I've Known Carrie Underwood's "Cowboy Casanova"

Posted: September 3rd, 2009 at 11:45 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Carrie UnderwoodI think I know this guy -- the one Carrie Underwood's singing about in her fresh new single, "Cowboy Casanova," which arrived at country radio stations last night (Sept. 2). You can hear it on her Web site. And she's right, you better run for your life.

I've known a hundred guys like the one she's singing about. I've known them in a love/hate kind of way. So I like that she and her co-writers, Mike Elizondo and Brett James, managed to give this song a very upbeat sound even with its decidedly negative message warning women to stay away.

And Underwood is just so damn good at this hell-hath-no-fury-like-a-woman-scorned kind of tune. In this one, she doesn't let loose like she did on "Before He Cheats." This one just has her giving some girl a litany of reasons to stay away from this good-time cowboy Casanova leanin' up against the record machine. While he looks like a cool drink of water, he is in fact candy-coated misery.

It's a fast-talker in parts, which makes it challenging to sing along. But it's also a fast-rocker, with what sounds like layers of some major guitars. So it's a good tune for Underwood to be able to showcase her endless range. Songbird one minute, belter the next. "I Told You So" this ain't. And if you know a guy like this, heed Underwood's warning. Don't even look in his eyes. He'll tell you nothing but lies.

Last Name was “Before He Cheats: Part II”
Cowboy Casanova is “Before He Cheats: Part III”

I was hoping for a more “feel good” uptempo song like “All-American Girl”, but this song is not bad…I actually like it better than Before He Cheats, which was obviously huge. I think this is the best of her sassy singles.

Let’s see…assembly line music intended for general appeal to the masses that is overproduced and overplayed for profit. In musical terms it is essentially conservative in that it attemps to resonate with a large segment of it’s target demographics which usually includes individuals musically limited in knowledge, with a tendency of naivety.

Yep! Sounds like another smash Pop hit! ;)

Redmaz - you are tiring. You talk about “disrespecting” country all the time. It is you that disrespects anyone with musical taste other than your own. I happen to like Americana, traditional country, bluegrass, contemporary popular country and a ton of other completely non-country genre’s.

Just because music has mass appeal, doesn’t make it bad. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t. But, either way, taste in styles of music are individual and your taste are no more “pure” than anyone elses.

You want to talk about bad vocals or that you just don’t like the musicality or lyrics of a song, then that’s your perogative. But, becuase you don’t like it doesn’t make it assembly line music for individuals musically limited in knowledge. There should be music out there for more than just the 20 people that like the music you like. If it is touching the masses, then she connected with more than those 20 people.

Glad this new album has something a little different, showing her rocker chick heart with a country loving soul. Love the album cover too! She is soooooo pretty!

It’s so infectious you can’t help but jive to it when you hear it on the radio. Awesome first release from the new album. Once again Carrie’s vocals shine.

WOW! Once again I see the haters have come out to play.YES! That means Carrie has another hit on her hands.Like I’ve said plenty of times before, in this industry and this world if you don’t have haters then you ain’t doing nothing great.Your haters are your motivators.Since, I see Carrie has so many on here that let’s me know she is doing something great. If I came on here and people gave a little blah blah I like it speech and move on, then I would have said Carrie has to do better. But no, they are out in full force and nasty as ever. But, that’s good because the nastier they are, that means the more confidant they are of her success and are upset by it.So don’t stop them.Hate on haters.

.Hi Robin, I do not appreciate anyone disrepecting Country Music. Someones musical tastes aren’t really the issue either. Personally it doesn’t matter what type of music anyone listens to, however I do have a problem with them not knowing what it is, and what it represents. As far as you liking such a variety of music, that’s great, so any disrespect to anyone in any post of mine wasn’t intended for you anyway(and that’s alot of “anys”)…..

As far as music having mass appeal doesn’t make it bad. True, but once again I was purely speaking of basic music fundamentals and genre description. Can you really argue the description I gave of this song and the industry? The issue of me personally liking any song hasn’t been discussed. Just taking it it from the top, but if you’d like to get into discussing individual artists that would be fine too. As far as this song, I listened to it, and gave a definition based on fact. Liking it or not liking has nothing to do with it really. Then of course there’e the issue of the industry itself which my original post was also intended for.

Not only that, it sounds like something from an 80’s Pop Rock hair band. It’s a dittie, It’s a hit I tell ya A hit!!!!!

Now on to something more important…who are some of your favorite Americana artists? Just now I came across this group called “ShutDownTown” this girl(don’t even know her name yet. that’s how new it is to me) was singing this great bluesy tune called “Dark Skies”. That’s all I know about them right now check them out if you get a chance. I think I’m going to now..

  • Robin says:

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 7:35 am

John - this song is more country than anything on Taylor’s album “Fearless”. Taylor’s debut album was country, but “Fearless” is not. “Cowboy Casanova” is country (just as other rock’n country songs are country.

  • Robin says:

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 7:37 am

Thomas - I agree with you 100%! Carrie is awesome, fantastic, wonderful and I’m glad she’s back with a new awesome single. But, we’ve not been missing great country female singers since she’s been working on her new album. Miranda’s new singles are great (can’t wait for the album) and Reba’s been amazing as always. Although there are other great females in country music, I think they are the only two with great new music out right now. (I don’t think Martina has anything new out).

