Singer, songwriter and master musician Buddy Miller ruled at the 2009 Americana Music Awards and Honors ceremony that took place Thursday night (Sept. 17) at the Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville. In addition to being named artist of the year, he and wife Julie Miller were named duo/group of the year and won the album of the year trophy for Written in Chalk. The song of the year award went to "Chalk," a Julie Miller composition recorded by her husband and Patty Griffin. Justin Townes Earle, son of singer-songwriter Steve Earle, received the award for new and emerging artist. Texas-based Gurf Morlix was named instrumentalist of the year. The event included performances by John Fogerty, Rodney Crowell, the Flatlanders, Raul Malo, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, John Prine and Nanci Griffith. The awards show is one of the highlights of the Americana Music Festival and Conference continuing through Saturday.

This is great — Buddy and Julie are so deserving.

“Chalk” is worthy of song of the year, but I wouldn’t care if it was “Ellis County” or “Gasoline and Matches” or “Long Time” or a couple of other songs on this wonderful album. Only one suggestion: One or two more upbeat tunes like “Gasoline..” would improve the pacing. That minor quibble aside, this album has been on my most played list for some time and will stay there.

Now WHEN is a National TV audience going to have a chance to see THIS show??

Long live “The King” Buddy Miller. With him dominating this years Americana Music Awards like he did, you can be sure to see his name several times when the Grammy nominations are announced. Americana artists dominate the Grammy nominations. Congratulation King Buddy.
