New Music Videos From Three Indie Label Artists

Three indie record label artists showcased their new videos for the CMT New Music Video Evaluation Team this week. Heartland debuted their "Mustache," Alecia Nugent brought "Don't Tell Me" from her album, Hillbilly Goddess, and Anthony Smith shows you "Bringin' Back the Sunshine."

Artist: Alecia Nugent
Video: "Don't Tell Me"
Director: Glenn Sweitzer

From Rounder Records comes Alecia Nugent, who grew up singing in her father's band in rural Louisiana. "Don't Tell Me" is a heartfelt lament that showcases her country and bluegrass upbringing.

Panelists' comments: "That's a beautiful song." "And it's loooong and slow." "She's an excellent singer."

Artist: Heartland
Video: "Mustache"
Director: Chris Conn

Permian Records' group Heartland injects some subversive humor in the new music video for the song, "Mustache." The narrator ridicules his girlfriend's new lothario, who has a thin mustache, wears a leopard-skin jacket and a Speedo and "looks like a porn star."

Panelists' comments: "That is funny!" "I'll bet Cledus [Judd] will do 'She's Got a Mustache' now." "I haven't heard Brut 33 mentioned in years."

Artist: Anthony Smith
Video: "Bringin' Back the Sunshine"
Director: Traci Goudie

From Stroudavarious Records, Anthony Smith is a Nashville singer-songwriter whose song credits include Trace Adkins' "I'm Tryin'" and "Chrome" and Tim McGraw's "Kristofferson." "Bringin' Back the Sunshine" is the first single from his second solo album, Sunshine, scheduled for release this winter.

Panelists' comments: "His first album was awesome!" "I love Anthony, but I'm just not sure about this song yet." "How did that pickup truck tow up the sunrise? Nice effect!" "I'm curious. How do you switch from a Les Paul to a Strat during one video?"

Love the effects of “Bringing Back the Sunshine.” Nice treatment for the story line of the song.

Maybe I’m just not in the right frame of mind, but “Mustache” just isn’t funny to me.

Love “Don’t Tell Me”, though “Mustache” was dumb not funny. Didn’t like “Bringing Back the Sunshine” - very boring, but I did like the video effect.

Alecia would be a good add to pop country radio. She’s different and “more” traditional country, but commercial enough. Her voice is great. Like the Dixie Chicks bringing the blue grass flavor to pop radio and being succussful. Although, she may need a stonger personality than she seems to have. Anyway, I’d like to her more of her.

Been a fan of the Hillbilly Goddess for a while now. The other two videos and songs are basically junk. I was wondering who made this statement though…”I’m curious. How do you switch from a Les Paul to a Strat during one video?”? That’s not a “Strat”. It’s a Telecaster Thinline.

“Don’t Tell Me” is some of the best country singing I’ve heard in a while. The rest…no thanks.