  • Robin says:

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 8:00 am

Redmaz - You are disrespectiing country so point your fingers back to yourself. Someone’s musical taste are the issue. People do know that Carrie isn’t singing Americana, all of them, not just me. She is siging contemporary popular country. No one thinks she’s singing traditional country either. They do have a problem with people who try to claim it’s not country. It is country. Just a different sub genre - we’ll call that contemporary country since you don’t like “pop” (it is all symantics).

There are alot of people who do understand what the different genre’s of country are, but they like Carrie (and even Taylor’s music (as hard as that is to believe)) also. Just because they are talking about it here and not using the words you like doesn’t mean they don’t understand those basics.

You were not purely speaking of basic music fundamentals and genre description by calling it “assembly line music for individuals musically limited in knowledge”. That is purely your opinion and not based on “musical” factor or definition. Fact is alot of people that are very diverse in their musical taste like this girl and her music. Her fans aren’t all below the age of 19. Most of them are adults (probably primarily women) who have been listening to music at minimum since the 70’s. So, they have as diverse background and life experience in the music of our past as anyone in your special “all knowing musical genious” network.

You have not talked about a song specifically? You called it “assembly line music for individuals musically limited in knowledge”. So, you have talked about this song specifically. And, like it or not, it’s only your personal opinion.

It doesn’t sound anything like pop diddy’s from the 80’s. If it has a familiary sound then you only need to look to Shania. It sounds more like something she would have sang in the 90’s than anything else.

As far as my favorite I like different stuff. I like Tift Merrett, Notorious Cherry Bombs, (LOVE) Ralph Stanley and Jim Lauderdale. I like some of Allison Kraus’ stuff, but I prefer her more traditional country and am not just real crazy about her period (musically). I like Lucinda Williams. I like Billy Joe Shaver well enough if I don’t have to watch him sing. I like Sarah Borges well enough. I hate Sunny Sweeney (musically). To me she’s the Taylor Swift of Americana. This girl just cannot sing.

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 9:50 am

Hi Robin thanks for the reply, However, I feel you are in no position to tell me what I was refering to in my post. I stated exactly what I intended, if you’re reading something more into it to twist it a certain way for your convenience, that’s your problem. As far as Underwood not singing Americana Music, that obvious only to Americana Music fans. I would say most fans of Underwood have no idea what they’re listening to, let alone knowing what Americana Music is. The only people who know that Underwood is not singing Americana music are educated enough to know the difference between Pop and Roots music. From my observations, that is a very small percentage. If you asked 100 Underwood fans(or Pop fans in general) what American/Roots Country music is, how many do you think would know? How many of them could list me 20 Americana/Roots artists? I believe 10% would be pushing it. Now…if you asked 100 Sunny Sweeney fans for example(or Roots Music fans in general) what Mainstream/Pop music is, how many do you think would know? How many of them could list me 20 Mainstream/Pop acts? I would say close to 100%. See where the disrepsect come into play? Lack of knowledge. Lets just take this blog for example, how many of the people here who think this song is great, wonderful etc. know what Americana/Roots Music is? I accept your definition of what Underwoods music is. I agree it’s Country. POP Country. That’s the term, and I would appreciate everyone using the correct term out of respect for Country Music. I’ve always said these people are Pop Country acts. You can make up excuses for these people all you want, but the facts don’t lie. If you don’t believe Underwood, or Pop Music in general is not everything I said it was in my first post, then you only fooling yourself. Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance, and conscientious stupidity. .

btw…are you the same “Robin” in the two previous posts?

Robin, you’re calling RedMaz out for what you call disrespecting country. Yet you disrespect Taylor and her fans with your remark (and even Taylor’s music(as hard as that is to believe). So how are you any different?

  • Thomas says:

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 10:22 am

You Carrie fans just can’t stop attempting to insult Taylor and her music, can you? I don’t really care for her myself, but come on. None of you can honestly say that Cowboy Cassanova is more country than “anything” on Taylor’s cd. Maybe you should put your biases aside for a moment and realize that this single isn’t the best song to come around in the history of music. After reading all of Carrie fans’ comments, I was expecting something to blow me away. But I guess this is just going to be another hugely overrated song (it’s kind of funny that my favorite Carrie single is the least talked about one, but that’s a different story). It’s too bad this will go to #1 also. That’s the perk of being Carrie, Taylor, Rascal Flatts, or Brad - You can release whatever you want and it automatically goes to #1. Too bad country radio has lost all credibility and just plays the same artists all the time no matter what the song is. It’s too bad other great female artists like Reba, Martina, and Miranda have to sit there and watch their songs stall on the charts just because they are not Carrie or Taylor.

  • Ann says:

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 10:34 am

Another overrated song by an overrated singer. Ms Underwood has been riding two albums over 4 years & I cannot understand why she is so poular. Her song lyrics are boring at best & her musical range is limited. With so many other good female country singers in the “pop” country world why so much praise is heaped on her is beyond me. This song in particular is banal & boring & sounds like everyother song she’s recorded due to her lack of musical range & her unwillingness or inability to sing grown up music.

  • What??? says:

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 10:47 am

RedMaz, you should be absolutely ecstatic.

The Carrie fans will drive this to No. 1 and kill mainstream country radio for good. Carrie has just made herself the poster child for everything that’s wrong with Nashville today.

This is not a country song.

It’s a mediocre, dated rock jingle best suited for a soundtrack on a B movie from the ’80s.

The lyrics are a string of a string of blue-stater cliches about an imaginary small-town America. Who says “record machine” anymore?

