to have been done for money making reasons just like making her a member of the grand ole opry. It works though$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Congratulations to Carrie- that is an awesome and well-deserved honor. It is so obvious that the state of Oaklahoma and her hometown means so much more to her than a lot of these big stars.

Bullride: How’s does Carrie’s induction make money for the Hall of Fame? All it does it gives her recognition. If the Opry was about money than anyone who wanted could be inducted-Even new artists who are just breaking ground. How would it be fair if there was not a panel to decide the qualifications of each member? Carrie is highly qualified, and she was chosen by an elite board of people for this amazing honor. Obviously they saw her immense talent and dedication to the Opry and coutry music- as well as her commitment to staying as true to her musical roots as possible. She’s certainly not “country” in Dolly, Loretta, and Tammy terms, but she IS country to her generation of fans.

Did you know the very FIRST place Carrie played right after her Idol win was the Opry? She has played more shows than any current artist I can recall in recent times. She has played there when she is sick, when another artist cannot make it, when she is invited, or when she wants to celebrate the Opry’s birthday or other accomplishments.

She certaintly has the accolades AND vocals to merit an induction as well. There are not many artists who can sing LIVE on the Opry and do a stellar job, because the soundsystem is so old. If you think about any current country artists that is enormously popular and respects the Opry, who qualifies? Taylor has only been invited to play there twice to my knowledge, and she caters to a pop audience. Kellie has played there a few times, but doesn’t have near the commerical success. Artists like Juliane, Sara, Reba, and many others are failing to secure the kind of popularity and success Carrie has had in a very short amount of time.

When you couple that with Carrie’s stellar vocals, respect and dedication to the Opry, and her rabid fanbase who will snap up tickets and fill up seats faster than you can say “go,” you have a formula.

The Opry really needed her; they were struggling to sell shows or seats before she came along. If you don’t believe me, why is she asked to appear more than any current artist? Why is she asked to do a Breast Cancer Benefit on the first Opry show of the fall? Opry members and voters are not blind; they know she is incredibly talented (probably the best since Martina), AND she sells tickets and gains noteriety for the Opry.

So basically you’re agreeing with me. She sells tickets, that’s what I said$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ You said the opry sound system is old? With a FOH console, a 64 input ATI Paragon II with recall faders and assignable soft keys feeding a flown JBL Vertech system, it’s far from old. It’s state of the art, high tech redneck

  • K says:

    Posted: September 17th, 2009 at 9:01 pm

Bullride: I partially agree with you, yes. I’m sure some of Carrie’s induction had to do with money, since all her apperances will attract boatloads of her fans, thus making money and giving noteriety to an otherwise unknown institution to many younger country fans.

However, I take issue with your implication that Ms. Underwood’s incredible, once-in-a-lifetime voice has nothing to do with this incredible hoonor. Carrie is bar-none the greatest young woman to grace the stages of country music in quite some time. Notice I did NOT say she is the most innovative artist, songwriter or performer- but I stand by the assumption that Carrie is the best contemporary female vocalist since Martina McBride.

This alone, in my opinion, more than warrants an induction for Carrie. Multiple talents as a singer, performer and songwriter do boost credibility, but in my opinion, everyone who gets a record deal should be critiqued and praised for vocal talent first and foremost before anything else.

Carrie more than has the talent as a singer, and she will continue to evolve in other areas as well.

I have never understood why people think time in the music business has anything to do with such an honor- if your talent and sales speak to enough people than why not?

  • Bullride says:

    Posted: September 17th, 2009 at 9:55 pm

You also said the opry sound system is old. That’s not true. Carrie hits her notes, and her marks, and her controlled scream is every bit as good as Martina’s. She’s doing what she’s supposed to do, make alot of people a lot of money. Nothing wrong with that if that’s what you are into. You have your opinion, I have mine. She’s boring, and too manufactured for me. Marketing is getting in the way of the music, but I’m sure she’s a nice girl.

  • K says:

    Posted: September 17th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

“Controlled scream?” Carrie is one of the most technically-proficent singers country music has seen in years. Carrie has incredible vocal control, tone and phrasing. She can make her voice soft and valunerable (”I Know You Won’t,” “Just A Dream,” “I’ll Stand By You); Powerful and emotional (”Jesus, Take The Wheel, “How Great Thou Art”); sassy and brash (”Before He Cheats,” “Last Name, “Cowboy Casanova”), OR she can just do plain fun, youthful material that she relates to (”All American Girl, “Crazy Dreams.”)