And we all know that the “cowboy” is Dallas QB Tony Romo, so there’s not even that hook to tie it to country music.

This is sad. I can’t believe that Carrie would release this as a single when she’s at the peak of her career.

  • Robin says:

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 10:55 am

Ann - that’s funny. Overrated song, by an overrated singer? That’s you’re opinina nd you’re entitled to it. But, many many many people disagree. So, we’ll just have to disagree. Her lyrics may bore you, but not everyone. This song is quit different (musically speaking if not lyrically) than her other music, so you’ll have to do better with that. Of course, it’s still her music so it will still sound like her voice. That’s how it is when a particular person sings. All of George Strait’s music sound just like every other George Strait song. Not that that’s a cutdown, it seems reasonable since George Strait is still singing it.

Grown up music? Not even looking at her entire albums, let’s just look at her singles. “Jesus Take The Wheel” (Grown up song #1), “Don’t Forget To Remember Me” (coming of age song (child to adult), “Before He Cheats” (fun and fast (grown up) - if you have issues with it being young yet grown up, then I’ll give you the fact that it’s not something a 40 something would be sining about hopefully), “Wasted” (grown up song). So, album 1 has 2 full fledge grown up singles and 2 young adult (which is what she is).

Album #2 - “So Small” (grown up song), “All American Girl” (coming of age), “Last Name” (see “Before He Cheats” statement above), “Just A Dream” (very grown up and well communicated), “I Told You So” (Grown up). So, album 2 has 3 full fledge grown up singles and 2 young adult singles.

So, there you have it, the break down. What other topics would you like her to cover to make her more grown up?

  • Robin says:

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 11:00 am

Thomas - Cowboy Casanova is more country than anything on Taylor SECOND CD. Her first CD was country - “Fearless” is not. Reba’s music does well on the charts. Miranda’s stalls on the chart because she’s more traditional country. That’s how it is on most POP country radio stations. I still think she’s great and listen to her via her CD’s and satelite radio. Carrie and Taylor are not the problem with country radio. It’s the men that get too much air play. I don’t like Taylor’s music. But, she deserves her airplay if people are requesting her music.

  • Robin says:

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 11:07 am

kayko - I am calling RedMaz out for what HE/SHE calls disprespecting country. He doesn’t appreciate it yet is the biggest offender. I don’t think using the term country to refer in general to “pop country” is disrespectful. That’s just silly.

“(and even Taylor’s music(as hard as that is to believe).” That is an opinion. I sell it as such. I don’t try to pretend that some musical definition makes my opinion - fact. That’s what makes what I’m saying different. I have an opinion. I don’t give it ALL the time non-stop. But, it is my opinion. I don’t think the girl can sing or write music. But, clearly other people do. When there is a conversation about it, I discuss it on occasion, but I don’t expect everyone to agree with me and I don’t call them names like “ignorant” for not agreeing with me. I may say “your opinion is hard to believe”, but that’s not saying “you are an idiot”.

Can you honestly not tell the difference in having an opinion (even if it’s negative or different than yours) and being arrogant enough to believe your opinion is FACT.

  • Robin says:

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 11:10 am

thetruefan - although I agree with you and I do think pitch and the ability to stay on it is not just an opinion. Unlike people’s preference for music which is not scientific and IS someone’s OPINION. But, can anything be “proven” or “FACT”?

  • Ann says:

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 11:11 am

No, i’m not too young to appreciate “good” music. I must say however, Robin your analysis of the lyrics to her music is really a stretch. If you enjoy her fine, that’s your right, however, I was simply pointing out all her songs are generic & could be sung by almost anyone. Musically she doesn’t take any chances & her lyrics are banal, boring, & predictable. I have yet to hear a song of hers that makes me stop & think twice about anything. As far as Taylor Swift goes, no, she’s a bit too young for me, but at least she writes the majority of her songs & she doesn’t pretend to have great voacal range. She sings what best suits her lyrics. As far as sounding the same on every song, I agree that Reba always or almost always sounds like Reba, George like George, etc. What I was trying to point out is that at least their songs change it up every now & then where Ms Underwood may throw in a vanilla growl every now & then, but there’s no real definition between one song to the other.

  • thetruefan says:

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 11:18 am

Ann you have GOT to be kidding. No difference between Before He Cheats and Just A Dream? What about I know you wont? She has a TREMENDOUS range, spot on control and a smoothe tone that can change with the mood of the song. She is phenomenal.

  • Robin says:

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 11:22 am

    Now, back to you RedMaz:

I don’t need to tell you what you were referring to, I spoke on what “you stated in writing”.

I will dare to say that there is not one single human being on the planet that thinks Carrie Underwood sings “Americana”. I know that’s a big statement, but I stand by it. They think she sings “COUNTRY” and then does not feel the need to define it any further than that. Those 100 pop fans are country fans. That’s where your disrespect for country music continues. Pop country, but country. If you asked those Sunny Sweeney fans if they actually believed she was singing on pitch, I wonder how many would say yes? Perhaps they are educated but don’t have an ear for pitch?

Yes, I am the same Robin. While I listen to all types of music I prefer contemporary popular country music. I’m chatting on a “pop” country website (even though they throw the rest in in small bites) and I listen to contemporary country radio primarily. When I start getting bored with that, I put in CD’s and turn on the satelite radio. So, the point is, just because someone isn’t talking about Americana constantly or using all the language you want, doesn’t mean they don’t know any other type of music.

kayko - An opinin is just that. An opinion. When someone thinks their opinion is the only opinion or FACT then “there’s your trouble”. You may not like my opinio, but I doubt anyone is going to agree with everyone. Ann has her opinion. I clearly don’t agree, with it, but it’s her right to have it. Now engaging her on the reasons and back-up for that opinion is called “discussion”. That’s what these posts are for. I certainly don’t think she’s an “idiot” for having a negative opinion of Carrie’s music. I may think she’s missing some great music, but that’s her perrogative to have the musical taste she has without being bashed (by being called names - not by being disagreed with).

So, you may have been around long enough to see other people with negative opinions of Taylor, but that doesn’t make their opinion passive/aggressive behavior. I don’t happen to think Taylor is talented. You do - that doesn’t make you an idiot. I think her music should be played on radio (if she’s being requested by country radio listeners on country radio and not just kids calling in to country radio even though they don’t listen to it). Meaning, if her fans are not listening to country radio and other country artists that are being played on pop country radio, then she should be played only on pop radio. But, I’m not suggesting I KNOW for a FACT that her requestors are country radio listeners or not, but I do doubt it. I have no FACTS to back that up, it’s just an opinion based on her fan base and where her sales lay.

I even wish the girl continued success since I do believe her to be a good influence on her young fans. I think the whole Disney movement seems to be moving in a good direction. And, I will never complain about good influences having success. But, we aren’t talking about that, I’m talking about MY OPINION of her musical talents both vocally and her songwriting. Again, I don’t give this opinion non-stop on every blog or board. But, there’s no reason not to discuss it on occassion.

It is a myth that only “kids” listen and request Taylor on the radio, or that her fans are not country fans. I’m far from being a “kid” and I know that many of her fan’s here on CMT are not “kids”. Yet you and others continue to imply that only “kids” are her fans. I seem to remember that same arguement used against Carrie a few years ago, and as we all know that wasn’t correct.

if you dont like carrie i dont really care,i know carrie isnt for everyone and not everyone will be fans, what i do find offensive are the people that try to start drama and nitpick her on everything and i think for those that say she is over rated and over exposed and dont like her style and music because its not “real country”..then why do you people obsess about it?…if she is not worthy enough why do you blog about her,i think you people just enjoy fighting and insulting her and try to start arguments with her fans??…i know for me i dont waste my time on artists i dont care for,and i dont purposely go to blog sites and disrespect their fans i respect fans choices even if i think their idol sucks!… im not on a site stirring the pot…some of you are immature its not cool to offend anyone…… carrie, taylor, shania, etc..may not be “traditional boring country”…but its actually working for them and their careers are incredible and they are breaking records and doing what they love and what their good at…the numbers show that the majority of fans out there are loving them and their style they are obviously disagreeing with you people who are stuck on the old traditional country songs…they are record breakers, top album sellers, headlining, and award winning people so i think the people have spoken and have made it loud and clear that their here and their here to stay….”news flash”… times change and times evolve…like it or not country is evolving and for me im sooooooooo happy it is because i like pop/country this is the reason i have become a fan of this genre if it was traditional i would not give it the time or day… im a 26 yrs old female im not 80yrs old, i like it how it is now… i relate to this generation of country stars and i think their awesome thank God for Shania she was one of the ones who helped the “carrie’s and taylor’s” of today…i can careles about country traditonal its depressing…im so tired of hearing the same ol song “carrie is pop she’s vanilla blah blah blah”…go play that violin somewhere else!…because times are evolving deal with it…

FYI- THOMAS NOT ALL CARRIE FANS HATE TAYLOR OR COMPARE HER TO CARRIE….carrie has been pop/country and she always puts out a song more poppish then country this is her “before her cheats” type of song, ‘before he cheats” got played on pop radio stations and was accepted in the pop world so i dont know why people like yourself are saying that carrie is pop now like taylor… they both sing the same genre, their both pop/country artists they fall in the same category of music..”h-e-l-l-o”.. so is kellie, julianne, gloriana etc….i really dont get you at all. reba, martina, faith, and anyone from 10-15 years ago arent so popular anymore because theirs new artists breaking thru music all the time…in 10-15years carrie and taylor will also do the same but right now they are establishing themselves its their turn to make their mark…martina, shania, faith, reba, etc…they are established artists they are iconic artists thats why they are so respected and…but its not their time to shine they had their moments back then its time for new stars to shine thats the way it is…reba, martina etc cant be popular forever!…they are awesome and amazing and they dont need to be popular anymore because they have made their mark in country music!!

I’m not implying it kayko. I’m stating it plainly. Maybe I’m wrong. Like I said, I have no facts to back it up. It’s my opinion based on her fan base and those at her concerts and autograph siginings. I didn’t say I don’t believe she has any adult fans, or that she has any country fans. I’m saying that I believe her primary fans, the one’s that are racking up the real sales (this is based on how the sound scan numbers come in on record sales) are kids that don’t listen to country radio regularly.

Look at the fans in the Carrie Underwood line for autographs at CMA Music fest and those seeing her at the Grand Ole Opry and you’ll actually noticeably see adults. In Taylors fan lines the only adults you notice are little girls mothers standing with them in line. Again, it’s my opinion based on what I see. That doesn’t mean my opinion is an absolute fact, but I do have good evidence to have and maintain that opinion.