Yes, Carrie has been known to scream on occasion, but Martina and many belters in all genres are gulity of that; often times, screaming gets mistaken for bleting in my opinion.

Carrie is an exteremly versitile and gifted artist, and she won the biggest talent show in America; either a small minority of people thinks she screams, or she an extremely emotive, expressive and gifted vocalist. Considering she has won female vocalist three years running, and has been praised by legends like Randy Travis, Lorreta Lynn, and Patty Lovless coupled with current artists like Brad, Kenny, Lady A, Kellie Pickler, Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts and Darius Rucker, I’d say she is doing just fine.

It also speaks volumes that Carrie has been praised by the very country legends that turn around and critcize other artists for being too autotuned, slick and packaged, but then they can praise Ms Underwood- the fact that she came from a talent show says even more about her ability to win artists and fans over.

I don’t why you keep dragging in the money factor, either. Every artist and band in society has to make a profit because they need to make a living off their career. Would I would be correct if I said every artist entertains only because that’s simply what love to do? Of course not! Just like you wouldn’t say your only purpose for working is because you love it, right? Artists, musicans and individuals in society can truly do what they love, but it’s ludicrious if they are not making money.

I don’t agree that marketing gets in the way of talent in this case, either. As the case with profits, artists also need great marketing to help their careers stay afloat and survive. So yes, Carrie is a “victim” of marketing, but she has to be in order to keep people discovering her music, thus keeping her afloat as an artist.

There are some cases where marketing does not match the talent of an artist (Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, and many Disney-affiliated artists), which can sometimes merit the arguments of great marketing vs. great talent.

I am not saying these artists are not talented, nor am I singling them out; I’m merely using them as people who I personally think fit the bill for making millions on sub-par talent as singers, not extrodinary talent.

I would take a “screamer” any day over an off-key, average-voiced warbler like Miley any day.

  • Minnesota Norm says:

    Posted: September 18th, 2009 at 5:34 am

I agree with K Carrie is one of the most talented country singers of our time. I would never consider her a “screamer”, because when you scream you will not be able to hit the right key, and I’ve never heard Carrie sing an off key note yet.

Congratulations Carrie on your “Entertainer of the Year” award and your induction into the “Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame”.

Obviously another person who does not know the difference between “scream” and “Project”. A SCREAM comes from the throat, above the diaphragm. PROJECTION comes from below the diaphragm and is controlled by breathing properly while the chords vibrate. I love these people who know absolutely nothing about vocal techniques talking about peoples’ voices.

K - Reba’s already a member of the Opry. The Opry has quit a few members and several of those members became members in a short time from the time their career started - commercially speaking.

Garth’s induction was shortly after he burst on to the scene.
Martina’s induction was shortly after she burst on to the scene.
Allison’s induction was shortly after she burst on to the scene.
Brad’s induction was shortly after he burst on to the scene.
Josh Turner’s induction was shortly after he burst on to the scene.
Dierks Bentley’s induction was shortly after he burst on to the scene.

Then there’s Montgomery Gentry and Charlie Daniels (especially Charle) that had to wait forever for an invitation to be members.

a good person with a good heart who gives back to her community because she hasnt forgotten where she came from in fact when she was being inducted in oklahoma she gave credit to her hometown for being responsible her being who she is today…in addition great parenting as well.she stands up for what is dear to her heart and that is animals she fights for their rights and trys to be their voice, she volunteers to sing for our troops…she is a very good person who is appreciative of everything she has. she has an amazing talent in my opinion she is one of the best to come along in a very long time “yes” i do agree that carrie does have similarities with martina mcbride and im so glad that carrie is part of my generation ! i know carrie has a very long career in country music and its great that they recognize her all the time, with all the awards she has won and the opry inducting her and being able to host the CMA’s not once but twice in nov. she has broken records left and right on the music charts….te sky is the limit for carrie and the country music industry has really embraced her!! i couldnt imagine what carrie is feeling but i know it is very well deserved!! Oklahoma certainly has great musical talent - they should be proud of Carrie , she’s a wonderful singer