I still believe that the other artists in the I-pods of the majority of the people who have bought Taylor’s albums is not Sugarland, Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker or other pop country artist. I’m putting a bet on the table that the “majority” of those fans have “Miley”, “The Jonas Brothers” and whoever else is playing on pop radio or radio Disney these days. Again, I’m not saying she doesn’t have a good number of adult country fans, but I don’t believe that is the majority of her fan base that has fueled her success. I think even Taylor would tell you that.

Again, I like the girl as a person, but not the girls music or voice. Still I think the girl has a legitimate claim to her success. What more can you ask for from someone who is not a musical fan of your favorite (or one of) arftists?

dalylah - None the less dalylah, people should be able to say “I don’t like her music” without people freaking out. Not everyone is going to like your favorite artist.

By the way, these folks you are accusing of liking “old time music” aren’t talking about “old time music”. There is current Americana, Blue Grass and classic country. George Strait is classic country yet still very current. So, to RedMaz’s (and the likes) defense, they are listening to current music. You don’t have to like it or listen to it, but they too deserve the respect of their favorite (or one of) kind of music being incorrectly stereotyped. They aren’t listening to “You are My Sunshine” anymore (although I do love that song).

  • Redmaz says:

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 12:24 pm

..What I stated in writing is the definition of Pop Music based on my research. Now you say there is not one single human being on the planet that thinks CU sings Americana. For that statement to be even remotely correct, every single human being would first have to know what Americana music is wouldn’t they? Here’s another point where you’re starting to fall all over yourself. You said the 100 pop fans are country fans? Pop fans listen to more than just Pop Country, just as Americana fans listen to more than just Roots Country. For anyone to say they think she sings COUNTRY, and then does not feel the need to define it any further than that is direspecting country music(especially Roots Country). Is it she sings Country compared to Taylor Swift or Miss Leslie? Reba McEntire or Leighan Cortes? Big difference in “Country” wouldn’t you say? Here’s another point of interest…you said Swift’s first CD was Country. Would that be Pop Country or Roots Counrty? See how ridiculous your statements are? Swift’s music is all Pop, that’s a fact. Whether you think one is more “country” than the other is your opinion. I also disagree with your last statement about just because someone isn’t talking about Americana constantly or using all the languague you want, doesn’t mean they don’t know any other type of music. I totally disagree with that. People who know the difference and are educated use the terms Pop and Roots to describe the music they are talking about and to make a point.
You say you listen to ‘contemporary country radio” would that be contemporary POP country radio or contemporary ROOTS country radio? Pop doesn’t have the market on contemporary music. Roots has contemporary music too. Be more specific to elude any confusion. In other words…respect.

Back to my original post which you seem to disagree with, just so I get this right. You believe Underwood and this song is not overproduced and overplayed for profit? You believe Underwood and this song is not attempting to resonate with a large segment of it’s target demographics? If you disagree with my original statement, then you yourself seem to be claiming this is Americana music, and that is the ultmate insult and disrespect. Like who and what you want, but do me a favor and at least know what it is. that’s not much to ask. A little education goes a long way.

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 12:28 pm

I agree with the your last comment kayko. It is true that not only kids listen to her, although that is her main audience(nothing wrong with that). People of ALL ages respect her. That is a fact also. I wish Carrie and Taylor fans would get along. Like you briefly mentioned they have both faced the same adversity(spelling?).
Some Taylor fans nowadays are like Carrie fans back when her album first came out. They have the mentality to be a Taylor fan the have to only be a Taylor fan.(not pointed towards Kayko.
Robin I respect what you posted. You were not only defending Carrie but country music of today in general.

Now for my own views on the artist mentioned as well as the single. I do not get where people get the idea that her lyrics are immature. She has very mature songs like mentioned(Just a Dream, Wasted, Jesus Take The Wheel). How are those songs immature?

She also has amazing vocal control and a really good range. She can hit a variety of notes with different inflections. She is not the only artist that can do it but come on. She has a good voice. People may not PREFER her voice, but she has a good voice. People who denie that are the same as type of people as the extreme Carrie fans.
There is no denying this is her most “popular leaning” single to date besides So Small and Don’t Forget to Remember Me, but the lyrics are country(and i do not mean b/c the word cowboy is in it). I also like how while the song is supposed to garner of the same response of BHC(no duh), the lyrics are different. This is also her most mature co-write to date. (I thought So Small was kinda cheesy).

Last note, I do wish artist like Trisha, Miranda and Reba would score number 1’s also(Surprisingly i am not a fan of Martina’s newesst album). They all deserve it.

Just one more question to the person who said that their favorite Carrie single was the least popular. Do you mean Dont Forget To Remember Me? that was my favorite

Robin, I remember a few years ago the same arguements being used about Carrie. Only young fans, a flash in the pan, robotic, manufactured, ect. I remember wondering why people were so hard on her, I mean she was selling albums like crazy winning awards, seemed to be working her rear-end off. I felt bad for her and her fans because of the negativity. I think what is suprising me is after all the stuff that was being thrown at Carrie and her fans, is that now Carrie fans are doing it to someone else. It makes no sense to me.

Wow, Will, don’t you think that was over the top? Maybe RedMaz just needs a little education on the difference between “opinion” and “fact”. Opinions, wrapped in “know it all” attitudes show themselves for what they are.

I actually like to discuss this (or whatever this is) with RedMaz even though he too is over the top. He allows me to make so many points by “knowing” everything.

  • Robin says:

    Posted: September 4th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

kayko - Even a few years ago, Carrie never had the fanatic kids in line that Taylor has. Yes, the other arguements were made, but I’m not noting anything about Taylor being a “a flash in the pan”. She may or may not be around for a long while. I would think she probably will be because fans stick with you for a while. Will she be able to transition to an “adult” artist? I think she has the “potentional” to. She has the business sense and the smarts. Now I need to see the adult music.

Never did I say that Taylor was robotic or manufactured although it was used against Carrie. If someone thought Carrie was robotic then she was to them. I can’t argue someone’s opinion.

I think I’m pretty easy on Taylor since I just state my opinion about her music. I don’t attack her personally or wish her success would go away. I simply don’t think the girl can sing or write music well. You do. And, many others do as well. Taylor has lot’s of fan voted awards and now needs to try to impress her peers. Will she ever win me over? Maybe, but it will be when she’s writing music that’s not about boys and improves the vocals. I liked “Tim McGraw” alot. I also liked “Our Song” and “Teardrops on My Guitar”. But, everything else other than “Fifteen” is a re-do of the other themes.

You say, well Ann is saying the same thing about Carrie. And, I say, Ann is entitled to her opinion. But, I’m here backing my opinion up with examples of why I have my opinion. Those examples don’t make my opinion “Fact”, but it does mean it’s not an irrational opinion with no basis in reality and thus the opinion can be discussed rationally.

RedMaz - If your research found that the definition of “pop music” is ““assembly line music for individuals musically limited in knowledge”.” then you are researching in the “opinion” bowl of the Americana blood bank.

Yeap, as over the top statement as it may be, I say “no one in the whole wide world” believes Carrie Underwood sings Americana. No everyone in the “whole wide world” would have to know what Americana is to believe she DOES sing it. If they don’t know what it is, they wouldn’t think about it at all to think anyone sings it.

I said those 100 Carrie Underwood/pop fans are country fans. No, if a person decides to call me Robin instead of my full name, then they are not disrespecting everyone else named Robin that has a different last name. Robin is who I am. It doesn’t mean that someone else, very different than me, isn’t Robin also. Who cares if the country she sings is the same country as anyone else you are comparing her too. Let’s just look at contemporary pop country radio. She certainly doesn’t sing the same kind of country music George Strait sings. So, do I need to waddle down in the weight of “exactly” defining every aspect of the kind of “country” she does? I say no and I’m sticking to that. I don’t need to write a definition book every time I have a conversation about country music.

People who know the difference between different sub genre’s of country or any other sub genre of a different genre of music, may statement something, but they don’t dwell on definitions. To have a discussion about the differences is great, fine, good, wonderful. But, to preface every single conversation about country music with that same rhetoric is unnecessary and clouds the conversation. Some things (like music) in life don’t have to be hard.

No, I don’t think this song is overproduced (perhaps slightly over sang - I haven’t made up my mind about that yet). And, it’s clearly not overplayed since it was just released and not by choice. I think that Underwood is trying to create music that she and her fans will both enjoy. And, I don’t happen to believe that Americana is as pure as you like to believe. I think some of the artists are in that sub-genre because they choose to be and that’s where their music calls them. I believe many others are there because they couldn’t hit it big in Nashville and found a place so they can cry about the one’s who did and still make a little cash not really working.

I at least believe that Taylor Swift takes vocal lessons. I think she is trying to improve her vocal quality. While I don’t think she is there yet, I do think she is trying. Sunny Sweeney on the other hand, I don’t think she gives a rip that she can’t sing. I think she found a place where people don’t care and she claim to be and “artist” without bothering to put in the work on her voice.

“Hello Hello” I think you were referring to me in my comment that my favorite Carrie single is the least popular. My favorite single is actually “Wasted”. I thought that it was a fantastic song and is the best Carrie has released to date. It was instantly my favorite song on the Some Heart cd when I first got it, and I was so glad that it was a single. Even though it went to #1, it seemed like this song wasn’t talked about as much as the others. I think the Before He Cheats phenomenon kinda overshadowed Wasted, though it was still very successful on the charts.

That’s like saying a McDonalds hamburger is the same as a Ruth’s Cris porterhouse steak because thay both came from a cow. Moooove it on over. You’re living in denial. Facts are facts. Pop music whether it be Rock, Country, Rap, Hip Hop, R&B or Country is music that ia intended for mass appeal, and I have yet to come across many Pop music fans who know much about Americana music, However, every Americana fan I talk to knows about Pop Music. Americana music whether it be Country, Rock, Blues, Bluegrass, or Folk is Roots music based on the traditions of each specific genre, and that Americana music not only recognizes the new Roots artists it also recognizes the esstablished artists and legends. Now suppose you give me some redeeming qualities of the Pop Music industry that draw you to it. As far as Underwood and Strait, I believe both chose to be Pop acts, unless someone is controlling their career. could that be a possibility? Being recognized in approxamately 10% of today’s overall music scene like Underwood and Strait really isn’t that impressive.

Redmaz: “btw, Tim McGraw anf TONG were written by Liz Rose.” Actually they were “co-written” by Liz Rose. Taylor gets her credits for these writes for these as well.

“That’s like saying a McDonalds hamburger is the same as a Ruth’s Cris porterhouse steak because thay both came from a cow.” Then in my opinion, Carrie, Reba, LeAnn (vocally - can’t stand her personally), Martina are the steak and your girl Sunny is a really bad burger.

“Facts are facts. Pop music whether it be Rock, Country, Rap, Hip Hop, R&B or Country is music that ia intended for mass appeal,” So, you say. Perhaps in part, but I say that most of these artist just like the same kind of music as their fans do. Thus they create music that appeals to them.

“and I have yet to come across many Pop music fans who know much about Americana music, However, every Americana fan I talk to knows about Pop Music.” Perhaps because they are angry people that need to justify their musical tastes and try to believe that everyone else must be crazy or uneducated.

“Americana music whether it be Country, Rock, Blues, Bluegrass, or Folk is Roots music based on the traditions of each specific genre, and that Americana music not only recognizes the new Roots artists it also recognizes the esstablished artists and legends.” Great, fantastic, wonderful. I listen to it because I like it, just not as much as popular contemporary country. Popular country recognizes established artists as well. In straight pop/pop rock whatever you want to call it, Reba would never have a chance to “come back” with the vengence she has. Do, they recognize it enough on award shows. No. But, they do need to get Taylor Swift on screen three times and Chesney on a few times.

“Now suppose you give me some redeeming qualities of the Pop Music industry that draw you to it. As far as Underwood and Strait, I believe both chose to be Pop acts, unless someone is controlling their career. could that be a possibility? Being recognized in approxamately 10% of today’s overall music scene like Underwood and Strait really isn’t that impressive.” The redeemiing qualities for me is that I like it. I like the songs, the musicality, the lyrics. I like the artists. I like the community. They do allow artists such as George Strait, Alan Jackson, Reba, Brooks & Dunn who have been in the business forever to be on the radio along side of Chesney, Underwood, Swift, Sugarland, Paisley, etc. That 10% of “today’s overall music” scene clearly has a much bigger audience than 10%.

okay seriously some of you who dont like Carrie or this song, dont come on here at this blog & write something bad about Carrie or this song. Leave a blank & dont write anymore!!! I mean seriously, I’ll come up to you & slap ya in the face because to be honest, Carrie is who Carrie is & she is a country female singer there is! Put this in your mind, she is the Entertainer of the Year! So maybe you need to get it over ya’ll self! Just because she’s popular on Cmt or anywhere else but she isn’t the ONLY one popular. This blog is only for those who write good things about Carrie or like her song(s). Carrie is like a gift from heaven to her fans. She makes them a better person, brings them special friends together from her fan club, & her songs means alot to them. Her songs are about emotions & peoples lives. Taylor only writes songs about break up & boys, that’s all!!Just mind your own opinions to yourself & never write on here & say bad things!

    ANYWAY……………….

This song is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G & yet another #1 hit on Cmt & everywhere else :) Hopefully the new video will beat Taylor’s top 20 countdown record ;)Fingers Cross!! Can’t wait for Carrie to come back & hear all her new songs in her new album! Love you Carrie & proud to be your biggest fan! WHOOHOOOOOOOOOO

Traditional country, pop country…whatever! Carrie’s songs make me HAPPY and I do need happy. So, I’m one of those, you know, masses, who are intellectually challenged, naive, and DARE to move on in my musical taste and get criticised. Hahaha. My happydometer’s just gone up. Gonna listen to Cowboy Cassanova yet again. Whew, it truly is like a drug and I’m ADDicted!!!!

    Allison,
Another spot on review! Carrie Underwood is not only the top vocalist in country music, but she is in any genre! Cowboy Casanova is a song that will get to #1 fast. Carrie’s vocal range and strength is unsurpassed in music today!
    What a song!

I personally could care less what genre a singer is…if I like the song…I listen to it. I LOVE Cowboy Casanova! I think it is awesome and I can’t quit listening to it. I will be one of the first in line November 3rd to buy Play On! Great job, Carrie and her co-writers. I wanted so much to hear this type of sassy song from her after the release of JAD and ITYS…which were great! This girl can sing a song!

I will however agree with you Carrie fans that I don’t care what genre an artist is. If it’s good music, I will listen to it.

I agree with Steve. I love Carrie’s voice, she has great range and a big voice but, I truly have only liked one of her songs until Now. LOVE! LOVE! her newest “Cowboy Casanova”.
Finally, I been waiting for a song like this, great going.

This song is great, and Carrie has great vocals, and I listen to what I like, not who people think I should listen to, so opinions mean nothing to me, I am old enough to choose who I listen to and that is Carrie, by the way, I am happy for Taylor too-they both are great assets to country music when music sales are forever going down.

My Mom has a masters in music and a minor in journalism and she went back and listened to Carrie’s live concert performances and to some of her singles. She said that Carrie has perfect pitch singing alive and on records and that she is one of the fortunate ones that does have this. She also said to ignore the negative comments and that I should thank those that post them because it keeps Carrie’s name out there and just makes her more popular. I happen to love Carrie and think she is the best female artist out there - and I love Cowboy Casanova.

The more haters Carrie gets, the more Success she’s hiking especially with this new single, new album. She doesn’t have any problem with this. All she could do right now is work hard so that this new album will be a hit, a bang, a pow wow! All fingers crossing…let the wheel takes its ride.

To diane and pappy, you both ask “who cares?”.. That’s a great question! I hope you come back to this blog soon so we can discuss exactly who cares, and who doesn’t care. I’m looking forward to it. To Lani,, Steve and Susan, from my personal expeience the people who don’t care what genre a person sings or is recognized in are the people who listen to the least variety of music. I found that these people have maybe 5 presets of their local stations on their radio,, and change between these 5 until they find something they like. So basically flipping from one Pop station to another. Personally, I check out many genres of music, and I have come to the conclusion I don’t like certain types of music. There are a few genres of music I don’t like, so why would I sit through listening to these genres I know I don’t like in hopes of finding something from a singer I like? To me that makes absolutely no sense. For me basic music fundamentals, and genre description come long before which artists I personally like or dislike. I choose to have a genre reference point. Genres are essential. Once again why listen to a bunch of music you already know you don’t like based on genre description? So this goes back to my original point. People who don’t care what genre a singer is in don’t listen to much of a variety of music.

Try this scenario…lets say a person comes up to you, friend or stranger, and asks you if you like music, and would you like to listen to some new music? My first response would be “What kind of Music?” So my question is, to all the people who don’t care what kind, or genre of music a person sings, what would be your response?

I may be “uneducated” in music. I could care less what genre a piece of music is in. I started listening to country again because of Carrie. There is a lot of country music that I don’t like, but I listen to the stations a lot more now.

I think a lot of us listen to certain artists because we like them/the quality of their voice. Carrie snagged me as a fan while on idol, and I admit that I love all her music just because SHE sings it. I like to see her do a variety of things, which she has done since the beginning. Once again, I could care less what genre it is in. Carrie is a member of the Opry and shows great respect to the history of country music. Whether her music fits the standards of what country music “should be” doesn’t matter. She categorizes herself as country, but she seems to be more concerned with growing as an individual artist–therefore she takes the risk of not confining herself to a “pure” country sound. I love that! If all country music were the SAME, we would all be bored, wouldn’t we?

Carrie is a performer, not an artist, musician, or songwriter. She simply sings. To actually be an artist, musician, or songwriter takes some brains, and we all know Carrie isn’t exactly the sharpest tool in the shed.

Jim…totally disrespectful not only towards Carrie but also her fans.

Brad…How do you know whether or not Carrie is dumb. I mean she was about to graduate from college if American Idol did not work out for her. I do not know her personally either so I can not pass judgement either, but your response just made you look like a teenager.

One of biggest problems that people thought Carrie may face was when being defined as a “country” singer you are limited to the type of music you do. I think that is why she released this pop leaning single to show variety. I appreciate. It is not my favorite song but I know she will have more country slanted songs for my taste.

Someone said that Carrie was not smart–she was salutitorian her senior year-and after winning AI went back to college and graduated magna cum laude (this means she is VERY smart and in an elite group). She also plays piano and guitar and she co-writes her songs. I think she is using her smarts to produce great albums and #1 songs (along with her record co). I am going to college and hope I will graduate with honors also. She is an amazing entertainer and I play her songs all the time–my friends do also.–We will be buying multiple albums when it comes out in November. LONG LIVE CARRIE AND GETTING MORE GOOD MUSIC!!!!!!!

  • Robin says:

    Posted: September 8th, 2009 at 7:36 am

Brad - she is smarter than someone that bashes her on a blog. She makes millions a year (pretty smart move). She graduated second in her class in high school and as a manga cum laude graduate in college. She didn’t “have” to graduate from college at all since she already had a record deal prior to her final semester in college. She went back and finished it because she respected the work she’d put in for 3 and a half years and the money her parents had invested. She respects education as her mother and sisters are all teachers. She just donated over $102,000 in musical instruments to her hometown public schools. So not only does she have an education, she uses her education and supports educational causes.

You should know what you’re talking about before you speak. Because she is probably one of the most educated performers in Nashville. She manages her money, her career and her life well so she is putting that education to good use.

RedMaz - we are back to the fact you aren’t musical genious you think you are and everyone else isn’t as musically inept as you think they are.

Hi Robin,,,, thanks but you’re right I’m far fron being a genius. I believe music is a continuous learning experience. Music is infinate, as is a thirst for knowledge. I was asking diane, pappy Lani Steve and susan some questions about how they go about checking out new artists when they are not really interested in genres or genre description. I haven’t heard back from them yet, but feel free to join in the conversation. How do you go about checking out new artists and their music? Did you see that the Boxmasters bumped “Electric Dirt” out of #1 on the AMA CHART?

Did you see where cmt violated their Email will not be published statement? They were publishing some last night here. I received 3 posters email addresses here last night..

    Posted: September 9th, 2009 at 7:40 am

RedMaz - I don’t follow charts other than popular contemporary country. I go about checking out new music from other genres one of four ways, I search them out on the internet (including but not limited to the back alley’s of I-tunes), I listen to satelite radio, I go to individually owned (not chain stores) music stores and while checking out old stuff I’ve never heard, I pick around the new stuff that would never make it to a chain store, and I go to local events (including clubs) to see little known local acts that don’t sing the norm. When traveling I do the same as far as checking out that areas local talent. I might check a chart or two once in a while and look for someone I’ve never heard of from that chart, but I don’t follow other charts on a regular basis. The truth is I like all types of music and I search out things that aren’t on radio, but I like what’s on radio and that’s where I spend most of my time in the car commuting to work.

I’m not sure what you are talking about the e-mail addresses, but hopefully that is not the case.

Carrie Underwood annoys me. Her voice is weird, and it is similar to the song “Bang” from new singer Brittany McDonald. I’m not saying this new chick will be the next country star (she won’t), but come on…stealing from an unestablished singer? What if someone had done that to Carrie?
